NEIGRIHMS M.Sc FAQs
Ques. Is the M.Sc Community Health Nursing at NEIGRIHMS a full-time on-campus programme, and what is the mode of study?
Ans. Yes, the M.Sc (Community Health Nursing) at NEIGRIHMS is a full-time, on-campus, 2-year postgraduate programme. Students are required to attend regular theory classes, practical sessions, and clinical postings at NEIGRIHMS Hospital and affiliated community health settings in and around Shillong. There is no distance or online mode available for this programme. Attendance of 80% in theory and 100% in practicals is mandatory to be eligible for university examinations.
Ques. I completed my B.Sc Nursing without Midwifery (as a male candidate). Am I eligible for the Community Health Nursing speciality?
Ans. No, you are not eligible for the Community Health Nursing speciality if you have not studied Midwifery. As per the NEIGRIHMS prospectus, only those candidates who have studied Midwifery in their B.Sc Nursing programme are eligible for admission to the Community Health Nursing and Obstetric and Gynaecological Nursing specialities. Male candidates who did not opt for Midwifery must have qualified in any other subject recommended by the Indian Nursing Council in lieu of Midwifery, but this does not make them eligible for Community Health Nursing. You may consider other specialities such as Medical Surgical Nursing (Critical Care) or Child Health Nursing.
Ques. How competitive is admission to the Community Health Nursing speciality, and what score is typically needed in the entrance exam?
Ans. The Community Health Nursing speciality at NEIGRIHMS has only 2 seats out of a total of 10 M.Sc Nursing seats, making it extremely competitive. The entrance examination is a 100-mark MCQ paper covering all major nursing subjects. While NEIGRIHMS does not publish official cutoff scores, given the limited seats and all-India open competition, candidates typically need to score well above 60-70% to be in contention. Thorough preparation across all nursing subjects, especially Community Health Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing, and Obstetric Nursing, is essential.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Sc Nursing students at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at NEIGRIHMS is provided subject to availability and is not guaranteed. The institute has separate hostels for male and female students, but given the limited capacity, not all students may be accommodated on campus. Students who do not get hostel accommodation may need to arrange private accommodation near the campus. The hostel fee is Rs. 1,000 per year, and the mess fee is Rs. 120 per day (approximately Rs. 10,950 per quarter), payable quarterly by those availing hostel and mess facilities.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing M.Sc Community Health Nursing from NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Graduates of M.Sc Community Health Nursing from NEIGRIHMS are well-positioned for roles in public health nursing, community health programme management, nursing education, and research. Career options include positions as Nursing Officers or Senior Nursing Officers in central and state government hospitals, faculty positions in nursing colleges, roles in national health programmes (NHM, RNTCP, etc.), and opportunities with international health organisations. Being a central government institute, NEIGRIHMS graduates are also eligible to apply for Junior Resident Doctor (JRD) and other central government nursing posts. The M.Sc degree from a central institute affiliated to NEHU is widely recognised across India.
Ques. Can in-service (employed) candidates apply for M.Sc Nursing at NEIGRIHMS, and are there any special conditions?
Ans. Yes, in-service candidates can apply for M.Sc Nursing at NEIGRIHMS, but they must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer at the time of application and produce the original NOC at counselling. Additionally, if a student who is admitted subsequently applies for and joins a government or private job during the course, their studentship stands automatically cancelled and the Security Deposit of Rs. 15,000 is forfeited. In-service candidates joining the programme must also submit a relieving certificate from their employer before joining. These conditions are strictly enforced by the institute.
