UPEI offers 200+ scholarships and awards each year, of which 8+ are accessible to Indian applicants across UG, PG and PhD levels.
Indian students target UPEI because Charlottetown tuition is one of the lowest in eastern Canada. This article maps every award you can actually claim, the amount in INR and the exact date to apply by.
- Standard UG tuition: CAD 15,868 per year (INR 10.91 Lakhs)
- With International Entrance Award at top tier (CAD 3,000): CAD 12,868 net (INR 8.85 Lakhs)
- Year 2 with CSA Academic Excellence added on top (CAD 3,000): CAD 9,868 net (INR 6.78 Lakhs)
- Next hard deadline for internal donor awards: October 1, 2026 (fall cycle)
Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 CAD = INR 68.74 as of August 2026. CSA in this article refers to UPEI’s Celebrating Student Achievement Awards Program, the umbrella that houses UPEI’s automatic merit awards.

University of Prince Edward Island Scholarships for UG Students
UPEI offers Indian undergraduates two automatic routes plus a re-entry route from year 2 onward. All figures below come from UPEI’s Scholarships and Awards Office pages.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility for Indians | Application | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Entrance Award | CAD 1,000 to CAD 3,000 (INR 0.69 to 2.06 Lakhs), one-time, non-renewable | New international UG, converted 90 to 100% average or top 5 to 10% class rank, extracurricular record, English proficiency | Automatic on admission; noted on offer letter | Apply early; tied to admission cycle |
| CSA Academic Excellence Award (year 2 onward) | CAD 500 to CAD 3,000 (INR 0.34 to 2.06 Lakhs) per year, tiered by GPA band 80 to 95%+ | Indian UG in year 2, 3 or 4 with full-time load across prior fall and winter, 80% GPA minimum | Automatic assessment by the Scholarships and Awards Office | Assessed after final grades each spring |
| Emergency International Student Bursary | Variable, need-based | International UG in documented financial emergency | Separate application via UPEI student portal | Rolling |
| Application-based donor awards (fall cycle) | Varies by donor | All UG including Indians; a single form covers many awards | UPEI Scholarship and Award Portal | October 1, 2026 |
| Application-based donor awards (winter cycle) | Varies by donor | All UG including Indians | UPEI Scholarship and Award Portal | February 1, 2027 |
The Guaranteed Entrance Scholarship, IB Diploma Entrance Scholarship and George Coles Bursary are restricted to Canadian citizens, permanent residents or Prince Edward Island high-school graduates. Indian applicants can skip those lines and treat the International Entrance Award as the year-1 anchor.
The path Indian freshers actually take at UPEI:
- Accept the International Entrance Award attached to your admission offer letter.
- Enter year 2 with full-time fall and winter enrolment so the CSA Academic Excellence Award triggers automatically.
- File the UPEI donor-award portal application each October 1 and February 1 for named awards outside the automatic pool.
See the UPEI admission cycle guide for how the offer letter itself shows the entrance-award line item.
University of Prince Edward Island Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Master’s funding at UPEI is a stack, not a single ticket. Indian PG applicants combine a graduate assistantship, a program-specific stipend and, where offered, a Faculty of Graduate Studies donor award.
| Scholarship or Award | Value | Level and Eligibility | How to Access | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) | Paid hourly at department-set rate | Full-time master’s, including international students; arranged with supervisor | Speak to supervisor and department chair; postings on UPEI HR site | Rolling each semester |
| Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) | Paid stipend funded from supervisor grant | Master’s students admitted to a research-active lab, including Indians | Named in the admission offer, or confirmed after enrolment | Rolling; tied to grant cycle |
| Program-specific stipends and bursaries | Amount varies by faculty and program | Cohort awards, for example within Sustainable Design Engineering, MSc Vet Med, MBA Global Leadership | Contact the graduate program office directly | Program-specific |
| Faculty of Graduate Studies donor awards | Varies by donor | Enrolled master’s students, including international | Single form via UPEI Scholarship and Award Portal | October 1, 2026 (fall) and February 1, 2027 (winter) |
| Emergency International Student Bursary | Variable, need-based | International PG in documented financial emergency | Separate portal application | Rolling |
Reddit Insight: Indian MSc applicants on r/UPEI report a funded GRA offer is usually confirmed inside the admission email itself. If the offer letter names no stipend, the seat is self-funded. Any later add-on is discretionary and depends on the supervisor’s grant balance.
The Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master’s (CGS-M) is worth CAD 27,000 (INR 18.56 Lakhs) for 12 months. Eligibility is restricted to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and Protected Persons. Indian passport holders qualify only after obtaining PR.
See the UPEI programs and fees page for the sticker-price on each master’s before scholarships stack in.
India-Specific Scholarships at University of Prince Edward Island
UPEI does not publish India-only awards. Indian applicants instead stack UPEI’s international awards with India-side foundation scholarships. The three that Indians heading to UPEI most often win are listed below with the confirmed 2026 cycle amounts.
| Scholarship | Value | Who Runs It | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| K. C. Mahindra Scholarships for Post-Graduate Studies Abroad | Interest-free loan scholarship up to INR 10 Lakhs for the top 3 scholars, up to INR 5 Lakhs for other selected applicants | K. C. Mahindra Education Trust | Indian citizen, first-class UG, secured or applied to a master’s abroad starting between August and February of the cycle | Tentative April 30, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship | Gift plus interest-free loan mix, value confirmed post-interview each cycle | Tata Trusts | Indian citizen with UG from a recognised Indian university; pursuing overseas master’s, PhD or postdoc in any stream | Tentative January 5 to March 29, 2027 (2026 cycle closed) |
| Education Future International Scholarship | Partial funding, INR 2 Lakhs to INR 10 Lakhs | Education Future Foundation | Indian citizens with a Canadian admission offer, means-tested | Tentative March 31, 2027 (annual cycle) |
Reddit Insight: Indian PG students report a common stack: a UPEI graduate assistantship plus a KC Mahindra loan scholarship. The Mahindra amount sits on top of the UPEI package, not against it. It runs through an Indian trust, so UPEI stipend calculations ignore it.
UPEI’s Charlottetown UG tuition is around CAD 15,868 for most programs, or INR 10.91 Lakhs at current FX. A KC Mahindra top-scholar award of INR 10 Lakhs on its own clears one full year of undergraduate fees. Cross-check your program cost on the UPEI overview page and fee tables before you apply.
University of Prince Edward Island PhD Scholarships
PhD funding at UPEI is built on three layers: departmental stipends from supervisor grants, the Vanier CGS for top-performing doctoral candidates and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship for social-sciences work. Indian doctoral candidates are eligible for the first two. Trudeau is restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility for Indians | Application Route | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) | CAD 50,000 (INR 34.37 Lakhs) per year for 3 years, total CAD 150,000 (INR 103.11 Lakhs) | Open to international doctoral candidates including Indians, pursuing a first PhD at a Canadian institution | Nomination by UPEI; internal expression of interest first, then Vanier application via the supervisor | Tentative internal deadline early October 2026; national portal closes late October each year |
| Departmental doctoral stipend | Amount varies by supervisor grant; eastern-Canadian science PhD stipends typically fall in the CAD 18,000 to CAD 24,000 (INR 12.37 to 16.50 Lakhs) per-year band when a GRA is bundled in | PhD admits in research-active labs, including Indians | Named in the admission offer; supervisor initiates | Rolling; tied to lab funding cycle |
| Faculty of Graduate Studies PhD awards (application-based) | Varies by donor | Enrolled PhD students, including Indians | UPEI Scholarship and Award Portal | October 1, 2026 (fall cycle) and February 1, 2027 (winter cycle) |
| Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship | Up to CAD 60,000 (INR 41.24 Lakhs) per year for up to 3 years, plus a travel allowance | Canadian citizens and permanent residents only; Indian PhD applicants must hold Canadian PR to apply | Trudeau Foundation portal after UPEI PhD admission | Tentative October 30, 2026 (annual cycle) |
UPEI’s Faculty of Graduate Studies confirms that Vanier and CGS-M allocations are set nationally, and the UPEI institutional quota is small. Practically, the shortlist begins with the supervisor: no supervisor sign-off, no nomination.
Line up a supervisor letter before September if you plan to chase Vanier for the following fall intake. Miss that window and the internal nomination train has already left.
External Government Scholarships for University of Prince Edward Island Students
Indian applicants at UPEI can layer national-level Canadian and Commonwealth awards on top of the UPEI package. Deadlines here are largely September to October, so plan them alongside the admission timeline.
| Award | Value | Level and Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rhodes Scholarship (India constituency, tenable at Oxford; listed on UPEI’s external awards page) | Full tuition, stipend and travel to study at the University of Oxford | Indian citizens aged 19 to 25 with a strong UG record; used by UPEI graduates applying outward for PG | Tentative July 31, 2026 for the India constituency (annual cycle) |
| McCall MacBain Scholarships (McGill, Canada) | Full master’s tuition plus a living stipend at McGill University | Any nationality; final-year UG or recent graduate; Indians commonly apply after a UPEI UG for a Canadian master’s move | Tentative June 24, 2026 and September 24, 2026 (two funding rounds) |
| Canadian Traditional Fulbright Student Award | Contribution toward tuition and living costs for study or research in the United States | Canadian citizens; Indian PRs at UPEI qualify only after naturalisation | Tentative September 15, 2026 |
| Commonwealth Scholarship (Canada stream) | Master’s or doctoral funding at Canadian universities, administered by CBIE and Global Affairs Canada | Indian citizens under 40 with a first-class UG (for master’s) or a high second-class PG (for PhD) | Notified via India’s External Scholarship Division; tentative February 15, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| MEXT Scholarships (Government of Japan) | Full tuition and stipend for study in Japan | Indian citizens looking to move from Canada to Japan for a follow-on PG programme | Tentative February 28, 2027 and July 31, 2027 (two intake windows) |

University of Prince Edward Island Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum funding stack an Indian undergraduate at UPEI can realistically build in year 1?
Ans. An Indian UG can stack UPEI’s International Entrance Award of up to CAD 3,000 (INR 2.06 Lakhs) with an India-side award like Education Future for INR 2 to 10 Lakhs. Combined at maximum value, year 1 net cost drops from CAD 15,868 (INR 10.91 Lakhs) to roughly CAD 8,000 (INR 5.50 Lakhs). There is no single full-ride offer for UPEI freshers, so stacking is the model.
Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for UPEI scholarships to hit the fall 2026 intake?
Ans. Submit the UPEI admission form early, ideally six months before September 2026, so the International Entrance Award assessment is completed with your offer. Application-based donor awards open on the UPEI Scholarship and Award Portal and close on October 1, 2026 for the fall cycle. Second-semester donor applications close on February 1, 2027.
Ques. Do Indian applicants need to file a separate scholarship form at UPEI, or is it automatic?
Ans. The International Entrance Award and the CSA Academic Excellence Award are automatic; you do not fill anything extra. Donor-funded awards, the Emergency International Student Bursary and any Faculty of Graduate Studies award require a separate submission. Use the UPEI Scholarship and Award Portal and file by October 1 or February 1.
Ques. What academic threshold do Indian applicants need for the UPEI International Entrance Award?
Ans. UPEI lists a converted admission average of 90 to 100%, or a top 5 to 10% class ranking. Documented extracurriculars and English proficiency are also required. In practice, CBSE and ISC applicants with a 90%+ 12th-grade aggregate and IELTS 6.5 comfortably meet the bar.
Ques. Is the Vanier CGS realistic for an Indian PhD applicant at UPEI?
Ans. Yes, but only after you have a confirmed UPEI PhD offer and a supervisor willing to nominate. Vanier pays CAD 50,000 (INR 34.37 Lakhs) per year for three years and is open to international candidates. UPEI’s institutional quota is small, so the internal nomination cycle in early October is the real gatekeeper, not the national deadline.
Ques. Will a UPEI scholarship cover Charlottetown living costs, not just tuition?
Ans. The International Entrance Award and CSA Academic Excellence peak at CAD 3,000 (INR 2.06 Lakhs) each. Both effectively cover tuition, not rent. Charlottetown living costs run CAD 12,000 to 15,000 (INR 8.25 to 10.31 Lakhs) per academic year; PG students plug the gap with graduate assistantships, while UG students plug it with the India-side loan scholarships listed above.

- I like how welcoming everyone is and how the co-op program helps capable students to find internships.
- You can find places to rent on Kijiji (website) very easily - roughly 500 CAD/month in sharing

- Specifically for the MBA course the course are highly relatable for the specialization. University provide lot of support for international students like immigration consultation, consulting related course planning, offering medical insurance and many other things. Inclusivity is something everyone give lot of consideration.
Dislikes
- There is nothing I would think as I dislike about the college but there is one thing about the location. The transport facilities are not much feasible here. Not many layouts for shopping. But for someone who wanted to have a slow and calm life this is the place
Scholarship
- There lot of Scholarship for the course before the course starts and few of them in between the courses as well. The eligibility is determined with a cover letter and if required an additional interview with the committee member. Not sure about the number of people who got the scholarship however the program as a whole is very supportive towards international students
- I found it in a platform called Kijiji. I pay CAD 675. The utilities included are Washer, Dryer, WiFi, fully furnished, heater, all kitchen appliances included. I didn't encounter any challenges to be honest. Make sure to contact the owner and ask them to show around the place through a video call. Sign a lease for sure. My accommodation is 15 mins far from the University. Most of the students stay near the University.

- Low tuition cost was the main choice and PR in the providence of PEI.
I feel trapped and the university doesn’t even have a great value of education. It’s like studying in India itself except it gets you a PR. It’s best to come after bachelors that too in bigger cities like Toronto for the best experience. Here it’s way too cold, you got to walk a lots, no bus on weekends so again stuck where you are. It’s tuff.

- Affordability and good location. This is one of the cheapest public university.
Scholarship
Yes. $1000 entrance scholarship on my 1st year. There was no any application required for this. They just gave the scholarship according to our high school grades.
I really am proud to be a part of UPEI. It has helped me in growing my interpersonal characteristics. With around 4000 students from more than 70 countries around the world, i have got an opportunity to learn about a lot of cultures and values.
Scholarship
Financial aid through provincial and federal loans.
Coming with the previous schooling in biology, I felt ready to take on the hard program of nursing. Around Christmas time, I decided to apply. The application was straight forward and did not take long. The fee was $50, and it was the best $50 I ever spent. I first received acceptance into my second choice program of chemistry, and then a few weeks later I got my acceptance into nursing.
Scholarship
To apply for student loans you have to go through your home province and just provide them with some information such as tuition cost, proof of enrolment, and any other funding that you may have been rewarded.
I really wanted to go into the pre-vet program because I have wanted to be a vet ever since I was three years old. Around where I live there are only two universities that offer this program and the University of Prince Edward Island was my dream university. I put all of my faith into this one school and during my grade 12 year when it was time to start applying to different schools I only applied to one.
