The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest research university, sitting in central Auckland and ranked #67 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Founded in 1883, the university enrolls students from more than 100 countries across eight faculties spanning arts, business, engineering, sciences, law, education, medical and health, and creative arts.

The Auckland University campus network delivers over 130 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate programmes, all taught in English, with two main intakes in February and July that align cleanly with Indian academic exit timelines. For Indian students, Auckland pairs recognised graduate outcomes with a comparatively short 15 to 18 month masters structure, and every graduate degree confers eligibility for the New Zealand post-study work visa, a 3-year open work permit issued after a masters or doctoral qualification.

  • QS World Rank 2027: #67 globally, #1 in New Zealand
  • Acceptance rate: 45% (estimated)
  • Intakes: Semester 1 (February start) and Semester 2 (July start)
  • Postgraduate tuition band: NZD 50,534 to 58,258 per year (INR 28.8 lakh to 33.2 lakh)
  • Average postgraduate starting salary: NZD 60,000 to 70,000 (INR 34.2 lakh to 39.9 lakh) as per Auckland Graduate Destination Survey

Total tuition for the two-year Business and Economics masters band works out to roughly NZD 101,000 to 106,000 (INR 57.6 lakh to 60.4 lakh), with the university’s India High Achievers Scholarship trimming up to NZD 20,000 (INR 11.4 lakh) off the sticker for admitted Indian students. Living costs in Auckland run NZD 20,000 to 25,000 per year (INR 11.4 lakh to 14.3 lakh) per Immigration New Zealand’s student visa minimums, and the postgraduate visa route allows an open 3-year work permit that qualifies applicants for the Skilled Migrant Category. Admission Status: Open (Semester 1 2027 intake). Most international postgraduate applications for the Semester 1 2027 (February start) intake close on 8 December 2026, while competitive programmes such as Doctor of Clinical Psychology, Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology and Master of Science (Forensic Science) close 1 November 2026 and Master of Nursing Science and Doctor of Health Sciences close 1 October 2026. The next cycle, for Semester 2 2027 (July start) entry, has published deadlines of 8 June 2027 for most masters and bachelors programmes and 4 July 2027 for the remainder, with Master of Energy closing 3 April 2027 and Master of Creative Writing closing 8 April 2027.

The University of Auckland Popular Courses and Fees 2027

Auckland University fees for international students are set annually per faculty, not per programme, so masters totals scale with points enrolled and programme length. Standard full-time load is 120 points per year; most coursework masters run 180 points (roughly 15 to 18 months) and undergraduate bachelors run 3 to 4 years. All fees below reflect 2027 international rates published by the university and exclude the compulsory Student Services Fee of NZD 1,132.80 per year.

The University of Auckland Admission 2027

The University of Auckland admission runs on a two-intake calendar with Semester 1 opening in February 2027 and Semester 2 opening in July 2027. Indian applicants primarily target the February intake because it aligns with the Indian academic calendar and gives visa timelines a full 6 to 8 week buffer.

[Source: The University of Auckland official application closing dates page]

The University of Auckland recommends Indian applicants submit at least 4 weeks before the official deadline so that credential verification, offer issuance and student visa processing at the Mumbai and New Delhi visa centres complete before programme start. Applicants planning to co-apply for the MBA in New Zealand at multiple universities should sync deadlines to avoid duplicate fee payments.

Planning note: Indian bachelor’s transcripts often take 3 to 5 weeks for WES or ECE evaluation. Start credential verification the moment Semester 6 marks are declared so the report is ready when the online application opens on 1 August each year.

The University of Auckland Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Auckland University sets differentiated cut-offs by faculty, and Indian applicants are assessed against clearly stated academic and English proficiency thresholds.

Postgraduate requirements:

  • Academic: Bachelor’s with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 for most coursework masters; research masters and MBA prefer 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended)
  • English proficiency: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0; TOEFL iBT overall 90 with writing 21; PTE Academic overall 58 with no communicative skill below 50; C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (Cambridge) overall 176 with no band below 169; LanguageCert Academic overall 70 with no skill below 65
  • Credential verification: WES, ECE or NZQA assessment recommended for 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees; original transcripts uploaded to Student Services Online
  • Standout requirement: MBA requires 3 years of full-time managerial or professional work experience; GRE or GMAT waived for most masters unless the applicant’s transcript is quantitative-light

Undergraduate requirements:

  • Academic: Class 12 with 75% aggregate from CBSE, ISC, IB or a recognised state board; engineering requires 85% including Physics, Chemistry, Maths
  • English proficiency: IELTS Academic overall 6.0 with no band below 5.5; TOEFL iBT overall 80 with writing 21

Key insight: The University of Auckland waives the English test for Indian applicants whose last three years of study were entirely in English medium, subject to a medium-of-instruction letter uploaded at application. This waiver is treated conservatively for regional-medium boards and is safest to secure by submitting an IELTS backup within 2 years of application.

The University of Auckland Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of Auckland acceptance rate sits at 45% (estimated) overall for international applicants, placing it in the moderately selective tier for a QS top-100 research university. Auckland does not publish an official annual acceptance figure; the number is derived from third-party aggregation across recent admission cycles and should be treated as an indicative planning benchmark rather than a guaranteed cut-off.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202545% (estimated)Stable
202445% to 50% (estimated)Slight tightening
202350% (estimated)Baseline

Program-level selectivity varies sharply. Medicine, Clinical Psychology and Health Science below-doctoral admits often dip below 20%, while Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and most coursework masters in Arts and Sciences run 55% or higher. MBA and Master of Data Science sit closer to the 40% band because of application volume from India and Southeast Asia.

Reality check: A 45% headline rate does not mean 45% of Indian applicants convert. Indian offer rates cluster higher for CBSE and ISC applicants with strong quantitative marks and lower for applicants shorter on English proof, so an early IELTS 7.0 plus 65%+ bachelor’s aggregate materially improves conversion odds.

  • Median starting salary: NZD 60,000 to 70,000 (INR 34.2 lakh to 39.9 lakh) for masters graduates; NZD 50,000 to 60,000 (INR 28.5 lakh to 34.2 lakh) for bachelors graduates (market median)

The University of Auckland vs Peer Universities

Peer benchmarking places The University of Auckland against two same-country research universities and two Australian Group of Eight universities (a coalition of Australia’s leading research-intensive universities) that Indian applicants commonly cross-shortlist.

The University of Auckland stands out on price-to-rank efficiency: it is the only university in Oceania inside the QS top 100 that pairs a 3-year post-study work visa with a masters fee band at or below the Australian equivalent. For students weighing budget, the The University of Auckland profile on Collegedunia lists live tuition, hostel and scholarship data.

The University of Auckland fits Indian students who target a QS top-100 masters, a 15 to 18 month structure, and a guaranteed 3-year open post-study visa. A total investment of INR 40 lakh to 47 lakh per year translates into a median starting salary of INR 34 lakh to 40 lakh, delivering a payback window inside 3 years for most Business and STEM graduates who convert on the Skilled Migrant Category residency track.

Applicants seeking a QS top-25 brand, US-style two-year masters or heavy US recruiter access should consider University of Melbourne in Australia instead, where fees and living costs run 25% higher but global brand pull is greater. Indian applicants aiming below INR 20 lakh per year should benchmark Victoria University of Wellington or University of Otago rather than Auckland.

  • 4-5 Everything is available on campus: library, sports centre, medical, eSports, accommodations. O-Week, Ausa Club, Indian societies, sports Matches and Toga Party sports are different clubs that are there. The gym is easily available and promoted via cheap memberships for enrolled students; various events and career summits also take place very frequently.

Overview

I chose this college as it was the best university among my applications with a high world ranking. It was also the best university in New Zealand. New Zealand also suited my personal and geographical preferences. Education quality and content is top notch. Tutors are approachable and supportive. Infrastructure is good and helpful. Wi-Fi had occasional issues. I strongly recommend having a decent mobile data plan for urgent use cases. Being a masters degree, the content is indeed difficult and hard to score in, but what you learn is equally rewarding. Sports facilities are very limited. The student halls are always overbooked so there is less assistance from the university in finding accommodation. You're quite by yourself in that aspect. Some courses' weighting could be better. The distribution between the coursework and exam was unfair in a few courses.

Clubs and events were not as good as I expected. Although I don't go out as often to such events, the few times that I did look for them they were quite tough to find. Student clubs were mostly irrelevant and barely hosted any events. The community was also not really sociable in my year, particularly due to the high number of students not being a native English speaker. Facilities however were good. Libraries and spaces were large and clean. WiFi occasionally had some trouble. Sports facilities were quite rare and were in a different location than the main city campus. However, they are currently constructing a sports facility inside the main campus which should be finished soon.

My experience at the University so far has been excellent. I have been involved in both teaching activities and research, both of which have been a rewarding experience for me.

There are several clubs at the university. There are ample opportunities for a vast range of extracurricular activities, from sports to coding. Each campus has a separate library. The entire UoA campus has a centralized wifi facility.

I am an offshore students so can't exactly give any opinion on this. Although there are so many clubs one can participate in. I do voluntary work like helping other student to gather information as a class representative and student ambassador.

Overview

I applied to the University of Auckland since it is the leading University in New Zealand, and being a part of such a massive institution would have been an excellent opportunity for me. The admission process is pretty fast and convenient; considering me being an international student, all my queries regarding admission were cleared through email within 48 hours. The admission process isn't much of a hassle. You fill out the online form from the website, and that's it. A few weeks later, I received an email saying I got the Conditional Offer. After receiving that, you just have to complete the conditions they have put forward, and if you manage to meet those, you will get your part. You just need to make sure that all the conditions that the University has put forward are satisfied. Mine was to get an 85% score or above in Physics, Chemistry, and Maths in the 12th Examination and receive a band of 6 or above in IELTS.

The campus facilities are actually the best. The sports and recreation centre, the library and the lecture halls are at the top of my list. The infrastructure is modern, and a few buildings are constructed just a month back for students to have the best experience. There are over two hundred clubs that organize events almost every week. There are inter-faculty sports events and balls that are the highlight of the year. The campus has a diverse variety of students. You can find people of all cultures. International students are usually in majority from India, China, Vietnam and Phillipines.

Overview

I was fooled by my consultant that it is the best university. I could have prepared for GRE and opted for the USA. Also, my consultant said this is the only country to get 3 years f work visa once I get graduated but getting a job without formal and professional work experience is tough in the country. also, the support for career development is poor.

Morning 6 am to 12 pm computer lab will be available with kitchen and bathrooms. Each student can copy a computer space for his/her research and submit the assignments. Will have many events, carrer events intercarions with entreperenuers with senior students, past studnets.

Due to current situation of COVID-19 lockdown, I have not been to the campus. However, based on information I have, campus infrastructure is really fantastic, it provides highly competitive research infrastructure. There are a lot of events and societies/clubs in which students can take part and mingle with other people from different culture.

Overview

The main reason I chose University of Auckland is because of an alignment of research interests and reputation of my doctoral supervisor. In addition, Auckland has a very good economics program and is ranked in the top 100 globally.

Given the border restriction still in place in New Zealand, I am an offshore student (meaning I am pursuing my PhD remotely until the borders open up). As a result, my experience with the library, clubs etc. is severely limited. However, in terms of the online facilities such as availability of software, online library etc., Auckland is very good.

To be a nurse, you need a minimum overall score of 7.0 and 7.5 for listening, 6.5 for writing, and 7.0 for speaking. However, it's best to confirm directly with the admissions office of the university you're interested in for specific requirements.
