Ques. I got cutoff 197 (MBC), general rank 2293; what are my chances in CEG / PSG?
Ans. With 197 marks in MBC category and with the general rank 2293, you are almost at the borderline for getting into CEG, CSE branch, but your score of 197 under MBC gives you good chances at PSG for CSE.
| Parameter | Your Value | Typical Cutoff at CEG / PSG (Govt Quota, General / OC / Top Branches) |
|---|---|---|
| Marks (out of 200) | 197 | ~ 198-200 for CEG; ~ 197.5-199.8 for PSG |
| Rank (General) | 2293 | Usually only ranks below ~2000-1500 (depending on branch & category) are safe for CEG CSE; PSG might accept slightly higher ranks depending on category & branch. |
| Category | MBC | MBC is a reserved category (though “reserved” in TN has different nuances than “OBC” elsewhere). The cutoff for reserved categories is usually lower than for open category by a couple of marks in many branches. This gives you a slight advantage relative to General cutoff marks. |
Ques. For an 185.5 cutoff (General Rank ~11991 / BC rank ~7225), do I have a chance for high demand branches (CSE / ECE / IT) in REC or similar colleges?
Ans. With the 185.5 cutoff, general rank of 11991 and BC rank of around 7225, you will not get into top branches like CSE and ECE in the elite colleges like Anna University CEG or equivalent, as they required much higher cutoff around 1200.
With this marks range you can get ECE or IT under the BC reservation.
Your Chances at REC / Similar Colleges with 185.5 TNEA Cutoff marks, Gen Rank ~11,991, BC Rank ~7,225):
- CSE in REC: With this marks range it is difficult to take admission In the REC with CSE, REC’s CSE branch for BC/OBC requires higher cutoff marks around 188-190 or more.
- ECE / IT in REC: The chances of getting admission into REC with ECE or IT branch are slightly better than CSE, especially under BC reservation.
Ques. I got 167/200 in Class XII – what colleges can I get into?
Ans. If you got the 167 marks out of 200 in your class 12 then you can get into Kumaraguru College of Technology, Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, and Vel Tech Multi Tech Dr Rangarajan Dr Sakunthala Engineering College with CSE,IT and other engineering branches.
| College | Some Branches / Notes | Past Cutoff in 160-170 Range |

TNEA Rank
The TNEA rank is a merit rank given to every candidate on the basis of marks secured in their Class 12 examination in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM). The rank is determined by normalizing the candidate's PCM marks with respect to other candidates who have applied for the same year's TNEA process.
TNEA Rank and Counseling
During the TNEA counseling procedure, candidates with ranks 1-500 may get popular departments such as CSE, EEE, and IT in leading institutions.
Candidates with ranks 500-3000 can expect branches like Mechanical and Civil Engineering in better institutions.
Candidates with ranks higher than 3000 might have to go for lesser-known departments such as Agricultural Engineering in new colleges, since popular departments would most probably get filled in earlier rounds.
| Counseling Round | Rank Range | Branches Likely to be Available | Institutions Likely to be Available |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Round Counseling | 1-500 | CSE, EEE, IT | Top institutions like Anna University, PSG Tech, MIT Chennai |
| Second and Third Round Counseling | 500-3000 | Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering | Good institutions like Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Kumaraguru College of Technology |
| Subsequent Rounds | Above 3000 | Lesser-known branches like Agricultural Engineering, Biotechnology | Lesser-known institutions or newer colleges |
TNEA Tie-Breaking Rules
If two or more candidates have the same total PCM score, the following tie-breaking rules are applied:
- Higher Marks in Mathematics: Candidates with higher marks in Mathematics will be ranked higher.
- Higher Marks in Physics: If the tie still persists, candidates with higher marks in Physics will be given preference.
- Date of Birth: If the tie remains unresolved, the candidate older in age will be given preference.
Factors Influencing TNEA Cutoff
The TNEA cutoff marks are determined by a variety of factors that influence the competition for engineering courses in Tamil Nadu.
- Number of Applicants
- Seat Availability
- Difficulty Level of HSE (Higher Secondary Exam)
- Performance of Candidates
- Reservation Policies
- Course and Branch Demand
- Government Policies and External Factors

TNEA Cutoff 2026 FAQs
Ques. What is the 12th cutoff for Anna University?
Ans. Anna University does not have a mandatory 12th percentage criteria, rather admission through TNEA is done by calculating a cut off score out of 200 using 12th class marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Cutoff Calculation Formula:
The cutoff calculation is based on the below mentioned formula:
Cutoff = (Maths Mark / 2) + (Physics Mark / 4) + (Chemistry Marks / 4)
Example:
If you scored:
- Maths = 95
- Physics = 90
- Chemistry = 85
Then the cutoff will be:
Cutoff = (95 / 2) + (90 / 4) + (85 / 4) = 47.5 + 22.5 + 21.25 = 91.25 out of 100 or 182.5 out of 200.
Expected Cutoffs for Popular Branches in Anna University Colleges (Open Category):
The below table provides the expected cutoffs marks for admission into the top branches of well-known colleges of Anna University. The cutoff is calculated out of 200 and higher cutoff means there is high competition for that particular branch and college.
For example: If you want to secure a seat at College of Engineering, Guindy’s Computer science branch, then you need to have a cutoff score of around 198-200. This means that you have to get good marks in Maths, Physics and Chemistry in your 12th board exam. Similarly for Electronics & Communication in Madras Institute of Technology, the expected score is around 197-199 which is also very competitive.
For Biotechnology in Alagappa College of Technology, the expected cutoff would be less at 195-198 as compared to above two but this is also required to score good marks in your 12th board.
| College Name | Branch | Expected Cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| College of Engineering, Guindy | Computer Science | 198 – 200 |
| Madras Institute of Technology | Electronics & Comm. | 197 – 199 |
| Alagappa College of Technology | Biotechnology | 195 – 198 |
Ques. Which college is best for 170 cut-off marks?
Ans. The below table shows some well-known engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu along with the branch they offer and the cutoff range from last year. These cut-offs help you to understand what scores you might need to get into specific courses at each college.
For example, if a student is interested in Mechanical Engineering and has a cutoff of around 170, they might get a seat in colleges like Kumaraguru College of Technology, Sri Krishna College of Engineering & Technology, or Government College of Engineering, Salem, as their cutoff ranges are between 165 and 172. Similarly, for students interested in ECE (Electronics and Communication Engineering), Velammal Engineering College and Panimalar Engineering College are good options with cut-offs around 168–173 and 165–172, respectively.
Colleges Accepting Around 170 Cutoff:
| College Name | Possible Branches | Last Year Cutoff Range |
|---|---|---|
| Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore | Civil, Mechanical, EEE | 165–172 |
| Sri Krishna College of Engg & Tech, Coimbatore | ECE, IT, Mechanical | 165–170 |
