JNMC MD Pediatrics FAQs

Ques. What super-specialisations (DM) can I pursue after MD Pediatrics from JNMC?

Ans. MD Pediatrics is the mandatory prerequisite for DM super-specialisations in Neonatology, Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Nephrology, Paediatric Gastroenterology, Paediatric Haematology-Oncology, and Paediatric Endocrinology. These DM programmes are offered at premier institutions like AIIMS, PGI Chandigarh, and other major medical colleges. JNMC's strong MD Pediatrics training provides a solid foundation for securing DM seats at these institutions.

Ques. Does JNMC have a NICU and PICU for MD Pediatrics training?

Ans. Yes. JNMC has a dedicated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) as part of its paediatric department. MD Pediatrics residents receive hands-on training in neonatal resuscitation, management of preterm infants, mechanical ventilation in neonates, and critical care management of sick children. The high patient volume in JNMC's paediatric wards and ICUs provides extensive practical exposure, which is essential for developing competence in paediatric critical care.

Ques. What is the workload like for MD Pediatrics residents at JNMC?

Ans. MD Pediatrics is one of the more demanding clinical residencies, with frequent on-call duties covering paediatric emergencies, NICU, and PICU. The paediatric department at JNMC handles a high volume of cases including neonatal emergencies, acute respiratory infections, diarrhoeal diseases, malnutrition, febrile illnesses, and paediatric surgical cases. The workload is significant but provides unparalleled clinical exposure that prepares residents for independent practice and super-specialisation.

Ques. Is MD Pediatrics at JNMC a good choice for someone interested in neonatology?

Ans. Yes. JNMC's NICU is one of the busiest in the region, handling a high volume of preterm births, birth asphyxia, neonatal sepsis, and other neonatal emergencies. MD Pediatrics residents at JNMC receive extensive neonatology training, which is excellent preparation for DM Neonatology. The high case load and experienced faculty in neonatology at JNMC make it a strong choice for candidates interested in pursuing a career in neonatal medicine.

Ques. What are the career prospects after MD Pediatrics from JNMC?

Ans. MD Pediatrics graduates from JNMC have excellent career prospects. They can work as paediatricians in government hospitals, set up private paediatric clinics, join academic medical colleges as faculty, or pursue DM super-specialisation. Paediatrics is one of the most in-demand specialisations in India given the large child population. JNMC's reputation as a premier central university medical college ensures that its MD Pediatrics graduates are well-regarded by employers and DM programme selection committees.

Ques. How does the AMU Internal Quota benefit MBBS graduates from AMU for MD Pediatrics?

Ans. The AMU Internal Quota reserves 50% of MD Pediatrics seats (approximately 8 seats) for candidates who completed their MBBS from AMU. Internal candidates compete in a separate merit list based on their NEET-PG rank, without the central government reservation norms applied to AIQ seats. This is a significant advantage for AMU MBBS graduates, as they compete in a smaller pool for a substantial number of seats. Given the popularity of Pediatrics, even internal quota seats require a competitive NEET-PG rank.
