The Undergraduate International Admissions Scholarship is the single most useful award for Indian freshers. Renewable across four years of study, the total value reaches $20,000 (INR 19.08 Lakhs) if you maintain the 3.0 GPA threshold.
Indian bachelor’s students already enrolled at Illinois State University qualify for a bigger benefit from year two. The International Student Partial Tuition Waiver stacks on top of the Admissions Scholarship, cutting tuition by up to $10,000 (INR 9.54 Lakhs) annually. Combined with the base $5,000 scholarship, total relief reaches $15,000 (INR 14.31 Lakhs) per year from sophomore year onwards.
Illinois State University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Assistantships are awarded by individual departments, so contact your programme coordinator early.
Reddit Insight: Indian MS students at Illinois State University report Computer Science and Information Systems departments fund 30-50 percent of international cohorts through graduate assistantships. Emailing the graduate coordinator before the priority deadline improves the odds noticeably.
Indian applicants targeting the Illinois State University overview should track the assistantship posting boards from October 2026 for Fall 2027 intake. Postings from Accounting, Applied Economics, and Technology also open early.
India-Specific Scholarships at Illinois State University
Illinois State University does not operate any India-only or country-earmarked scholarships. Every institutional award is open to all international applicants, but Indian nationals sit consistently among the top recipient cohorts.
Indian applicants typically qualify for the Admissions Scholarships because CBSE and ISC percentages convert favourably into US GPA terms. The rough conversion pattern that Illinois State University applies is:
- 75 percent aggregate ≈ 3.0 US GPA (UG Admissions Scholarship threshold)
- 85 percent aggregate ≈ 3.5 US GPA (Graduate Admissions Scholarship threshold)
- WES or ECE credential evaluation strengthens borderline GPA equivalency claims
For India-only external funding routes, jump to the External Government Scholarships section covering Fulbright-Nehru, Inlaks, JN Tata and KC Mahindra pathways.
Reddit Insight: Indian applicants at Illinois State University often submit official WES or ECE credential evaluations to strengthen GPA equivalency claims. This lifts borderline 3.4 GPA cases into the 3.5 bracket for the Graduate Admissions Scholarship.
Illinois State University PhD Scholarships
PhD funding at Illinois State University runs almost entirely through Graduate Assistantships and doctoral fellowships. Most admitted doctoral students receive a package covering full tuition and a living stipend.
| Funding Type | Value | INR Equivalent | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doctoral Graduate Assistantship | Full tuition waiver plus $16,000-$22,000/year stipend | INR 15.27-20.99 Lakhs stipend | Admitted PhD applicant, departmental nomination | Rolling; tentative January 15, 2027 for Fall |
| Graduate International Admissions Scholarship | $5,000/year (renewable 2 years) | INR 4.77 Lakhs/year | 3.5+ GPA at PhD admission | Priority: May 1, 2027 (Fall 2027) |
| Dissertation Completion Fellowship | One semester stipend plus tuition | INR 5-8 Lakhs approximate | ABD status, final-year doctoral candidate | Tentative February 15, 2027 |
Full PhD funding at Illinois State University requires early conversation with a prospective faculty advisor. Indian doctoral applicants who secure faculty interest before the priority window close their offer letters with tuition waiver plus stipend attached.
Combining the $5,000 Admissions Scholarship with a doctoral assistantship pushes total annual support past $25,000 (INR 23.86 Lakhs) in tuition-plus-stipend value. Review the Illinois State University admissions page for PhD document requirements and TOEFL cutoffs.

The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship is the most prestigious route for Indians heading to Illinois State University. It covers tuition, monthly stipend, health insurance and round-trip airfare. The catch is a mandatory two-year return-to-India clause after programme completion.
Self-funded PG candidates who miss Fulbright can turn to the JN Tata Endowment, which offers interest-free loans worth up to INR 10 Lakhs. Repayment starts only after graduation, functionally acting like a scholarship for those who service it on time.

Most of the financial aid is automatic when you file your FAFSA. In my experience, ISU is the most generous when it comes to financial aid and is likely the most affordable university in Illinois. I also applied to an art scholarship by entering the annual student art show and won a small award. There were over 30 given that night with many going to my friends.
ISU is a large school with a small-town feel. Uptown is incredibly safe and comfortable to walk through with charming shops and a lively atmosphere. The quad is beautiful and has every kind of tree native to Illinois. Moreover, at ISU there is something for everyone. It's a very accepting community and I feel very at home here.
This college has a well known and competitive psychology degree. I knew after coming here I would get a great education. I checked out the campus and loved it and the overall environment. Everyone was really friendly and also the vibe was really great!
Scholarship
I have both scholarships and financial aid. You can apply for financial aid through the FAFSA website, it's very simple. Most schools post scholarship opportunities that you can apply for or you can research them on your own.
The program I was interested in was one of the best. I talked to many teachers and parents that went to ISU and they all said really great things about the program I was going into and the school itself.
Scholarship
I have one scholarship that was given to me from the university for my ACT score of over 23. I receive a discount on my tuition of $2000 but must keep my GPA above a 3.5 to keep my scholarship. I have received no financial aid for this, or any previous, semesters.
The business program was reviewed really well. I wanted to be close to home also because I'm only an hour away. I liked the campus as well and the atmosphere was very welcoming. I liked how it was small but not too small.
