All the applications are assessed by a Selection Committee, which comprises the Dean, Deputy Dean, and an academic of the Faculty of Engineering. They finally make a recommendation to the University Council regarding the selection.

The Colombo Plan Scholarship was instituted in 2011 by alumni of the Faculty of Engineering. It seeks to aid international students pursuing a degree in engineering at the University of Auckland.
Meritorious undergraduate or graduate students in engineering are eligible, if meeting other criteria, to be granted 3000 NZD for their studies. The money is split into 1500 NZD per semester, for a maximum duration of two semesters.
