TNEA 2026 Rank List

The TNEA 2026 rank list will be released on June 29, 2026, by DoTE in PDF format on the official website. The rank list is the basis for all counselling rounds; only candidates on the rank list are eligible to participate in choice filling and seat allotment.

How is the TNEA Rank Calculated?

TNEA does not conduct an entrance exam. Rank is determined entirely by normalised Class 12 marks in three subjects:

Subject Weightage (out of 200)
Mathematics 100 marks
Physics 50 marks
Chemistry 50 marks
Total 200 marks
  • Normalisation: Marks obtained by candidates from different boards (Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE, ICSE, etc.) are normalised to ensure fair comparison. The normalised score — not the raw Class 12 score — is used to prepare the rank list.

Tie-Breaking Rule

If two or more candidates have the same normalised score, TNEA resolves the tie in this order:

  1. Higher marks in Mathematics
  2. Higher marks in Physics
  3. Higher marks in Chemistry
  4. Random number allotted to the candidate at registration

Random numbers are issued to all registered candidates on June 5, 2026. This number is used as the final tiebreaker only when all subject marks are equal.

TNEA 2026 Counselling Process

TNEA counselling is conducted entirely online in multiple rounds. You do not need to visit any campus until you confirm your seat. Certificate verification at a Facilitation Centre (TFC) is the only offline step.

Types of Counselling

  1. General Counselling — The main counselling process, open to all eligible candidates in the rank list. Conducted in three rounds.
  2. Supplementary Counselling — Held after Round 3 for candidates who were not allotted a seat in earlier rounds, and for those who passed HSC supplementary exams.
  3. SCA to SC Counselling — A final round after all other rounds conclude, where vacant SCA (Arunthathiyar) category seats are converted and allotted to SC candidates.

TNEA 2026 Seat Matrix

The seat matrix shows the total number of seats available across all participating engineering colleges for TNEA 2026 counselling. DoTE publishes a fresh residual seat matrix PDF before each round.

Total seats have grown steadily — from 1.80 lakh in 2023 to an expected 1.87 lakh+ in 2026. Vacant seats have also declined year-on-year, indicating rising fill rates (up from 59.9% in 2022 to 80.3% in 2025).

Overall Seat Matrix (Trend)

Year Total Seats Government Quota Seats Vacant Seats
2026 (Expected) ~1.87 lakh ~1.27 lakh ~19,000
2025 ~1,85,000 ~1,25,000 ~20,000
2024 ~1,82,000 ~1,22,000 ~21,000
2023 ~1,80,000 ~1,20,000 ~22,000

Reservation Policy (Category-wise Seat Distribution)

TNEA follows the Tamil Nadu Government's reservation policy:

Category Reservation
Open Competition (OC) 31%
Backward Classes (BC) 26.5%
Most Backward Classes & DNC (MBC) 20%
Scheduled Caste (SC) 15%
Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar (SCA) 3%
Scheduled Tribe (ST) 1%
BC Muslim (BCM) 3.5%
Reservation Policy (Category-wise Seat Distribution)

Additional Horizontal Reservations:

  • 7.5% Government School Quota: Reserved for students who studied in government schools from Class 6 to 12
  • Sports Quota: Separate provision for state/national-level sports achievers
  • Ex-Servicemen Quota: For children of ex-defence personnel

Important: The "50% government quota" applies only to minority self-financing (SF) colleges. Non-minority SF colleges must surrender 65% of seats to TNEA counselling.

TNEA 2026 Cutoff

The TNEA cutoff is expressed in two formats: cutoff marks (out of 200) and cutoff rank. Official cutoffs are released at cutoff.tneaonline.org after each counselling round.

  • Cutoffs rise or fall based on competition, applicant volume, and seat matrix.
  • TNEA 2026 registered 3 lakh+ candidates — competition for CSE and AI seats at top colleges remains extremely high.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the TNEA 2026 cutoff score for CSE at top colleges?

Ans. For OC category candidates, CSE at CEG, MIT, and PSG Tech requires a cutoff of 198–200 out of 200. SSN requires 197–199. Scores below 190 make the top government college CSE seats very difficult.

Ques. How many rounds does TNEA counselling have?

Ans. TNEA 2026 will conduct 3 general counselling rounds, followed by supplementary counselling (for unallotted candidates and HSC supplementary passers) and a final SCA to SC counselling round.

Ques. Which college is best for a 140 cutoff?

Ans. St. Joseph's College of Engineering, Chennai or Agni College of Technology, Chennai, are strong and popular choices. You can also consider SRM Valliammai or Hindustan Institute for decent placements.

Ques. What is the 7.5% government school quota?

Ans. 7.5% of total engineering seats are reserved for students who studied in Tamil Nadu government schools from Classes 6 to 12. These candidates compete separately within this quota and are called for counselling before the general rounds.

Ques. What is the Random Number in TNEA, and why is it important?

Ans. The Random Number is a unique 10-digit number assigned to each candidate (announced around June 5, 2026). It is used to break ties when two candidates have the same cutoff marks. A higher random number gets preference.

Ques. Can I change my allotted seat in subsequent rounds?

Ans. Yes. By selecting "Accept and Upward," you retain your current allotment while competing for a better preference in the next round. If a better seat is found, it replaces the old one. If not, your original allotment is retained. You can never be downgraded through this option.

Ques. How is the cutoff calculated for TNEA?

Ans. The TNEA cutoff mark is calculated as: Maths marks scaled to 100 + Physics marks scaled to 50 + Chemistry marks scaled to 50 = Total out of 200. Marks from different boards are normalised to a common scale for fair comparison.

Ques. What happens if I do not report to the college after accepting a seat?

Ans. If you select "Accept and Join" but do not report to the college within the specified window, your seat is permanently forfeited. You will not be eligible for further rounds.

Ques. Do CBSE students get the same treatment as TN State Board students?

Ans. Yes. CBSE, ICSE, and all other board marks are normalised to the Tamil Nadu State Board scale before rank calculation. The normalisation process ensures fairness across all boards.

Ques. What documents are needed for certificate verification?

Ans. Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, community certificate (if applicable), transfer certificate, conduct certificate, nativity certificate, and any special quota certificates (sports, 7.5% govt school, ex-servicemen). All must be presented in original at the TFC during June 8–20, 2026.
