National Geophysical Research Institute [NGRI] was established in the year 1961 with the mission to carry out research in multidisciplinary areas of Earth Sciences. The Institute plays a pivotal role in the exploration of Hydrocarbons, Mineral and Groundwater resources in addition to studies in Engineering Geophysics, Seismology, Geo dynamics and Geo environment. NGRI’s basic objectives relate in the fields of Exploration of Hydrocarbons/Coal, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geophysics, Exploration, Assessment, Management of Groundwater Resources, Earthquake Hazard Assessment, Structure of the Earth’s Interior, History of its Evolution in Space & Time, Geo-environmental Studies and Development of Geophysical Instruments. The institute offers graduate and post graduate degree level courses in field like Earthquake hazard assessment, Engineering geophysics, Groundwater management studies, Natural resource exploration, Marine geophysical studies and Antarctic studies among others and has provided many skilled professionals to the industry since its inception.

The course is designed with the guidance of many different colleges and universities. The syllabus comprises of many subjects involving many practical modules, language and communication skills, etc. It overall covers all the aspects which are necessary for a Ph.D. student.
A Ph.D. aspiring student needs a course curriculum that is always up to date and is made with all the research work. It is also necessary that all the important things are covered in the course curriculum. The exams are also taken on a regular basis.
We are taught about the applied branch of geophysics to have a in depth knowledge of ore, hydrocarbons, minerals, groundwater reservoirs, geothermal reservoirs . We learn about the atmospheric physics , dynamic and characteristic in order to make a comparative study about the outer atmosphere of the earth. We also have to carry out a field study after the completion of the course.
It is a three year program in which a students gains a doctorate degree in physics. It includes 4 to 6 core subjects with research , thermodynamics , nano physics etc. We are told about the basic laws of nature and how we should deal with the environment around.
The course curriculum revolves around science, engineering, and technology, and students can focus on evolving the students to be future scientists in these streams. The course is very structured to be finished within 4 years.
There are different areas of focus in this Ph.D. course and students can go for any area that they are interested in. The main criterion is that students should have proper knowledge and degree to pursue that area of research.
The Ph.D course curriculum offered by our college is zestful and well-ordered. I personally believe that the course gives very commanding skills and refines our comprehensive disclosure. We have internal as well as semester exams.
The course curriculum of my current course is really good. The courses are very easy to understand and the exam structure is orderly and thorough. The labs are well-equipped and both exams and labs are conducted in such a way that we don't have much pressure and stress.
A 3 year PhD in Earth Science from National Geophysical Research Institute is UGC approved and thus follow strict UGC guideline.Case studies and thesis work are given more priority in evaluating the students for their PhD assessment
