Is Carleton University good for Indian students?
Indian students looking for an affordable study option to complete their higher studies in Canada can choose Carleton University. The university is located in the capital of Canada (Ottawa), which means students can grab better opportunities for internships with NGOs, tech firms and government offices. The university is known for its reputable programs in subjects like engineering, computer science, business and international relations. Carleton has an affordable fee structure compared to top-tier universities like UBC and the University of Toronto. The campus includes student communities. However, students aiming for very high global rankings or elite brand value may prefer more research-intensive Canadian universities.
Table of Comparison
Indian students often compare Carleton University with the University of Ottawa and York University because they fall into a similar category of well-known, mid-to-high-ranked Canadian public universities that offer strong programs at relatively comparable tuition fees. Below is a table of comparison for a better understanding:
| Factor | Carleton University | University of Ottawa | York University |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual Tuition Fees | CAD 21,331.59 – CAD 57,806.12 (INR 14.10 – 38.19 Lakhs) |

COOP1000 preparatory course: It is a mandatory non-credit preparatory course for students in a co-op program. It teaches resume writing, job search strategies, interview skills and workplace professionalism. A co-op work term at Carleton University is a paid, full-time job placement that students complete as part of their degree. Instead of studying that semester, students work with an employer (in government, tech, business, NGOs, etc.) to gain real-world experience related to their program. These work terms usually last 4 months (sometimes longer) and are officially recorded as part of the co-op program.
Students’ Review as per Reddit: Ottawa’s capital city location provides solid internship and job prospects, with alumni placed in reputed companies. However, structured placement support can feel limited for some students beyond career fairs.
Carleton University is a solid option for students planning to study in Canada, especially those interested in practical, career-focused education. Its location in Ottawa offers exposure to government bodies, research centres, and growing job opportunities. The university provides a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs supported by experienced faculty and strong campus facilities. While tuition fees and living costs are moderate, international students should plan their finances carefully due to limited scholarship availability. Overall, Carleton University is well-suited for students seeking quality education, academic flexibility, and long-term career growth.
FAQs
Ques: How does Carleton University’s location influence career exposure for students?
Ans: Being located in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, Carleton University offers students proximity to government institutions, policy organisations, research centres, and private-sector employers. This environment creates strong opportunities for internships, part-time work, and networking, even though formal placement programs may be limited outside career fairs.
Ques: Why is early planning important for students considering Carleton University?
Ans: Early planning helps students manage application timelines, financial requirements, and documentation effectively. Since scholarships are limited and costs can be high, preparing in advance allows students to make informed decisions and avoid last-minute challenges.
Ques: Why should students carefully evaluate program-specific requirements before applying?
Ans: Some programs have additional expectations such as portfolios, work experience, or standardised test scores, making it important for applicants to assess their profile against individual program criteria rather than relying on general eligibility alone.

- Good university
Dislikes
- But not lot of placement opportunities here as there will be career fair
Campus Life
- There are some clubs available for extracurricular activities.
Fees
- 10000 CAD DURING 2018-2019
Likes
- Courses are practical and well structured.
Dislikes
- But all the programs are not designed with CO-OP. Which is bit disappointing.
Campus Life
- Since I was a MASTERS student, I couldn’t enjoy much of a campus life. But as far as I know, CAMPUS life is good. There are plenty of clubs to join and some of the volunteering jobs. It’s overall good.
Fees
- My program tuition fees was approximately $40K.
Overview
A comprehensive list of extracurriculars is required, otherwise the holistic process just consists of your high school GPA. Carleton University offers one of the only Pre-Law programs in Canada, which is what majorly drew me towards it. Along with that, the placements in the fields of psychology and law are quite well-reputed. The city of Ottawa as well, since the Parliament is located there, is what made me choose Carleton due to the plethora of internship opportunities. Till now, my experience at Carleton has been amazing, right from the academic structure of my course, to the approach of the faculty, to the social assimilation.
Campus Life
There are a myriad of clubs associated with a lot of things at the University. Since the campus is huge, there are also a lot of buildings dedicated to the research facilities in every discipline.
Likes
- It is in capital of Canada. Good job opportunities around. The university is well reputed and ranked.
Overview
Overall it was a good experience. Although coming from another country and adjusting is difficult but it was overall a very good experience.
Campus Life
The library is very good. Whole campus has wifi facilities. Lots of spaces to seat around and take a rest in between classes and do group study.
Likes
- I liked the reputation that the college holds with local employers. Employers are always willing to prioritize Carleton students for roles at their companies for Internships as well as permanent roles.
Dislikes
- As I said above, the location of the University is a bit of the problem because the Ottawa region has long and cold winters.
Overview
Scholarship and Program Structure. The co-op option helps to gain some work experience during the degree apart from making some money. The community is nice and supportive as well, with a good amount of resources available for all sorts of problems that one might bump into. I love the course structure and teaching methodologies applied by the faculty, but I dislike the Canadian winters. They're depressing and make you want to skip onto work that's important to hand in within a given time frame.
Campus Life
The campus life is pretty vibrant here. A lot of events, workshops and festivals keep taking place on campus. I've been pretty involved with a lot of clubs on campus which regularly hold engagement events to boost community involvement.
Overview
Carleton University has a separate Data Science Lab and they specialize in Data Science. I can choose courses from either Carleton or Ottawa and thus have the advantage of studying at another branded university. I could shape my master's curriculum. I can study whatever I want. This is what I studied about ML in my Master's. Carleton has an underground tunnel to keep you warm while you go to university in the winter. They have well-knowledgeable faculty. They cover more material and the exams are tougher but you will benefit from learning many things. Carleton is one of the best institutions if you want to tailor your master's to your interests. You have the option of taking courses outside your department. I took two courses outside my department.
Fees
20000 CAD. But I only paid 15000 CAD because I had good grades and completed my masters in 3 terms.
Overview
Carleton University is one of the highly ranked universities in Canada and is located in I capital of Ontario i.e. Ottawa which is one of the best places for international students in terms of Job Opportunities and facilities. Furthermore, the University has its alumni placed in high-ranked companies which is a big plus point to join Carleton.
Fees
20,000 CAD per year
Overview
Location as Ottawa is the Capital of Canada. Lots of job prospects.
Fees
40000 CAD (10000 per semester)
Overview
I learned about this college through word of mouth from older friends who went there. The admission process was very easy (like most other Ontario universities done through OUAC). I applied to three other universities (Toronto, Laurentian, and Windsor). I choose this university because when touring the school I realized how nice the campus was- everything is conveniently together in one campus and there is a very warm sense of community there. The students are kind and the profs care about students. There is always help for anything you are experiencing. Ottawa itself provides the capital city advantage with lots of volunteer and job opportunities as well as delicious restaurants, lots of services, and tourism. I was an A student in grade 12.
Fees
There are many scholarships awarded for students according to grades but they're also many scholarships for students in need or in a tight financial situation as well as international applicants which can be further discussed with financial aid offices located on campus. Tuition is paid by semester and differs for each student
Overview
Least expensive University in the Ottawa area. The only other option is Ottawa University and their tutition is almost a third more expensive. This was the only University I applied to, therefore I did not spend a lot of time or money applying to different schools. I believe that the application price was just over $200.
Fees
The tuition is very affordable at Carleton and there are lots of opportunities for bursaries and scholarships. There is often an entrance scholarship for most students and more based on your GPA. I used OSAP and my entrance scholarship to pay for my tuition in addition to prior savings. However, changes to OSAP mean that my most recent tuition left me paying $1200 out of my pocket
