GCQ BA(English) FAQs
Ques. Is there an entrance exam for BA (English) admission at GCQ Quepem, or is it purely merit-based?
Ans. Admission to BA (English) at GCQ Quepem is purely merit-based on 12th (HSSC) marks. There is no entrance exam. Students apply through the DHE Goa centralised e-Samarth portal (goaadmission.samarth.ac.in), and merit lists are prepared based on aggregate marks in the qualifying examination. Students from CBSE, ICSE, or other boards are also eligible but must obtain an Eligibility Certificate from Goa University. Given the government college status and highly affordable fees, seats are competitive, especially for General category students from outside Goa.
Ques. What is the syllabus for BA (English) at GCQ under NEP 2020, and what kind of literature is covered?
Ans. The BA (English) programme at GCQ follows the Goa University NEP 2020 revised syllabus for English. The curriculum covers a wide range of literature including British literature (from Old English to contemporary), Indian writing in English, world literature in translation, postcolonial literature, women's writing, and science fiction. It also includes courses in linguistics, literary theory and criticism, and creative writing. The Languages Laboratory at GCQ supports practical language skill development. The revised syllabus (approved by Goa University in 2024) includes updated texts and contemporary authors, making it relevant for students pursuing careers in media, content writing, and academia.
Ques. What is the attendance requirement at GCQ, and what happens if I fall short?
Ans. As per Goa University Ordinance OA-17, students must maintain a minimum cumulative attendance of 75% of total lectures and practicals in a semester, and a minimum of 50% attendance in any individual paper/course. Students who fail to meet the 75% requirement are not eligible to appear for the Semester End Assessment (SEA) and must seek re-admission in the subsequent academic year. Relaxations are available for medical grounds (up to 25% absence with medical certificate), NCC/NSS/Sports participation (marked as 'D' - on duty), and maternity leave (additional 25% relaxation for women). Monthly attendance is displayed on the college notice board, and students are advised to track their attendance regularly.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for BA students at GCQ Quepem?
Ans. Currently, there is no hostel facility available at GCQ Quepem for students. A 50-bedded girls hostel of international standard has been sanctioned under RUSA funding and is under construction, tentatively expected to be available by the end of the 2026-27 academic year. Male students and students from outside Quepem will need to arrange private accommodation in the surrounding areas. The college is located about 2 km from Quepem town, and local transport and private accommodation options are available in the vicinity. The college has three buses that are used for field trips and educational activities.
Ques. What are the career options after completing BA (English) from GCQ Quepem?
Ans. A BA (English) degree from GCQ opens up diverse career paths. Graduates can pursue careers as teachers, content writers, journalists, editors, translators, public relations executives, social workers, or civil servants (UPSC/GPSC). Many students go on to pursue MA in English at Goa University or other universities, B.Ed. for teaching careers, or professional courses in mass communication, journalism, or digital marketing. The Goa University affiliation ensures the degree is well-recognised across India. Employment areas include media organisations, publishing firms, educational institutions, government departments, NGOs, and multinational companies with communication-focused roles.
Ques. How does the NEP 2020 multi-point exit system work for BA (English) at GCQ, and can I re-enter later?
Ans. Under NEP 2020, the BA programme at GCQ offers flexible exit options. After completing Year 1 (2 semesters), students can exit with a Certificate in English. After Year 2 (4 semesters), students can exit with a Diploma in English. After completing all 3 years (6 semesters), students receive the full BA degree with Honours in English. This is particularly useful for students who need to discontinue studies due to personal, financial, or professional reasons, as they leave with a recognised qualification. Students who exit early can re-enter the programme later to complete the remaining years, subject to Goa University's Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) framework and re-admission rules.
