UIET Chandigarh FAQs

Ques. How good is UIET Chandigarh?

Ans. Alumni say that while UIET Chandigarh may not be the best, it is a fairly good institution. It has been developing decently over the past years. It is backed by some good faculty, decent placement record, the stature of being an engineering department of world famous university i.e. Panjab University. CSE and IT being the most demanded job fields, enjoy the status of being the best branches of the college. Various companies like Infosys, Gemini Solutions, Unisys, AlertEnterprise, Deloitte, ZS Associates, ZScaler, Goldman Sachs, Adobe, KPMG, MuSigma, Aricent etc have been visiting the campus for placements.

Ques. What are some cons of studying at UIET Chandigarh?

Ans. If you are looking for class room studies then teachers here are not good. They all maybe scholars or have cleared the GATE exam twice or thrice, but they don't know how to teach.

I think there is a lack of conversation and interactions between seniors and juniors because all live in separate hostels and hostels are given on the basis of rank. One good thing which comes from the above is that you get a lot of free time to prepare for competitive exams as we need only 75% attendance. If one does not have 75% attendance, the student party will compel the authorities to make students having 35% attendance also sit for the exams. Lab practicals are limited to courses which in some cases are very outdated as compared to the latest technology available. Lack of good faculty/teachers for some subjects which are very interesting like Artificial intelligence.

An Improving College having various opportunities for students with various pros and cons to consider

Assessment, course curriculum and examination in the college

3-4 hours long labs of some subjects are unnecessary like they could assign us the practicals and just take weekly assessments Curriculum is very theoretical and deeply covers all the aspects of the subject. Practicals could be improvised with more creativity and thinking approach like problems. DSA, DBMS, OS, CNS, DCN, CAO are well taught and practicals also work good for placement purposes and they prepare us well for industry level work. Exams happen each semester with medium difficult minor exam of 1.5 hours, easy medium major exam of 3 hours, 3-4 hours long lab assessment final one with medium hard difficulty.

Various companies recruiting from the campus and highest package being offered

7th semester is the placement season. Companies visited: Amex, ZS Associates, Stonewain, KPMG, Deloitte, DeltaX, Infosys, Cognizant, Incedo, Caelius Consulting, GreyB, IndiaP2P, uTrade, L&T, Lumenci, ProcDNA, Netmartz Infotech, Unthinkable Solutions Avg offers made: 5 (Some took 1-2, some took 10, Zs mass recruited 30 students) Highest Package: 19 lpa by AMEX (Analyst) Lowest: 4.5 lpa by Infosys (SDE trainee) 75% students getting their placements (expected)

Fees of the course and hostel with the scholarship provided by the college

Odd semester fees: 65000 (average) Even semester fees: 36000 (average) Exam fees for each semester: 3200 (it is increasing by 200 rupees every year) Hostel fees: 6000 per semester who got allotted on merit basis else 4220 per month for guest basis hostels. Scholarships: Topper for each branch gets some amount. All Central and State Govt scholarships are shared for each category. Relaxation in fees is given to students admitted under PM J&K Relief policy (i dont remember proper name).

Infrastructure, library and various clubs of the college

Pros: PU Wifi Cheap cost of living. AC joshi library Rose Garden for evening walks. Peaceful campus and filled with nature. All boks related to curriculum are available in the library with multiple copies. PU and UIET have strong sports activities hosted in north campus. Mitra is social group conducting donations, visits to elder homes, blood donation camps. Telelabs and DiC provide various high end systems and equipments for projects with stipends and funding for research. Cons: Politics is heavy. PU Wifi is slow with various servers banned. Freshers and Graduation party are to be organised by the students itself, not by seniors or any club. College Clubs are not that good (Bpc, Edc, Magboard, Mitra, Rotaract, Jugaad, Debsoc) Lecture Halls are not Air Conditioned, some are but their condition is not appropriate. Lecture Halls need serious rennovation. Compact Hostel rooms and old. Washrooms are bad. Fests: UIET MUN: Parliamentary Debate Legacy (Aug-Sept) Goonj (March-Apr) Rosefest (Feb)

What are the facilities provided in the college hostel?

Facilities: Security Carpenter Cleaners Washrooms for each block Laundry Barber Gym Mess Canteen Fan Bed without bedding Table Chair Cooler (extra fees added) Meal Quality: Average Canteen Menu: Paranthe (Paneer, Pyaaz, Aloo) Chilla Pav Bhaji (Sometimes) Tea Coffee Milk Sandwiches Poha Paneer Bhurji Egg Bhurji Egg roll Samosa Patties Spring Rolls (Soemtime) Manchurian (Sometime) Softdrinks Snacks (Chips, Nachos) Packed items Mess Menu: Dal (All types on different days) Rice Tandoori Roti Tawa Roti Paneer Sabzi(Monday and Wednesday) Veg Sabzi (Gobhi aloo, chana masala, chhole, rajma, curry, baigan aloo) PGs: Sector 38, 34, 15, 37 Hostel is very cheap and affordable.

Faculties, examination pattern and learning experience in the campus

1 minor exam: 30 marks (medium difficult) 1 major exam: 50 marks (easy medium) Rest 20 marks: Attendance, Assignment/PPT/Quiz Lab Practicals: 50 marks including weekly performance with file and final assessment (medium difficult) For CSE: 5 subjects and 3-4 labs each semester Some subject like Computer Graphics didn't seem relevant to me as it was based on OPENGL. Rest all subjects and practicals were adequate. Faculty I liked: Naveen Aggarwal Mamta Juneja Sakshi Kaushal Priyanka Roy Ajay Mittal They are experienced and pretty understanding towards the students, available for every doubt and also are very supportive. Faculty I didn't like: Vishal Gupta: handwritten assignments are assigned by him, that seems lame because we have internships to work on and it consumes a lot of time. Also he is very rigid in marking. Anu Jhamb: She can be contacted through calls only. Savita Gupta: She is unreachable and is unavailable, she made us wait for 3 weeks for a sign. Sarabjeet Singh: He is TPO, sounds sweet and caring but he didn't help me to avail placement in OYO for which I wanted a NOC and although I got my office work online, happened same with my friend who wanted NOC for CRED. Harish Kumar: He is unavailable mostly, uses Master's students and PhD students to handle his labs. Never taught us anything, once asked me to work on an internship in a project he was handling, I agreed but he ghosted me even after mailing and texting him twice. Faculty: Student = 1:8 Some faculties are easily approached, some are very busy in meetings you need to text them for appointment. Students who fail:10-15 (they have their reasons)

Admission process and eligibility criteria of the college

I got admissions in CSE: UIET THDC-IHET IET Lucknow Various Private Colleges Various other colleges in different branches like ECE and Mech. I chose UIET: Amazon took 13 students from here, placements were good as compared to others. Chandigarh as a location is best. UIET is tier 1 because of PU. Heard positive reviews from different sources. I got rejection from JoSAA counselling because of my low JEE rank so didn't able to make it to IIITs or NITs. For admission at UIET: Apply in JAC Chandigarh counselling using JEE Score. Upload documents for verification and eligibility. Report physically for physical verification. You will be given admission letter. Cutoff during my time for cse was:15000-30000 AIR JEE Rank

I also applied for JOSAA counselling but due to my low rank in JEE mains, I couldn't get any NIT or IIIT. I was getting YMCA or DCRUST but choose UIET over them, because of its location. It is situated in main Chandigarh and very near to my home. Moreover, it's placements are better than both of them.

I got around 85000 rank in jee mains . It was one of the best option for me considering its ranking and structure. It is a government college and is under Panjab University campus ,hence it has all the facilities and is well connected. Life is good here . Also uiet placement record is also better than most of the colleges i was getting at this rank . So these all things led me to choose uiet over any other college .

Admission:

This college is very affordable. Admission is done on the basis of JEE MAINS exam and JAC Chandigarh councelling. I have given many exams but i choose this college because of affordability, placements and Chandigarh. But after I came here I found the reality that all things are good in other branches but not in EEE. Students of EEE have very low CGPA so they cant sit in placement all because of egoistic teachers. If I have time machine, I'd never opt for EEE Most of the companies don't allow Biotechnology branch for placements

UIET Chandigarh: 70 Answered Questions

How is IIIT Bhubaneswar CSE? Is it better than NIT Patna IT and UIET CSE?

Madhav AnejaLived in Chandigarh, India

As a student of UIET CSE, I will share some merits and demerits of the same with you-

Merits-

  1. If you are a good coder, UIET offers decent placement opportunities in the CSE branch.
  2. There is a 24*7 library facility.
  3. You’ll get the ‘Panjab University’ tag.
  4. It is located in Chandigarh which is a serene, beautiful, and well-planned city.
  5. Your personality and leadership qualities will improve.

Demerits-

  1. The teaching environment isn’t good. You’ll have to learn by yourself, regardless of branch.
  2. The tag of ‘IITs’ or ‘NITs’ holds much more significance.
  3. You might not get the desired placement. In that case, you’ll be sitting for some competitive exam. For a placement in 4.5-5 LPA slab, you’ll have to work hard.

NIT Patna IT is a good option because it offers good placements and an NIT tag. As far as IIIT Bhubaneswar CSE is concerned, you can check all the information related to it and compare it with the other two.

Which college should I choose between UIET Chandigarh and Thapar University for CSE?

Prerona Datta
Madhav AnejaLived in Chandigarh, India

To help you choose between UIET and Thapar University, here are a few comparisons-

  • Infrastructure- The infrastructure of UIET is not good. Thapar University has a good infrastructure and you will really like it when you visit the institution. Also, do check the pictures of Thapar on instagram.
  •  Fees- The fees for Thapar University is extremely high. On the other hand, UIET fees are so affordable that you won’t even feel like you are paying college fees.
  • Research- Panjab University is doing good in the area of research. But UIET in itself has not produced much output yet. On the other hand, Thapar excels in research quality. However, PU has a government funded innovation center and you may get an internship over there. This makes UIET also a good choice for a career in research.
  • Brand Value- Panjab University is a big brand. However, its Engineering department is not as well recognized. Thapar is a well known engineering institution that has a high reputation in North India. It has a brand value at par with BITS and NITs.
  • Alumni Network- UIET is new and has virtually no alumni network. Thapar is old enough and has a wide alumni network spread across various countries.

Thus, after considering various parameters, I would suggest you to opt for Thapar University for your CSE if its high fees is not an issue.

Can a branch be upgraded in Thapar University Patiala and UIET Chandigarh on the basis of your first year CGPA?

Sayantani Barman
Madhav AnejaLived in Chandigarh, India

At Thapar University, the branch change does not depend on your CGPA. There is a separate process for the same.

  • The 1st year students have to give a December Test by the end of their 1st semester. The syllabus for this test is general class 12 PCM and the subjects covered in the 1st semester.
  • A list ranking all the students appearing for this test is made. Based on this list, a counseling session is held to fill in the vacant seats in all the branches.
  • In case of a tie, JEE Rank is given preference.

So, if you are desperate to get your branch changed at Thapar University, all you need to do is prepare well for this particular test.

With its strong faculty, facilities, and industry connections, you can get a solid foundation for a career in the IT sector. However, as with any program, it's important to do your research, consider your own interests and strengths, and make an informed decision based on your individual needs and goals.

When it comes to choosing a college for pursuing CSE, it's important to consider the quality of education, the faculty, the campus, and most importantly, the crowd that you'll be studying with. It would be suggested that UIET Chandigarh is a better option than CGC Landran for pursuing CSE based on the following reasons:

  • UIET admits students through JEE Main rank, which means that you'll be studying with like-minded and intellectual individuals who have secured a good rank in the entrance exam. This ensures that you'll be studying in a crowd that is serious about their education and will motivate you to do your best as well.
  • The faculty at UIET is better as compared to CGC Landran, which is crucial when it comes to the quality of education you'll be receiving. • UIET is located in the main city of Chandigarh, which is a major advantage as you'll have easy access to various resources such as libraries, cafes, and other places that can help you unwind after a long day of studying.
  • While the campus may not be as beautiful as some other colleges in the area, being located on the south campus of Panjab University, the overall experience and the grooming you'll receive at UIET make it a better option for pursuing CSE.
