Ans. I would recommend you choose IIT over NIT any day irrespective of the branch because it is recognized globally. The quality of packages and roles offered are also better and with the right motivation and determination, one can even change his branch to a better one. At IIT Kanpur, I would advise you to go for Chemical rather than Civil. BTech Chemical Engineering combined with Masters in Petroleum Engineering is the highest paying bracket in the USA with more than 74000 Jobs available for outsiders in the Middle East, US, and Canada at a five yr median of $ 18600. Additionally, at IIT Kanpur the ocean of electives to choose from enables you to pursue CS course side by side through certifications in 64/128/256 bit SSL Encryption, Data Structures, and Oracle which have great importance. While CS students can be found everywhere, you will find only a few Chemical Engineers. Concludingly, it’s best to go for IIT Kanpur Chemical for the long term or IIT Kanpur Civil with a branch change to EEE or Mechanical in mind.Read more

Ans. The general preference order is College wise - IIT Bombay > IIT Kanpur > IIT Roorkee Branch wise - CS > Mechanical ~ Electrical. However, this is a popular trend, and you don't have to follow it. It is best to make a decision based on your individual preferences. Doing something that interests you is considerably superior in the long run to doing something you dislike solely for money since, after a few years, money no longer motivates you. Here are some information to make your decision easier:- The placement scenario for EE in IIT Kanpur is good and stands next to the CS department in the table. Though EE is the largest department when compared with others it still maintains its record well in placements. The NIRF Ranking of IIT Bombay is 3 , IIT Kanpur is 4 and IIT Roorkee is 5 . The Average placement at IIT Bombay Mechanical is 21.82 LPA with IIT Kanpur Electrical is 26.27 LPA and IIT Roorkee CSE is 22 LPA. More than 250 companies visited IIT Kanpur campus in 2023. EE offers specialisations like VLSI, SPCom, RF & Microwave, Power Engineering, Control & Automation . Placements for some of these specializations are 100 %, especially for VLSI, SPCom & RF. Ans. Most students join IITs with the mindset of changing their branch to a more preferred one after the first year. But in reality, once you come here you will realize that branch hardly matters here. This is because most students, especially those with no specific area of interest, which seems to be your case too, tend to go for non-core jobs for which the branch does not matter. What matters is your CPI and your overall profile and achievements. Those adamant about changing their branch can avail of the facility easily. The branch change depends on 2 factors, your CGPA and the availability of seats in the branch you want to get changed into. For Civil, Material Science, Aerospace, and Physics, you need a CGPA of around 6.5–7.5 For Economics, Mathematics Scientific Computing, Chemical, and Mechanical you need a CGPA of around 7.5–8.5 For Mechanical or Electrical, you need an 8.6+ CGPA For CS, you will need nothing less than a 10 CGPA in both the semesters Honestly, it’s almost impossible to get a branch change into top branches like Mech, Electrical, or CSE.
