Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Applicant must have completed either:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Data Science from this University, with a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or higher in 75 points above Stage II. 
  • A Bachelor of Science with a double major in Computer Science and Statistics from this University, with a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or higher in 75 points above Stage II.

English language requirements are:

  • An overall score of 6.5 and no bands below 6.0 is required in IELTS (Academic).
  • An overall score of 90 and a writing score of 21 is required in Internet-based TOEFL (iBT).
  • An overall score of 68 and a writing score of 21 is required in Paper-based TOEFL.
  • A minimum grade of B- is required in the University of Auckland Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP), if students get admission through it.
  • A minimum grade of B- is required in the University of Auckland English Pathway for Postgraduate Studies (EPPS), if students get admission through it.
  • An overall score of 58 and no PTE Communicative score below 50 is required in the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic. 

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed both a bachelor’s (3 years) degree.
  • Or, completed a bachelor’s degree requiring 4-years of study (e.g., B.Pharm., M.B.B.S., B.Tech., B.Eng., or B.Arch).

Submission of IELTS scores is compulsory for this program, however, students may submit a PTE score too instead of that.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

By completing a strong core of Computer Science and Statistics courses, you will gain a unique combination of skills in Data Science and be able to comprehend, process and manage data effectively to extract value from it. The MBusDataSc primary focus is to equip you to become a practitioner, allowing you to meet the needs of industry, and solve the data problems of the world. However, there will also be an alternative path that will focus on preparing students for research in the area (e.g. going on to do a masters by research or PhD).

The proposed degree is inherently multidisciplinary, featuring Information Science and Marketing, which gives the degree a strong business focus; as well as contributions from Computer Science and from Statistics.

Once you have completed the MBusDataSc you will have developed an advanced knowledge of data science. You will understand how data analysis can be used in business, including being able to identify opportunities to use data, be aware of ethical and privacy issues and possible mitigations, and be able to select appropriate means of presenting the results of analysis. You will be able to select and apply techniques to manage and analyse large collections of data.


Data is “the new oil” of the 21st century. Big data and data science are revolutionising many fields—from science and engineering to economics, the tech sector, and digital humanities.

This Master of Data Science places you at the forefront of this new field.

This program gives you the knowledge and skills to discover patterns and generate insights from complex datasets.
