University of Alabama, Birmingham Eligibility for Indian Students
UAB uses an access-oriented model — it admits most applicants who meet its stated academic and English thresholds — with a common floor across the graduate school and layered program-specific criteria on top. Dates and floors below are from the UAB Graduate Admissions international applicants page. See PG Programs for course-wise floors.
UAB Academic Eligibility Floors
- UG general entry: Class XII from a recognised Indian board at roughly 65 percent, an equivalent of a US 3.0 GPA in the last four years of school.
- PG direct entry: 4-year Indian bachelor’s at 60 to 65 percent aggregate (US 3.0 GPA equivalent) with course-by-course credential evaluation by WES, ECE, or UAB’s in-house service.
- 3-year Indian bachelor’s: reviewed program-by-program; competitive programs strongly prefer a 4-year degree or an Indian master’s added on top.
- MS Biomedical Engineering and other STEM PG: typically expect 3.5 GPA (~75 percent) plus a bachelor’s in engineering, physical sciences, life sciences, or mathematics.
UAB English Test Minimums for Indian Applicants
UAB publishes minimum scores across every accepted English proficiency test — the number below is the graduate-school floor; several programs set higher bars.
| English Test | UAB Graduate Minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 80 (or MyBest Score 80) | Institution code 1856; PhD in Biomedical Engineering asks 90. |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall | One Skill Retake results accepted. |

| TOEFL Essentials | 8.5 | Accepted alongside iBT. |
UAB English Test Waivers for Indian Students
UAB does not publish a medium-of-instruction waiver for applicants coming from Indian universities where English is the language of instruction. India is not on UAB’s list of exempt English-native countries. The single available route is completing a US bachelor’s or higher at 3.0+ GPA — relevant only to Indian passport-holders who studied undergrad in the US. Every other Indian applicant must submit a valid TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, or TOEFL Essentials score within two years of applying.

University of Alabama, Birmingham UG Admissions
UAB’s undergraduate route is open to Indian Class XII completers and is genuinely accessible — its holistic review considers academic record, essay, and optional test scores together rather than gate-keeping on a single number. UAB is test-flexible: SAT or ACT is not mandatory for freshman admission, though scores strengthen scholarship review.
UAB Bachelor’s Eligibility for Indian Students
- Class XII from a recognised Indian board: 65 to 70 percent (~US 3.0 GPA), with subject prerequisites for the intended major.
- English: TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120, or PTE 56 unless a waiver applies.
- SAT or ACT: optional for freshman entry; recommended for merit scholarship consideration.
- Financial affidavit covering one year of tuition plus living for the I-20.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| BS Computer Science | 4 years | Class XII at 65 percent with Mathematics studied through Class XII | TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.5 |

Applicants without a matching subject background can apply through UAB’s Undergraduate Pathway Program, which layers intensive English and academic-skills coursework alongside first-year credits.
University of Alabama, Birmingham MBA Admissions
The Collat School of Business runs a full-time MBA and an online MBA, both open to Indian applicants and delivered without a mandatory GMAT or GRE. Rolling admission runs across two intakes; the Fall route is the primary one, with cohorts starting in August 2027. Base MBA tuition is $1,088 per credit hour (about ₹1.03 Lakhs) for both online and in-person tracks, per the official Collat School of Business graduate admissions page.
UAB MBA Deadlines and Rounds
| Intake | International Deadline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 (August start, primary) | 15 July 2027 | International applicants advised to apply 6 months earlier for I-20 processing. |
| Spring 2027 (January start) | 1 December 2026 | Limited seats; earlier submission preferred. |
UAB MBA Eligibility and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited or foreign-equivalent institution.
- Cumulative undergrad GPA of 3.0 (~65 percent) minimum.
- GMAT or GRE: not required; a GMAT score of 500+ can strengthen weaker files.
- Work experience: not mandatory, though 3 to 5 years of continuous professional experience is preferred.
- Test waiver: automatic for applicants with 3 to 5 years of professional work experience or a completed master’s or terminal degree.
Insider note: Indian applicants with three to five years of tech, banking, or healthcare-industry experience skip GMAT prep entirely under Collat’s work-experience waiver, so time-to-application drops from 4 months to under 6 weeks.
University of Alabama, Birmingham PhD Admissions Pathway
UAB is a Carnegie R1 research university, and PhD applicants are evaluated by department faculty rather than a central committee. Funding — tuition remission plus a stipend — is offered to nearly all admitted PhD students in research-heavy programs such as biomedical engineering, biomedical sciences, computer science, and public health, per each department’s admissions page.
UAB PhD Application Steps
- Identify a faculty advisor whose research aligns with your interests before applying — most STEM PhD programs prioritise applicants with faculty-side buy-in.
- Submit the UAB Graduate Online Application with statement of purpose, three LORs from academic referees, CV, and transcripts.
- English scores: most PhD programs require TOEFL 90 (higher than the master’s floor); some also require IELTS 7.0.
- Interviews are common in biomedical, engineering, and public health tracks, held on Zoom for international applicants.
UAB PhD Funding for International Students
Admitted PhD students in most research programs receive a full tuition waiver plus a Graduate Research Assistantship or Teaching Assistantship stipend. The stipend range typically covers cost-of-living in Birmingham and health insurance; exact figures are confirmed in the offer letter and vary by school and academic year.
2026 update: The MSBME priority window for funding-considered Fall 2027 applicants closes 30 November 2026, with a final cut-off of 31 December 2026. File after 30 November and you remain admissible but drop out of first-round funding review.
University of Alabama, Birmingham Application Process
UAB uses a single online portal for graduate and undergraduate applications — the UAB Graduate Online Application at cloud.reach.uab.edu (grad) and the UAB Undergraduate Application (freshman and transfer). There is no Common Application route for UAB; every applicant applies directly to the university.
- Create an account on the UAB Graduate Online Application portal (or the UAB Undergraduate Application for freshman entry). Save credentials — you re-use them for reference-request forms.
- Choose your target program, intake, and level. UAB permits one active application per student per term.
- Upload unofficial transcripts, statement of purpose (500 to 1,000 words), CV, and 2 to 3 LORs; the system emails referees directly.
- Send official TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo scores from the testing agency (TOEFL institution code 1856).
- Pay the $60 (around ₹5,670) application fee by credit card at the end of the form on the UAB Graduate Online Application portal — the application is not reviewed until the fee posts.
- Submit the application. Track status in the portal — official transcripts, credential evaluations, and financial affidavits can be uploaded post-submission until the department requests them.
UAB Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline
Decisions are released on a rolling basis, typically 4 to 10 weeks after all documents post. Offers ship as conditional or unconditional; a conditional offer becomes final once the final degree transcript and English score arrive. Admitted students accept via the portal, upload the Financial Affidavit and passport bio page, and receive the I-20 within 2 to 4 weeks — the trigger for the F-1 visa application.
University of Alabama, Birmingham Documents Required
UAB expects a compact but strictly formatted document set — unofficial versions can be uploaded to start review, but the I-20 will not release until every official document sits on file. Prepare the list below before opening the application.
- Valid passport — bio page scan, with at least six months validity beyond the intended entry date.
- Official transcripts in original language plus a certified English translation, sent directly by the issuing university.
- Degree certificate or degree-conferral statement with the university’s official stamp.
- Credential evaluation — course-by-course report from UAB’s in-house service ($100), WES, or another NACES-member evaluator.
- English proficiency score report sent directly by ETS, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo.
- Standardised test score (GRE or GMAT) only if required by the target program — most UAB masters programs do not require it.
- Statement of purpose (500 to 1,000 words) tailored to the program and faculty.
- Curriculum vitae or resume listing academics, research, publications, and work experience.
- Two to three letters of recommendation — MSN and PhD applicants need three, from academic or supervisory referees.
- Financial Affidavit of Support plus bank statement covering the first year’s tuition and living expenses.
- Passport-style photograph if requested by the target school.
University of Alabama, Birmingham Acceptance Rate
UAB reports an undergraduate acceptance rate of roughly 80 percent in its most recent Common Data Set, which places it in the accessible tier of US public research universities. Graduate admit rates vary by program — the standard master’s direct-entry route mirrors that accessibility, while the MS in Biomedical Engineering, School of Nursing MSN specialties, and PhD programs run considerably tighter cohorts.
UAB Admission Rate by Level
- Undergraduate: ~80 percent overall — Class XII at 65 to 70 percent plus adequate English scores is competitive on the standard track.
- Masters (direct entry): estimated 55 to 70 percent for the standard graduate school route, based on holistic-review patterns at UAB — the university does not publish an official institutional figure.
- MS Biomedical Engineering and STEM PhDs: estimated 15 to 30 percent, based on cohort-size caps in research-heavy tracks with funding tied to admission.
- MSN Nursing: estimated 30 to 50 percent depending on specialty — Family Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Anesthesia are the most selective.
What Strengthens an Indian Application at UAB
Beyond the numeric floors, UAB reviewers weigh research or industry experience, alignment between the SOP and a specific faculty group, publications or repository-linked project work for STEM applicants, and prior US or international academic exposure. See UAB’s ranking band across QS, ARWU, and US News for the comparative research-intensity context.
Insider note: An Indian applicant sitting at 62 percent bachelor’s with a research paper, industry experience, and a strong faculty-matched SOP has repeatedly cleared UAB masters admissions where a 78 percent generic file has stalled — the university reviews genuinely holistically.
USA F-1 Student Visa for University of Alabama, Birmingham
Once you accept UAB’s offer and upload the Financial Affidavit of Support and passport bio page, UAB issues the Form I-20 — the document the US embassy needs to grant the F-1 student visa. Indian applicants pay the SEVIS I-901 fee ($350, about ₹33,075), complete the DS-160 form online, book a visa slot at a US embassy or consulate in India, and attend the interview typically 4 to 6 weeks before the semester start. Full step-by-step context on document preparation, financial proof, and interview readiness is on CD’s F-1 student visa guide for Indian students.
The visa interview covers three anchors: academic intent (why UAB, why this program), financial capacity (a year of tuition plus $18,000 to $22,000 in living costs demonstrated), and non-immigrant intent. After entry, Indian students report to UAB’s Office of Global Engagement within 30 days for check-in and SEVIS activation. UAB’s programs in STEM CIP codes — MSCS, MSDS, MSBME, most engineering — qualify for the 12-month OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension, giving 36 months of post-study work authorisation.
Planning note: Book the F-1 interview at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata as soon as you receive the I-20 — Indian consulate slots for the summer travel window fill fast, and delayed appointments are the single biggest cause of Fall-intake deferrals.
Tips and Application Checklist for University of Alabama, Birmingham
The steps and tips below are drawn from Indian applicant patterns at UAB across the last three admission cycles, focused on sequencing rather than repeating the document set already listed above. Full US living-cost planning is on CD’s US cost of living for international students.
UAB Application Tips
- Match a faculty group in the SOP — name two professors and one lab or project relevant to your background; UAB reviewers weigh fit heavily.
- Request WES or ECE evaluation early — the process takes 4 to 6 weeks, and UAB will not admit without a course-by-course report.
- Apply by the priority window — for MSBME this is 30 November 2026 for Fall 2027 funding; applying later still allows admission but not first-round funding.
- Use IELTS Academic OneSkill Retake if only one band is short — UAB accepts the updated composite score.
UAB Admissions Checklist
- 10 to 12 months out: lock TOEFL or IELTS, request WES evaluation, shortlist faculty.
- 8 weeks before deadline: request LORs, finalise SOP, request official transcripts from your Indian university.
- 4 weeks before deadline: submit the application and pay the $60 (around ₹5,670) fee.
- Post-offer: upload financial affidavit, receive I-20, pay SEVIS fee, book F-1 interview 4 to 6 weeks before semester start.
UAB admissions reward early, targeted applicants who match faculty groups and clear documentation gates on the first pass, so the Fall 2027 window rewards Indian students who lock English tests and credential evaluation before the December 2026 priority round for funded programs.
University of Alabama, Birmingham Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the application fee for Indian students applying to UAB?
Ans. UAB charges a $60 (around ₹5,670) application fee for both graduate and undergraduate international applicants. A handful of professional programs charge more, and the fee is paid on the UAB Graduate Online Application portal at the end of the form.
Ques. Does UAB accept a 3-year Indian bachelor’s degree for master’s admission?
Ans. UAB reviews 3-year bachelor’s degrees case by case. Competitive programs like MSCS, MSDS, and MSBME strongly prefer a 4-year degree or a 3-year bachelor’s plus an Indian master’s. The final call sits with each department after the WES evaluation.
Ques. Is the GRE required for UAB master’s programs?
Ans. Most UAB master’s programs, including MSCS, MSDS, MBA, and MAc, do not require the GRE or GMAT. The MSN in Nursing requires the GRE for international applicants, and MSBME accepts but does not require GRE scores.
Ques. Does UAB offer an IELTS or TOEFL waiver for Indian students?
Ans. UAB does not offer a medium-of-instruction waiver for Indian applicants. The only English test waiver applies to those who have completed a US bachelor’s degree at 3.0+ GPA. Every other Indian applicant must submit a valid TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.5, PTE 56, or Duolingo 120.
Ques. What is UAB’s primary intake for Indian students?
Ans. Fall (August) is UAB’s primary intake, where the widest set of programs open. Spring (January) is available for a narrower list, and Summer is limited to specific programs. The next Fall deadline is 1 August 2027 for most graduate programs.
Ques. How long does UAB take to release an admission decision?
Ans. Decisions release on a rolling basis, typically 4 to 10 weeks after all documents post. Complete files reviewed earlier in the cycle usually hear back faster than those submitted close to the deadline.
Ques. Can Indian applicants get funding for a UAB master’s degree?
Ans. Master’s funding at UAB is limited to Graduate Assistantships awarded by individual departments after admission and to merit scholarships considered at application. PhD programs, in contrast, fund nearly all admitted international students with a tuition waiver plus stipend.
Ques. Does UAB accept the Common Application?
Ans. No. UAB uses its own undergraduate application system and the UAB Graduate Online Application for master’s and doctoral applicants. There is no Common App route for either level.
Ques. What is the acceptance rate for the UAB Collat MBA for Indian applicants?
Ans. UAB does not publish a separate Collat MBA acceptance rate for international students. The program admits without a required GMAT or GRE and waives standardised tests entirely for applicants with 3 to 5 years of continuous professional experience or a completed master’s degree.
Ques. Is UAB good for Indian students pursuing STEM master’s degrees?
Ans. Yes. UAB’s MSCS, MSDS, and MSBME programs qualify for STEM OPT, giving Indian students up to 36 months of post-study work authorisation in the US. UAB also carries an ARWU 301-400 global rank and QS 951-1000 (2027), with a Carnegie R1 research designation.
Ques. What is the F-1 visa financial proof requirement for UAB?
Ans. UAB expects an affidavit covering one full academic year — tuition plus living expenses. For a standard graduate program, that is approximately $40,000 to $65,000 (₹37.80 Lakhs to ₹61.42 Lakhs) shown as liquid funds in a bank statement dated within the last six months.
Ques. Can I apply to more than one UAB program at once?
Ans. UAB allows one active graduate application per term. If you want to be considered for a second program, you must contact the Graduate School to switch or wait until the next admission cycle to apply to a different track.

They were so personal and helpful to me during the admissions process. I can tell they care about me and my success as a student. My advisor is wonderful and always so excited about where I'm going with my life.
Scholarship
I have received a scholarship that brings me down to in-state tuition levels but that is all. The process was really easy, as I was automatically offered the scholarship solely based on my test scores. There is also a single application to fill out that enrols you for consideration to all scholarships available.

They have one of the best nursing schools and a great medical reputation. They provide lots of opportunities for research. UAB is very diverse and welcoming to every student that comes there. It feels like a home away from home!
Scholarship
I received some financial aid from FAFSA and some from academic scholarships through the school. It adds up to less than $10,000 so I still pay a lot out of pocket.

Football school looked fun on tv good scholarships are given big Greek life presence on campus a plethora of options for majors and minors. Research and shadowing opportunities were plentiful. A huge quad and all the buildings are in walking distance of each other.

This college is close to my home and it offered a great scholarship package. I want to practice law in Alabama, so it made sense to attend here. I went to a large university, so having a large university feel with the smaller law school community appealed to me.
