The University of Auckland (UoA) is New Zealand's #1 ranked university, sitting at #65 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026. For Indian students eyeing a world-class degree without the price tag of the US or UK, Auckland is a serious option worth understanding in full.

Annual tuition fees at UoA for international students range from NZ$40,225 (~₹22.70 Lakhs) to NZ$86,561 (~₹48.84 Lakhs) depending on the programme. Most popular courses like MS Computer Science, MIT, and MS Data Science fall in the NZ$52,000–NZ$62,000 (₹29–₹35 Lakh) range per year. Add living costs and you are looking at a total annual budget of roughly NZ$75,000–NZ$90,000 (~₹42–₹51 Lakhs).

Conversion Note: 1 NZD = ₹56.51 INR (June 2, 2026).

Note: These are annual tuition fee estimates for full-time study at 120 credit points per year. Your actual fees may vary depending on the specific subjects you enrol in each semester. A Student Services Fee of NZ$1,132.80 (~₹63,960) is charged separately on top of tuition fees for full-time students.

Note on "Points": At UoA, courses are measured in "points" rather than credits or semesters. A full-time student typically takes 120 points per year (60 per semester). Your tuition fee is calculated by multiplying the per-point fee for your subject area by the number of points you enrol in. This is different from how Indian universities calculate fees.

University of Auckland Cost of Living

Tuition is only part of the picture. Auckland is one of the more expensive cities in the Asia-Pacific region, and your living costs will add significantly to your annual budget.

Here is a breakdown of what to expect based on official UoA data:

Expense Estimated Cost (NZD) Estimated Cost (INR)
On-Campus Catered Accommodation (annual) NZ$21,395 – NZ$22,485 ~₹12.08 L – ₹12.69 L
Self-Catered / Private Accommodation (weekly) ~NZ$350 per week ~₹19,778/week
Food and Groceries (weekly) ~NZ$69 per week ~₹3,899/week
Entertainment and Gym (weekly) ~NZ$70 per week ~₹3,956/week
Transport (weekly, student concession) ~NZ$21.50 per week ~₹1,215/week
Overseas Student Health Insurance (annual) Added automatically to fees account Varies by plan
Estimated Total Weekly Living Cost ~NZ$431 ~₹24,356/week

At roughly NZ$431 per week, your annual living cost works out to approximately NZ$22,400 (~₹12.65 Lakhs) for a 52-week year. On-campus catered halls include electricity, water, laundry, gym membership, and WiFi — making them a cost-effective and convenient option for first-year students.

All international students at UoA are automatically enrolled in the Studentsafe Inbound University insurance policy by Allianz Partners. The insurance charge is added directly to your tuition fees account. You do not need to arrange this separately.

Note for Indian Students: On-campus halls at UoA are often overbooked. Apply for accommodation as early as possible — ideally at the same time as your course application. Students who miss out have to find private rentals in Auckland's competitive housing market, which can cost significantly more.

How to Pay Your UoA Fees from India

International students at UoA must pay the full year's fees before the start of their first semester. This is also a requirement for your student visa application — Immigration New Zealand typically requires proof of fee payment before issuing a visa.

The key fee due dates for 2026 are:

  • Semester 1 2026: Monday, 2 March 2026
  • Semester 2 2026: Monday, 20 July 2026
  • Quarter 3 2026: Monday, 6 July 2026
  • Quarter 4 2026: Monday, 28 September 2026

If you miss the fee due date, you risk a late payment fee of NZ$120 (~₹6,781) and may lose your place in the programme.

UoA accepts international fee payments through the following methods:

  • Flywire — the recommended method for Indian students. It is a secure platform designed specifically for international student fee transfers.
  • CIBC International Student Pay — a Tier 1 global banking option for secure transfers.
  • Credit or Debit Card — for students already in New Zealand.
  • Internet Banking — for students with a New Zealand bank account.

Note for Indian Students: Flywire allows you to pay in Indian Rupees directly from your Indian bank account. It shows you the exact amount in INR before you confirm the transfer, with no hidden charges. This is the most straightforward option for families sending money from India.

  • I got my initial accommodation through an agent but that wasn't a very good place to live. Empire Apartments have very small rooms and high rent; please avoid such places. The management of my apartment was really bad and the rent was very high. There were small rooms, a small kitchen and a small toilet. I would recommend opting for university accommodation for the first quarter and then you can easily get a private place here itself through trademe.com.

Our course syllabus is highly knowledgeable. It is education that you cannot find online. We had choices among several courses and streams to fine tune our preferences and career paths. We had regular exposure to industry by hosting regular seminars. The last semester requirement of our course was an industry internship which consisted of real industry work with companies in New Zealand.

Fees

NZD $24,000 per semester. Depending on what points course you are doing. In my case I did a 180 point course which consisted of 3 semesters. Thus my total tuition fee was $72,000

My course being engineering, it definitely is not easy. The curriculum and daily schedules are hectic, but if you are consistent, you can pull it off. You get to keep 3-4 courses in one semester, so it is pretty manageable. The faculty keeps on changing after a few weeks as the topics of the course progress. Each lecturer has been assigned a few topics that they teach and once that is finished, the teachers are switched. The first year is the common year so all the students in that course study together.

Fees

I am an international student, and the fees for an international student are not affordable for everybody. For us, it was pretty expensive. The expenses of an international student are five times than that of a domestic one. The mode of fees payment is flywire which is like a third party that helps you pay the fees abroad.

My course was on international Business without any core specialization. The teachings for some modules are insightful and excellent. However, for some courses, if professors were available to teach, it would have been great. Moreover, if the professor were giving supportive and constructive feedback. It could have been satisfied. If they provided us with time to participate in activities within the university. It would have been great. if they integrated all the courses and made them relevant it would have been best. I learned the definition of International business and theories relevant to it. The professors did not teach or provide lectures. All they said is to study by yourself. Only International Human Resources Management and Managing people with the organization were excellent courses. Professional development courses are a waste of money Business Analytics is a useless course in this university.

Since I am doing a PhD, 100% of my work is within the confines of independent research along with the help of academics at the university. As a result, I do not have much to say about the course curriculum at Auckland. However, the research experience in general is very up-to-date and the expertise and openness of the academics is exceptional.

The good thing about studying a Phd in New Zealand is that the fees are the same for both local and international students. It is NZ$7,454.40 or around Rs. 3,65,000 per annum
