What is NBSE?
The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) is the apex regulatory and examination body for school education in the state of Nagaland. Established by the Government of Nagaland and headquartered in Kohima, NBSE sets the curriculum, conducts public examinations, declares results, and issues certificates to students in affiliated schools.
NBSE conducts two major public examinations every year. The High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam is for Class 10 students, and the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) exam is for Class 12 students. Both exams are held in offline (pen and paper) mode every February and March.
More than 38,000 students from government and private schools across Nagaland appear for HSLC and HSSLC combined each year. The HSLC certificate is the minimum qualification for Class 11 admission, while the HSSLC certificate opens doors to undergraduate college education and government job applications.
Apart from the main board exams, NBSE also conducts:
- Middle School Leaving Certificate (MSLC) exam for Class 8
- Class 9 and Class 11 annual promotional exams
- Compartmental and improvement exams for students who need to clear failed subjects
- Nagaland School Entrance Examination (NSEE) for Class 9 admissions in government schools

How to Prepare for NBSE Compartmental Exam 2026
With the first paper on June 9 and today being May 29, you have about 10 days to prepare. Use this time well:
- Focus on subjects you failed – do not divide time equally across all subjects
- Solve previous year NBSE question papers for each subject you are appearing in
- Study from NBSE model question papers available on the official website
- Target scoring above 33% in each paper – that is the passing mark
- For Science and Social Sciences, most NBSE questions come directly from NCERT chapters
- For Mathematics, practise sample problems chapter by chapter rather than trying to revise everything
NBSE Compartmental Result 2026
The NBSE compartmental exam result 2026 is expected in July 2026, approximately 4–6 weeks after the last exam on June 20. NBSE will publish the result on its official website. In the 2025 cycle, the compartmental result was declared within 5 weeks of the exams ending. Students who clear the compartmental exam receive a fresh marksheet and can proceed with Class 11 admissions or higher education.
NBSE Pass Percentage and Statistics
The NBSE HSLC and HSSLC pass percentages show a clear improvement trend over the years in HSSLC, while HSLC pass rates have ranged between 64% and 75%. The gap between private and government school results remains a concern that NBSE and the state government are actively working to address.
NBSE HSLC Pass Percentage (Year-wise)
| Year | Students Appeared | Pass Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 22,765 | 72.07% |
| 2025 | 22,313 | 75.16% |
| 2024 | 21,589 | 71.87% |
| 2023 | 30,327 | 64.69% |
NBSE HSSLC Pass Percentage (Year-wise)
| Year | Students Appeared | Overall Pass % | Arts % | Commerce % | Science % |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 15,468 | 85.46% | 85.78% | 81.69% | 85.67% |
| 2025 | 16,365 | 82.44% | 84.05% | 81.40% | 76.54% |
| 2024 | 17,085 | 85.17% | 83.16% | 87.67% | 80.88% |
| 2023 | 17,117 | 76.27% | — | — | — |
In HSLC 2026, private school students passed at 86.13%, while government school students passed at only 43.26%. This gap of more than 40 percentage points shows the ongoing challenge in government school infrastructure across Nagaland’s districts.
In HSSLC 2026, female students outperformed male students in all three streams. In Arts, girls passed at 89.56% compared to boys at 80.84%. In Science, girls were at 87.57% versus boys at 83.13%. This trend of female students performing better than male students has continued for multiple years in NBSE HSSLC results.
The Science stream saw notable improvement in 2026 at 85.67% compared to 76.54% in 2025 – a jump of more than 9 percentage points in one year. This is the highest Science pass percentage in recent NBSE history.
NBSE Preparation Tips
Whether you are preparing for the NBSE compartmental exam 2026 or planning for next year’s main exam, a focused and consistent study plan makes the biggest difference.
For Compartmental Exam Students (June 9, 2026)
- Know your papers: Double-check which subjects you need to appear in from your admit card or school
- Target passing marks first: You need 33% in each paper. Start with chapters you are most comfortable with to build confidence and secure base marks
- Solve previous year papers: NBSE follows a consistent question pattern. Practising past papers is the fastest way to prepare in the limited time you have
- Read NCERT textbooks: For Science and Social Sciences, most NBSE questions come directly from NCERT chapters. Focus on definitions, diagrams, and examples
- Do not skip theory: Even in Mathematics, there are 1–2 mark theory questions. These are easy marks that many students miss
- Check your shift carefully: Some HSSLC papers are in the afternoon shift. Confirm the shift for your subject from the routine and arrive at least 30 minutes early
For Regular Students Preparing for NBSE 2027
- Start early: Students who begin serious revision 4–5 months before the exam consistently score higher than those who rush in January
- Focus on English: English is compulsory and carries 100 marks. Scoring 70+ in English can significantly improve your overall percentage
- Use NBSE model papers: NBSE releases official model question papers. Download them from the official website and solve them under timed conditions to simulate the real exam
- Maintain attendance: The 80% attendance rule is mandatory. Missing too many classes makes you ineligible for the exam form
- For Science stream HSSLC students: Start Physics and Chemistry numericals from Class 11 itself. These require regular practice and cannot be mastered in a few weeks
- Take internal assessment seriously: Internal marks (20–30 marks per subject) are given by your school. Submitting projects on time and attending class tests improves your total score without appearing in an extra exam
