University of California, Los Angeles Eligibility for Indian Students
UCLA sets academic thresholds by level, with graduate divisions holding to a Bachelor’s GPA of 3.0 (roughly 60% in Indian marks) or better and undergraduate admissions weighing a strong Class XII record against a holistic review. English proficiency is required unless a specific waiver applies, and floors are drawn from the UCLA graduate English requirements page and the international admissions guide.
Undergraduate applicants need a completed Class XII record without prior university enrolment. Admitted first-years typically show top-decile board results, and UCLA holistically weighs subject spread across English, mathematics, science, history, and a foreign language studied through Class XII.
- Class XII completion: no prior Bachelor’s degree; strong board results across core subjects.
- Subject spread: English, mathematics, science, and history through Class XII.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100+, IELTS 7.5+, or Duolingo 135+.
Graduate applicants need a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum overall average equivalent to a B (GPA 3.0 on 4.0, around 60% Indian marks). Individual departments may require higher GPAs and programme-specific prerequisites in the discipline.
- Bachelor’s minimum: GPA 3.0 on 4.0 for MS; PhD divisions typically require 3.25 or better.
- Prerequisites: discipline-relevant coursework (e.g., MS Materials Science expects a B.S. in Materials Science or a comparable major).
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 87 or IELTS 7.0 overall, both valid for two years from the test date.
- GRE: optional at most engineering programmes; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering still requires it.
University of California, Los Angeles IELTS Waiver for Indians
UCLA does not blanket-waive English tests based on Indian medium-of-instruction. The one accepted graduate waiver applies to applicants who hold a Bachelor’s or higher from an accredited university located in the United States or in another country where English is the sole language of instruction. India does not qualify at country level, so most Indian graduate applicants must sit TOEFL or IELTS. Undergraduate applicants get a lighter path — three years of secondary-level English-medium instruction counts as proof of proficiency.
University of California, Los Angeles PG Programs and Requirements
UCLA offers over 130 graduate programmes across engineering, sciences, humanities, business, and public policy. Indian applicants concentrate in engineering MS tracks and Anderson’s business masters. The table below lists popular PG programmes with their published eligibility and English floors.
Base graduate tuition sits at $33,238 (₹31.69 Lakhs) per year for non-residents per the Registrar. Cost of attendance, per-programme fee differentials, and living costs are covered on the course-wise fees breakdown.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| MS Computer Science | 2 years | Bachelor’s in CS or related field at GPA 3.0+ | TOEFL 87, IELTS 7.0 |
| MS Materials Science and Engineering | 2 years | B.S. in Materials Science or comparable major, GPA 3.0 | TOEFL 87, IELTS 7.0 |
| MS Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering | 2 years | Bachelor’s in ME or AE at GPA 3.0; GRE required | TOEFL 87, IELTS 7.0 |
| MS Bioengineering | 2 years | B.S. in Engineering, Life Science, or Physical Science at GPA 3.0 | TOEFL 87, IELTS 7.0 |
| MS Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering | 2 years | Bachelor’s in Chem Eng or related at GPA 3.2 | TOEFL 87, IELTS 7.0 |
| Master’s in Semiconductor Manufacturing | 1 year | Bachelor’s in Chem Eng or related at GPA 3.2 | TOEFL 87, IELTS 7.0 |

| Full-Time MBA (Anderson) | 2 years | Bachelor’s + typically 2+ years work experience | TOEFL 87, IELTS 7.0 |
Insider note: UCLA’s engineering MS programmes deploy the same admissions committee framework. A Bachelor’s at GPA 3.0 gets you past the filter, but the median admit sits closer to 3.5+ with strong project or research signal from Bachelor’s coursework.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of California, Los Angeles page for your chosen program before applying.

University of California, Los Angeles Anderson MBA Admissions
UCLA Anderson’s Full-Time MBA runs a three-round Fall intake. The programme is a two-year residency at Westwood, with rolling reviews inside each round and a fixed Anderson application portal at anderson.ucla.edu. Round dates and interview policy are drawn from the Anderson admissions requirements page.
Round dates for Fall 2027 entry are Round 1 on 1 October 2026 (decisions 11 December 2026), Round 2 on 6 January 2027 (decisions 26 March 2027), and Round 3 on 7 April 2027 (decisions 14 May 2027). Application fee is $200 (₹19,068), non-refundable.
University of California, Los Angeles MBA GMAT Policy
The GMAT, GMAT Focus, GRE, or Executive Assessment is optional. Admitted students who submit scores averaged 703 GMAT with a middle 80% band of 670 to 750. Most admits carry two or more years of post-Bachelor’s work experience, though early-career profiles are read on essays and academic strength alone. Applicants without test scores must show MBA readiness through the three 250-word essays and documented professional accomplishments.
University of California, Los Angeles MBA Interviews
Interviews are invitation-only after applications reach the admissions committee. They are conducted via Zoom or in-person in Los Angeles, run about 30 minutes, and use a "blind" interviewer who has read the resume but not the full application. Completion of the interview is required to be admitted.
Insider note: Indian applicants should target Round 1 or Round 2. Round 3 sees smaller intake bandwidth and tighter competition given F-1 visa slot planning for a September start.
Detailed placement data, MBA-track funding, and Anderson-specific scholarships live on the funding options for Indian students page.
University of California, Los Angeles PhD Admissions and Funding
UCLA PhD admissions run Fall-only through the same UCLA Graduate Application (apply.grad.ucla.edu), but selectivity, prerequisites, and stipend structure are set at the department level. Application fee is $155 (₹14,778). Most engineering PhDs use a 1 December 2026 deadline; Computer Science closes 15 December 2026, Materials Science 9 December 2026, and Chemical Engineering 31 December 2026.
Most departments hold a 3.25 GPA minimum on the 4.0 scale for PhD entry (roughly 70% Indian marks). Recent Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering admits averaged 3.67, and PhD applicants at Chemical Engineering are held to 3.5 and must identify at least one faculty advisor before applying. GRE remains optional at most departments but is highly encouraged for PhD tracks in Materials Science and Aerospace.
UCLA offers full funding to almost all admitted PhD students in Engineering and Sciences, covering tuition, fees, and a stipend for the standard duration of study. Chemical Engineering explicitly notes that all doctoral candidates receive full support (stipend, tuition, and fees). Master’s applicants do not get equivalent funding as a default. Department-level fellowship pages carry the current-year stipend rate.
Planning note: Faculty pre-contact is strongly weighted for engineering PhD reviews. Reach out with a research statement and CV three to four months before the deadline, particularly at Chemical Engineering where advisor selection precedes application submission.
University of California, Los Angeles Application Process for Indian Students
UCLA runs three separate portals depending on level. Sequence matters, because English test scores, transcripts, and recommendations must reach the portal before the level-specific deadline. Steps below reflect the UCLA Graduate Application flow; undergraduate applicants use the UC Application and MBA applicants use the Anderson portal.
- Start the application: Create an account at apply.grad.ucla.edu for graduate programmes, or on the UC Application for undergraduate entry. The UC Application opened 1 August 2026 and files through 30 November 2026.
- Pay the application fee of $155 (₹14,778) for graduate applicants, $80 (₹7,627) per campus for undergraduate applicants, or $200 (₹19,068) for the Anderson Full-Time MBA. International applicants are not eligible for fee waivers.
- Upload transcripts: unofficial scans of each Bachelor’s marksheet and degree certificate; official copies follow after admission.
- Submit English scores: TOEFL iBT 87 or IELTS 7.0 for graduate; TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.5 for undergraduate. Scores are sent directly from ETS or IELTS.
- Load Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement: two separate essays are required for graduate applicants.
- Trigger recommendation letters: recommenders receive an email link and upload directly. Most engineering programmes require three letters.
- Submit by deadline: most Fall 2027 graduate programmes close 1 December 2026; Anderson MBA Round 1 closes 1 October 2026.
Decisions arrive between February and April 2027 for most graduate programmes. Anderson MBA Round 1 decisions release 11 December 2026, Round 2 by 26 March 2027, and Round 3 by 14 May 2027. Accepted applicants have roughly six weeks to reply, and one-year deferrals are handled case by case at the department level.
University of California, Los Angeles Documents Required for Indian Students
UCLA’s document checklist for Indian applicants is uniform across most levels, with programme-specific add-ons such as portfolios for arts tracks or writing samples for humanities. The list below covers items every Indian applicant should prepare well before the level-specific deadline.
- Valid Indian passport with at least 18 months’ validity from the Fall 2027 start.

University of California, Los Angeles Acceptance Rate and Selectivity
UCLA runs one of the most selective admit funnels among US public research universities, with an overall acceptance rate near 10.8% for Fall 2026 across undergraduate applicants. International admits (including Indian nationals) lifted 29% year-on-year for Fall 2026, per UC Office of the President data released 29 July 2026. UCLA sits at #11 in US News Best Global Universities 2026-27, and its detailed ranking band reflects this selectivity.
University of California, Los Angeles UG Selectivity
Undergraduate international selectivity typically runs 3 to 5 percentage points tighter than the overall rate, given fixed non-resident enrolment caps across UC campuses. Indian applicants compete inside the international pool, which sat at just under 10% of the admitted class through Fall 2026. Strong Class XII grades above 90% plus IELTS 7.5+ are the practical floor for a competitive read.
University of California, Los Angeles Grad Acceptance
Graduate-level rates are not published as institution-wide figures. Engineering MS admit rates typically run in the 15% to 30% band, estimated from department cohort sizes and applicant volumes; Anderson Full-Time MBA runs closer to 25% to 30%. UCLA does not publish an official institutional MS or PhD acceptance rate.
Insider note: UCLA reads applications holistically. A 3.2 GPA with strong research and clear-fit essays can beat a 3.8 GPA with generic essays. Signal fit, not just numbers.
USA F-1 Student Visa Process for University of California, Los Angeles Admits
Admitted Indian students at UCLA apply for the F-1 student visa, the standard non-immigrant category for full-time academic study in the US. UCLA’s Dashew Center issues the Form I-20 after admission and receipt of financial documentation, which triggers the visa application.
Steps include paying the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 (₹33,369), completing the DS-160 form, paying the MRV visa fee of $185 (₹17,638), booking a biometric plus visa interview slot at the Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad US consulate, and carrying the I-20, financial proof (12 months of tuition plus living costs), academic records, and English test scores to the interview. See the full US student visa guide for the detailed flow.
2026 update: US consulate slot availability in India tightened through 2026. Book the visa interview immediately after the I-20 arrives, since May to July slots hit capacity by early April in each of the last two cycles.
Tips and Application Checklist for University of California, Los Angeles Admits
The following tips and steps draw from Indian-applicant patterns at UCLA over recent cycles. Combine the timeline actions with the substantive tips to keep the application on schedule and on message.
- Request transcripts 8 weeks before deadline: Indian universities often take four to six weeks for sealed transcripts, so start with a written request to the registrar in early October.
- Book TOEFL or IELTS by mid-August 2026 at the latest, allowing a full retake window before December graduate deadlines.
- Write SOP and Personal Statement in separate passes: the two essays must not duplicate content, with the SOP anchored on research fit and the Personal Statement on background and diversity.
- Contact PhD faculty by September 2026: Chemical Engineering requires advisor selection before application; other departments strongly value it.
- Send recommendation invites 4 weeks before deadline to give recommenders a working buffer.
- Choose the right MBA round: Round 1 (1 October) or Round 2 (6 January) is preferable for Indian applicants, avoiding Round 3 given F-1 visa slot pressure.
- Track financial documentation early: the I-20 requires proof of one year’s tuition plus around $25,000 (₹23.83 Lakhs) in liquid funds, and bank confirmations can take 10 to 14 days.
- Confirm each department’s deadline separately: MS Computer Science, Materials Science, and Chemical Engineering fall outside the 1 December default.
The UCLA admissions cycle rewards early, precise preparation over last-week finishes. Applicants who lock English scores by September 2026 and complete their essays in October generally file cleanly by the 1 December graduate deadline.
University of California, Los Angeles admits Indian applicants through three distinct portals with a hard Fall focus, tight GPA and English floors, and a fee stack running $80 to $200 by level. Timing the application 12 months ahead and clearing IELTS by September materially raises the odds of a clean submission.

I've learnt a lot academically, practically and morally. At first it was difficult to adjust to the western system but the friends I had and the staff made it easy for me to get so used to the system.
Overview
UCLA is the number 1 public university in the United States. It has a beautiful campus with an extremely diverse faculty and student body. The university's location in California is a great bonus for students like me hoping to start a career in tech due to its proximity to the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. The university has a vast, well-connected alumni network and provides tremendous opportunities to learn and grow via clubs, events, and career growth opportunities. The campus community is also as incredibly warm and welcoming as the weather in Los Angeles. I could not recommend UCLA highly enough.

I got to know about this college because I live in the same state, and it's very well known to everyone. the admission process wasn't too difficult because I just had to fill out the UC applications and include my grades, extracurriculars, and supporting essays. the application fee was $80 for this particular campus, and I applied to 6 colleges including this one. I chose to go here because I love the environment, location, and overall happiness of the campus as well as its good reputation. my academic background was good because I was in the top 10% of my graduating class, graduated with highest honors, and had extracurriculars and volunteer experience.

I qualified for an academic scholarship, but in a true egalitarian move, I demurred due to an extremely lucrative part-time job.
