Dislikes
- Teaching method of few professor is not understandable or not very representable
- International and local differences among the students
- Strict rules and regulations
Course Curriculum
- Course curriculum is intermediate level; you get time to do hands-on work and self-learning. If you are loyal with studies, a 4 GPA is easy to get.
- The curriculum is more practically focused, which helps to learn the subject in depth.
- The professors make sure that each and every student gets individual attention, and all the labs, assignments, and in-class activities help to make it more understandable than just PowerPoints and theoretical.
Admission Experience
-
I had applied to the following universities:
- Purdue University West Lafayette - Admitted
- Purdue University Fort Wayne - Admitted
- Purdue University Northwest - Admitted
- University of Southern California - Admitted
- Georgia Tech - Admitted
- TAMU - Rejected
- Michigan State University - Waitlisted
- Arizona State University - Admitted
- I was waitlisted for Michigan State University and later I got an admit but that was too late
- TAMU rejected me the reason was that I did not meet the course criteria I was applying for. I applied for Cybersecurity program and my past education was in software engineering technology and management.
- I chose this college because of all the factors I had in mind: the fees, the university course they offered, the weather, the university ranking, and the area. It fit in my checklist and that is why I chose this university.
- The admission process was pretty simple; after GRE, TOEFL or IELTS examination apply for the required course or program you want. we have three universities: the main campus, Wayne, and Northwest. I chose Northwest, but I was later admitted to all other campuses too. And after applying, once you get an email about the decision, all the next steps are properly explained. Most of the job is done by the international department of administration but we need to provide them with all the list of documents they ask us for. They also have good housing available or you can also choose to stay off campus.
- The university accepts IELTS, GRE and TOEFL. I personally gave GRE and TOEFL. The minimum required score is for GRE - Verbal 146, quantitative 144, and analytical 4.0. (but GRE is also optional but highly recommended) for TOEFL - 80 overall, with minimum bands of 19 for reading, 18 for speaking, and 14 for listening.
- Overall, the admission experience, or even after completing my 3rd semester, the experience is really good. The staff members are really helpful and cooperative. The transition was quite smooth for me. And I would love to get in touch with students who have personal doubts because here I talked very generically. Students or anyone can reach out to me on LinkedIn.
- I applied for the fall 2023 intake and I graduated in May 2023 so I immediately applied for a master's degree.
- I started my application in August 2022 after I had my GRE and TOEFL and submitted my application in December 2022 and all the process was completed till April 2023. I got the decision in mid-February. Rest dependents on the visa process. I arrived in the USA in August 2023.
Class Schedule
- Only one class in a day at max 2 classes and scheduled so students never get stressed. Also, the timings are 10 am or 6 p.m. in the evening.
- Each class is 3 hours and if its a lab, then 2 hours.
- Average students in class are 30 at max and Indian students are comparatively more in the class.
Faculty
- The faculty ratio is pretty good, making sure each student gets individual attention.
- The teaching method is also practical-orientated, having in-class activities and assignments rather than the professor talking for 3 hours straight.
- Yes, if the student has the potential, the faculty make sure they support at their best to help the student secure a job.
- There is not one faculty member I admire, because each and every member I came in contact with was very humble, helpful, and made sure they helped me figure out things or guide me at the best.
Campus Life
- We have 3 campuses. The Purdue West Lafayette, Purdue Fort Wayne and Purdue Northwest University.
- All the above mentioned facilities are available in all the campuses libraries are huge and available all the time. Sports plus on campus gym and dedicated medical area for services.
- There are many technical flagship events and all global festivals are celebrated in the university every year.
Part Time Jobs
-
Many students usually get an assistantship in the second semester. I tried hard and got it in the first semester itself.
The pay range is $11 to $15. At the library, gym, and pantry. Maximum hours allowed are 20 hours legally per week. - Getting a TA/RA/GA is tough but other than that, this is pretty easy. With continued follow-up, one can secure an on-campus job.
- Not all prefer working part time but those who do get a good amount monthly to pay rent and groceries. It is not very difficult to secure a part-time job; only consistent effort is the key. Usually the career centre is the go-to for searching jobs or getting your resume and meeting the person personally can get you a job pretty easily. Portal applications take time at times due to the huge number of candidates.
Placement
- There are 80% chances one secure a job within 6 months after graduating from the university. Again consistency is the key. If one does not put efforts we cannot blame other for not having a job.
- Average salary is $50k to $80k annually most students get after graduating depending on the job role they opt for.
- Students usually prefer LinkedIn. Glassdoor and other such platforms to secure jobs or referrals.
Accommodation
- I opted for off campus since I had my friends staying off campus and also off campus is cheaper than on campus stays. But on campus is very safe.
- I found the accommodation with the help of my friends and there is also an Indian association solely helping the Indian international students.
- It was smooth finding the accommodation.
- For future students, I can definitely help them or help them reach out to students who can help them.
My accommodation is 8 minutes walkable distance from the university. Most of the students stay in community apartments near the college or independent housing, which is also a good option.
Exams
- So, GRE and TOEFL or IELTS is required but depending on the course GRE is optional. For my course GRE is optional but if one has GRE the acceptance rate is good. TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo any one is necessary. I preferred TOEFL as many of the Universities in USA requires TOEFL and in European universities, IELTS is required.
- Documents likes Statement of Purpose, Letter of Recommendation, Cover letter, Transcripts, Marksheets, CV or Resume and loan documents if applicable.
Fees
- Each course is worth 3 credits and each course is approximately $3000. The minimum credits for international students are 9 credits only student with assistantship can have a minimum of 6 credits each semester.
- The fee charged is semesterly based on the credits you have registered plus exam fees, library fees, and resources.
- Monthly $500 to $600; rent approx. $400 off campus and on campus is $600. Food and grocery $200 per month is enough.
Scholarship
- There is no such particular scholarship available for the course but there are multiple scholarships available overall for the students, which are available on the website.
- One can have an assistantship like graduate help or be a TA (teaching assistantship) or RA (research assistantship) and can also be a grader.
- TA, RA, and GA get fee remissions up to 90% of the fees each semester. I was able to get TA in the first semester itself, but one needs to try really hard because there are a lot of candidates. I applied for 120 applications and got 3 interviews for the TA and grader positions, and I was able to grab one.
