JHC Mumbai FAQs

Ques. How does Jai Hind College’s location in Mumbai actually benefit students?

Ans. Being located at Churchgate, Jai Hind provides access to everything, it's literally walking distance across the board for internships in media houses, finance firms, and NGOs. Even location-wise to cultural hubs like NCPA, Marine Drive, and art galleries nearby means exposure isn't limited to academia, the city becomes an extension of the classroom for us.

Ques. What makes the campus life at Jai Hind different from other Mumbai colleges?

Ans. There is a huge buzz at Jai Hind with events run by students, like Detour (BMM fest) and Entourage (BMS fest). We as students manage our own events on (marketing) sponsorships, PR and logistics etc. It literally feels like managing a startup. This is not something that every college allows you to experience at that scale.

Ques. Do students at Jai Hind feel the teaching style is more traditional or modern?

Ans. Most faculty are not stuffy or old-fashioned at JHC Mumbai. In programs like BMM and BMS, faculty focus on assignments that measure presentations, projects and case studies, rather than rote learning. Even in the more theory based subjects faculty relate back to real-life examples in Mumbai, which engage us more in both classes and learning.

Ques. How strong is the peer culture at Jai Hind competitive or collaborative?

Ans. At JHC it’s probably a mix, but in a good way. Since many of the students here are from various regions of India, you get a diverse motivated group as a peer group. While competition exists around placements and fests, on a day-to-day basis it feels more collaborative—people share notes, help each other with project work, and work together in clubs. That balance is a great benefit for all of us.

EscalationExpert

I think the beauty of the crowd in KC College mainly comes from the camaraderie and the involvement in various clubs and events like SCOPE and the sports day. In my B.Com program, we have a great mix of students who are all focused on their goals but still find time to socialize and participate in extracurricular activities. The friendly nature of both students and faculty creates a warm environment that feels like a community.

What is the harsh reality of Jai Hind College?

GPUGladiator

Jai Hind College admits 170 students into the psychology program in FYBA, but by the time TYBA rolls around, 132 of them have to leave because there aren't enough seats for psychology majors. This year, due to the pandemic, other colleges aren't taking outside students and are prioritizing their own, leaving us with the choice of either settling for part majors or abandoning our career plans. They also delayed giving us the results, so by the time we got them, the few colleges that were open to outsiders had already closed admissions.

When we ask them to add more seats, they tell us to reach out to Mumbai University, but the university tells us to tell the colleges to contact them. It's especially frustrating when we qualify for a full major with over 80% marks. The principal doesn't reply to our emails, and the teachers just keep saying we should settle for part majors. Meanwhile, colleges like Mithibai and KC are giving spots to all their internal students who scored 75% and above. It feels really unfair, especially during this pandemic when other institutions are going out of their way to support students, but our college just isn't willing to help. I wouldn't suggest Jai Hind to anyone!

What is it like to be a student at Jai Hind College?

KernelZeta

I'm a BCom student at Jai Hind, and here's how my two years have been:

Festivals: All year round, you'll see stalls set up by companies sponsoring events. Our college is full of festivals, and it's fair to say we host the most grand-scale festivals.

Co-curriculars: If you join in, you'll probably spend more time on these activities than in class. I've been actively involved for two years, and in my final year, I'm focusing more on side reading to become more skilled than the average BCom student.

Extra-curriculars: There are loads of chances to take on projects with different associations in subjects like Accountancy, Economics, Political Science, English, Commerce, History, and more. Successful projects might even get you to represent the college at the University level.

Friendships: You'll always have friends around. You’ll find people you can connect with easily.

Canteen/Cafeteria: The food here is a favorite among students, except maybe for those into modeling or fitness. It's tasty and affordable.

Q. Is Jai Hind a mini world in itself?
A. Absolutely!

Overall, Jai Hind College is a blast. Every college feels like its own little world. Students everywhere have stories like mine about their colleges. I've shared my experiences from Jai Hind. If you liked what you read, consider applying and joining us!

What are the chances of getting admission in Jai Hind College, SK Somaiya College, and HR College Mumbai after a drop year and with 70 in the SC category?

TokenTemplar

Hope you're doing well.

Don't stress about taking a gap year; it won't block your admission chances. The course you choose is what really matters. Some courses like BSc in Physics (Hons) and BA PS (Hons) might be tougher to get into, but I'm not entirely certain. It's a good idea to look at the previous year's cutoffs to get a better idea. Being a girl and in the SC category definitely works in your favor. In my opinion, there's more than a 90% chance you'll get into these colleges.

Good luck!

The curriculum is designed to be relevant to real-life situations, which I really appreciate. Plus, there are plenty of co-curricular activities that keep the campus life engaging.

The campus is spacious, and there are various events happening regularly that enhance the overall college experience. Overall, I feel like I'm getting a solid education here while also enjoying my time.
