Illinois State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Illinois State University sets minimum English proficiency thresholds and expects an Indian bachelor’s degree with a stated GPA equivalent for graduate admission.
PG Requirements for Illinois State University
- Academic: Four-year Indian bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (equivalent to 60% or CGPA 6.0/10) for regular graduate admission; programme-specific minimums may exceed this
- English proficiency (any one): TOEFL iBT 81 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5, PTE Academic 55, Duolingo English Test 110
- Credential verification: Course-by-course WES evaluation is standard practice for Indian transcripts
- GRE or GMAT: Waived for most MS programmes; required for the traditional MBA in certain applicant profiles
UG Requirements for Illinois State University
- Academic: Completion of Indian Class 12 with a strong academic record; competitive admits typically hold Class 12 aggregates of 70% to 85%
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5, PTE Academic 53, or Duolingo 105
Key insight: Illinois State University does not offer an English test waiver for Indian applicants purely on the basis of English-medium instruction. A valid TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo score submitted through the official test provider is mandatory for the F-1 admission file.
Illinois State University Acceptance Rate 2027
Illinois State University reports an 86% acceptance rate for its most recent undergraduate admissions cycle, placing it firmly in the moderately selective band among US public universities. The figure is drawn from the university’s federally-reported IPEDS data and reflects the freshman admissions round.
Graduate admission is programme-driven rather than centralised, so admit rates vary sharply by department. Retention of first-year undergraduates stands at 81.4% and the six-year graduation rate is 64.5%, both consistent with a student body accepted on academic strength rather than test-optional plays.
Reality check: An 86% acceptance rate does not mean automatic admission for Indian applicants. The GPA floor, English test minimum and financial documentation are strict binary filters, and application quality still drives the outcome.

Illinois State University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Illinois State University reports a median salary of USD 50,599 (INR 48.28 lakh) for graduates six years after starting their degree, per federal College Scorecard data.
- Median early-career salary (6 years post-entry): USD 50,599 per year (INR 48.28 lakh)
- Undergraduate retention rate: 81.4% (first-year students returning for year two)
- Undergraduate graduation rate: 64.5% within six years
- Regional employer base: State Farm Insurance (global HQ in Bloomington), Country Financial, COUNTRY Financial, Rivian (electric vehicle manufacturing in Normal), Caterpillar and Archer Daniels Midland
- Post-study work: 12 months of Optional Practical Training for F-1 graduates, with a 24-month STEM extension available for MS Computer Science, MS Information Systems and other DHS-designated STEM programmes
Insider note: ISU’s proximity to State Farm’s global headquarters gives graduate students in analytics, actuarial science and information systems a hiring pipeline that outperforms the university’s overall ranking. Indian STEM graduates often convert an OPT role at State Farm or a Chicago consulting firm into H-1B sponsorship.
Illinois State University vs Peer Universities
Peer benchmarks are drawn from other Illinois and Midwest public universities of comparable enrolment, tuition band and admissions selectivity.
| University | US News National Rank 2026 | Non-Resident PG Tuition (USD/year, est.) | Approx PG Fee (INR lakh, est.) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Illinois State University | #222 | 21,065 | 20.10 lakh | State Farm hiring pipeline, low COL |
| Northern Illinois University | #307 | 18,000 to 22,000 (estimated) | 17.18 to 21.00 lakh | Chicago-metro proximity, engineering focus |
| Southern Illinois University Carbondale | #332 | 19,000 to 23,000 (estimated) | 18.13 to 21.95 lakh | Research-heavy, doctoral extensive |
| Ball State University (Indiana) | #254 | 20,000 to 24,000 (estimated) | 19.08 to 22.90 lakh | Design and telecommunications strength |
| Missouri State University | #307 | 15,000 to 19,000 (estimated) | 14.31 to 18.13 lakh | Cheapest of the peer set |
[Source: US News Best Colleges 2026 edition; peer tuition bands based on published non-resident graduate rates]
Illinois State University stands out in this peer set on two counts: it holds the highest US News rank at #222, and its two-city metro (Bloomington-Normal) hosts more Fortune 500 headquarters than any other Illinois public outside the Chicago metro. This lifts on-campus recruiting depth for insurance, actuarial and analytics roles.
Illinois State University suits Indian applicants who want an ABET-linked or STEM-designated master’s from a moderately selective US public, with total cost of attendance below USD 50,000 per year and a median early-career salary of USD 50,599 that pays back the investment within 12 to 18 months of post-study employment. The 24-month STEM OPT extension available to MS Computer Science and MS Information Systems graduates makes the F-1 to H-1B conversion a realistic three-year pathway from a base in central Illinois.
It is not the right fit for Indian applicants whose ceiling is a top-100 US News research university or a QS top-500 brand. Applicants targeting AI research faculty depth, Ivy-adjacent alumni networks or a Silicon Valley internship pipeline should look instead at Purdue University or the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Overview
ISU is a large school with a small-town feel. Uptown is incredibly safe and comfortable to walk through with charming shops and a lively atmosphere. The quad is beautiful and has every kind of tree native to Illinois. Moreover, at ISU there is something for everyone. It's a very accepting community and I feel very at home here.
Fees
Fees are generally about $1000 a semester with most going towards the athletic department. Other fees help supplement campus improvement, health, and RSO funding. The only place I see not benefiting from the fees are the fine arts which is rather unfortunate.
Overview
This college has a well known and competitive psychology degree. I knew after coming here I would get a great education. I checked out the campus and loved it and the overall environment. Everyone was really friendly and also the vibe was really great!
Fees
The fees are about 1000 a semester but vary depending on how many credits you are taking. Students get many random charges.
Overview
The program I was interested in was one of the best. I talked to many teachers and parents that went to ISU and they all said really great things about the program I was going into and the school itself.
Fees
The only fees I've paid here have been the tuition, housing, club fees and anything additional that I would need.
Overview
The business program was reviewed really well. I wanted to be close to home also because I'm only an hour away. I liked the campus as well and the atmosphere was very welcoming. I liked how it was small but not too small.
Fees
Tuition and books and other parking passes and such are required from the students. It is rather expensive to bring a car to school and even for guests to find parking can be costly. Getting around could be less expensive.
