Duke University admissions run through the Common App for first-year undergraduates and through The Graduate School portal for master’s and PhD candidates, with a strong Class XII record required at the undergraduate level and a four-year bachelor’s degree required for most postgraduate programs.

  • Next live deadline (primary intake): Regular Decision Fall 2027 closes January 4, 2027 for first-year undergraduates.
  • Base tuition + application fee: Base undergraduate tuition is USD 76,375 (around INR 72.86 Lakhs) per year, with an application fee of USD 85 (around INR 8,109) for undergraduates and USD 105 (around INR 10,017) for The Graduate School.
  • Eligibility floor: UG needs Class XII with a top academic record (admits typically hold 90 percent-plus); PG needs a four-year bachelor’s degree with strong GPA, plus IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 90 for graduate applicants.
  • Undergraduate acceptance rate: around 4.8 percent for the Class of 2029 (Duke’s most recently published class profile).

Popular programs among Indian applicants at Duke University include Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, and the Master of Interdisciplinary Data Science (MIDS), with Indian graduate students citing faculty access at Trinity College and the collaborative culture at Fuqua as decisive factors when choosing between US private research universities.

Admission Status: Open. Fall 2027 (primary intake) is Duke University’s main entry point for Indian applicants. First-year undergraduate applications open through the Common App with Early Decision closing November 2, 2026 and Regular Decision closing January 4, 2027. The Graduate School application opens in August 2026 for Fall 2027 entry. Application fee is USD 85 (around INR 8,109) for undergraduates and USD 105 (around INR 10,017) for The Graduate School.

Duke University Eligibility Requirements for Indian Students

Duke University does not publish a single fixed cut-off. Undergraduate admits typically hold Class XII scores of 90 percent-plus from CBSE, ISC, or IB, per Duke’s holistic review approach. Postgraduate admits need a four-year bachelor’s degree with strong GPA and any program-specific prerequisites.

Duke University Undergraduate Academic Eligibility

  • Class XII record: Strong performance across five core subjects, admits typically at 90 percent-plus.
  • Subject prerequisites: Mathematics through Class XII for engineering or quantitative majors at Pratt School.
  • SAT or ACT: Test-optional for the 2026-27 cycle.
  • Financial aid basis: Need-aware for international applicants, but Duke meets 100 percent of demonstrated need once admitted.

Duke University Postgraduate Academic Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s degree: A four-year bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution. Indian three-year bachelor’s degrees may need a WES or ECE equivalency evaluation.
  • GRE or GMAT: Program-specific. Many STEM and social science programs are GRE-optional. Fuqua MBA requires GMAT, GRE, or Executive Assessment (no waivers).
  • GPA floor: No universal minimum. Competitive candidates carry a 3.0-plus on the US four-point scale (around 75 percent-plus Indian equivalent).

Duke University English Language Requirements

The Graduate School requires proof of English proficiency if English is not your first language. Accepted tests and minimums:

  • TOEFL iBT: 90
  • TOEFL Paper-based: 577
  • IELTS Academic: 7.0
  • Duolingo English Test: 125

Undergraduate applicants are not required to submit an English test, but Duke recommends submitting one (TOEFL iBT around 100 or IELTS 7.5 is common among admitted internationals). Scores must be no more than two years old from 01 August of the application year.

Duke University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

The Graduate School will consider an English test waiver only if the applicant has studied full-time for two years or more at a university where the sole language of instruction is English AND in a country where English is the primary spoken language. India is officially bilingual (Hindi and English), and Duke’s language stipulates the country of study, so most Indian applicants coming directly from an Indian bachelor’s programme still need to submit IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo scores. Indian applicants who completed an eligible degree in the UK, Australia, Singapore, or a similar country may qualify.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Duke University Graduate School page for your chosen program before applying.

Duke University Postgraduate Programs and Entry Requirements

Duke University’s postgraduate programs run through The Graduate School, Pratt School of Engineering, Sanford School of Public Policy, Nicholas School of the Environment, and Fuqua School of Business. Base tuition for Graduate School master’s programs sits around USD 66,000 to USD 78,000 (around INR 63 to 74 Lakhs) per year depending on the school, with the exact figure listed in the Duke University fees breakdown by course. Cost of attendance, living costs, and health insurance sit on the fees page.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Duke University Graduate School page for your chosen program before applying.

Duke University Undergraduate Programs and Entry Requirements

Undergraduate education at Duke University runs through Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and the Pratt School of Engineering. Indian applicants apply for a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, or a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. Base tuition sits at USD 76,375 (around INR 72.86 Lakhs) per year, with the tuition-plus-mandatory-fees breakdown documented on the Duke Bursar page.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.
BA at Trinity College (55 majors)4 yearsClass XII at 90 percent-plus with strong humanities or social science recordNot required if instruction in English
BS at Trinity College (natural sciences, math)4 yearsClass XII at 90 percent-plus with Mathematics and lab scienceNot required if instruction in English
BSE at Pratt School (Engineering)4 yearsClass XII at 90 percent-plus, Mathematics and Physics through Class XIINot required if instruction in English
Program II (self-designed BA or BS)4 yearsClass XII at 90 percent-plus plus a formal proposal after first yearNot required if instruction in English

Program II is Duke’s structured pathway where a student designs their own interdisciplinary major (approved by a faculty committee) rather than picking from Trinity or Pratt’s standard majors. First-year applicants apply as Program I candidates and switch to Program II after arrival.

Insider note: Duke University’s undergraduate financial aid is need-aware for international applicants, meaning your ability to pay affects admission chances. Indian families who can demonstrate full-pay capacity hold a modest edge over need-based competitors in the Regular Decision pool.

Duke University Fuqua MBA Admissions for Indian Applicants

The Fuqua School of Business runs Duke University’s Daytime MBA on a four-round schedule for the 2026-2027 cycle. Base tuition for the Daytime MBA runs around USD 82,000 (around INR 78.23 Lakhs) per year, with the full breakdown available in the funding options for Indian students at Fuqua. Fuqua accepts GMAT, GRE, or the Executive Assessment (EA) for the Daytime MBA, and score waivers are not permitted.

Duke University Fuqua MBA Test Scores and Work Experience

The middle 80 percent of admitted Daytime MBA students hold a GMAT range of 680 to 770 and a GRE combined range of 307 to 328. Fuqua enforces no minimum work experience, so early-career Indian applicants with a strong quantitative record and a clear leadership arc are competitive. Interviews are by invitation only, conducted virtually for international candidates, and cover fit, leadership, and career vision.

Planning note: Fuqua strongly recommends Indian and other international applicants target Early Action, Round 1, or Round 2. Round 3 admits face very tight timelines for I-20 issuance and F-1 visa slotting before the August 2027 start.

Duke University PhD Admissions and Funding

Duke University offers fully funded PhD programs across the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, and biomedical fields through The Graduate School. Deadlines cluster in December 2026 to early January 2027 for Fall 2027 entry, per Duke’s Graduate School deadlines page. Application fee is USD 105 (around INR 10,017).

Duke University PhD Steps and Requirements

  1. Identify 2 to 3 faculty whose research aligns with your interests, and reach out with a short introduction 3 to 6 months before the deadline.
  2. Prepare a research-focused Statement of Purpose (SOP), Life Experiences Statement, CV, three Letters of Recommendation (LORs), and transcripts.
  3. Submit GRE scores if the program requires them (many are GRE-optional).
  4. Submit English proficiency scores unless a waiver applies.
  5. Apply through the Duke Graduate School portal by the program’s stated deadline.

Duke University PhD Stipend and Funding

Admitted PhD students receive a full tuition waiver, health insurance, and a living stipend. Duke’s Graduate School minimum PhD stipend for 2025-26 sits around USD 39,300 (around INR 37.49 Lakhs) per twelve months, with individual programs offering more. Confirm the current stipend and any top-ups on the Duke Graduate School funding page.

Reality check: Duke PhD admissions are highly selective, with many programs admitting fewer than 10 percent of applicants. Reach out to prospective advisors early in the cycle, as an existing faculty champion is often decisive for interview shortlisting.

Duke University Application Process for Indian Students

The Duke University application process differs by level. Undergraduates apply through the Common App, Graduate School applicants use the Duke Graduate School portal, and MBA candidates apply through the separate Fuqua portal. Follow these steps.

  1. Create your account: Register on the correct portal (Common App for UG, Duke Graduate School portal for master’s or PhD, or Fuqua portal for MBA).
  2. Complete personal and academic sections: Enter education history, GPA, and any test scores. Indian applicants convert Class XII marks and Bachelor’s percentages to the US GPA scale using WES or ECE.
  3. Upload documents: Transcripts, SOP, essays, CV, and LORs (two teachers plus a counselor for UG; three LORs for The Graduate School).
  4. Send test scores: Official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, GRE, or GMAT scores must be sent directly from the testing agency.
  5. Pay the application fee: USD 85 (around INR 8,109) for undergraduates on the Common App portal, or USD 105 (around INR 10,017) for The Graduate School. Fee waivers are available through the Common App based on financial need.
  6. Submit and track: Submit by the stated 11:59 pm EST deadline (about 09:29 am IST the next day). Track status on your applicant portal.

Duke University Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

Undergraduate Early Decision results are released in mid-December 2026. Regular Decision results are released in late March or early April 2027. Graduate School decisions typically arrive between January and April 2027 for Fall 2027 entry. Fuqua MBA decisions follow round-by-round schedules. Admitted undergraduates must respond by May 1, 2027 (National Reply Day) and pay the enrollment deposit. Duke does not routinely offer one-year deferrals for undergraduates without a compelling reason.

Duke University Documents Required for Indian Applicants

The document list differs by program level. Prepare digital copies (PDF, less than 75 pages each) well before the deadline. Duke University does not accept mailed documents unless specifically requested.

Duke University Undergraduate Documents

  • Passport (biographical page)
  • Class X and Class XII transcripts (official, from your board)
  • Predicted Class XII grades if you are still in school
  • Counsellor recommendation and School Report
  • Two teacher recommendations from major academic subjects
  • Common App personal essay plus Duke-specific supplemental essays
  • Optional SAT or ACT scores (test-optional cycle)
  • Optional Arts supplement for creative applicants
  • CSS Profile plus FAFSA if applying for financial aid

Duke University Postgraduate Documents

  • Passport (biographical page)
  • Bachelor’s degree transcripts and degree certificate
  • WES or ECE credential evaluation (recommended for Indian degrees)
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)
  • Life Experiences Statement
  • CV or Resume
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (LORs)
  • Official GRE or GMAT score report if required by the program
  • Official English proficiency score report (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo)
  • Writing sample or portfolio for humanities, arts, or design programs

Before you apply: Duke University’s Re Vera Services verifies international transcripts. Chinese degrees are verified via CHESICC. Indian applicants should upload officially attested board transcripts and a WES evaluation so verification is not delayed.

Duke University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Duke University’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate for the Class of 2029 was 4.8 percent, based on 58,712 applications and roughly 2,818 admits, per Duke’s most recent published class profile. International students make up around 11 percent of the enrolled undergraduate class.

Duke University Undergraduate Acceptance Rate by Round

Early Decision draws a smaller and self-selecting pool, so ED admit rates hover in the 12 to 15 percent range while Regular Decision rates sit closer to 3 to 4 percent. Applying ED is a binding commitment and remains the strongest strategic lever for Indian candidates who are certain about Duke.

Duke University Graduate and MBA Acceptance Context

Duke does not publish a Graduate-School-wide acceptance rate. Individual master’s programs vary widely, with programs like MS Computer Science and MIDS estimated in the 15 to 25 percent range based on the university’s competitive-intake pattern. Fuqua’s Daytime MBA acceptance rate sits around 20 to 22 percent, per Fuqua’s most recent class profile disclosures.

Insider note: Indian applicants competing in a highly-represented national pool should not read the 4.8 percent headline literally. Duke reviews international candidates against country cohorts, and quantitative-heavy Indian applicants often face steeper competition in STEM majors than in humanities.

USA F-1 Visa Process for Duke University Applicants

Indian students admitted to Duke University enter the USA on an F-1 student visa. After you accept the offer, Duke’s Visa Services issues a Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) that lists the SEVIS ID, program dates, and estimated cost of attendance. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,390) before booking the visa appointment.

Book your F-1 visa interview at a US Embassy or Consulate in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad. The DS-160 form must be completed online, and the visa fee (MRV) is USD 185 (around INR 17,649). Carry the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS fee receipt, passport, admission letter, financial proof covering the first year (bank statements, sponsor affidavits, education loan letters), and academic transcripts to the interview. Duke’s estimated Fall 2027 cost of attendance for undergraduates is around USD 103,000 (around INR 98.26 Lakhs) per year, so plan financial proof accordingly.

2026 update: Consular wait times in India for F-1 interviews can stretch to 8 to 12 weeks in peak May to July 2027. Book your slot as soon as your I-20 arrives, and never book for the final week before Duke’s orientation date.

Tips for Duke University Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Duke University and reflect where earlier candidates gained a real edge.

  • Choose ED strategically: Duke’s ED admit rate is around 3 times the RD rate, so apply ED only if Duke is your top choice and you can commit financially.
  • Show quantitative depth for Pratt or MIDS: Include AP Calculus BC, IB HL Math, or Indian equivalents like JEE Main percentile or advanced Class XII Mathematics.
  • Reach out to PhD advisors early: Faculty champions carry disproportionate weight in Duke PhD shortlisting.
  • Draft your Fuqua essays with the "team fuqua" lens: Fuqua weighs cultural fit heavily, so specific stories about collaboration outshine generic career pitches.
  • Order WES or ECE by October: Waiting until December risks missing a January PG deadline because evaluation queues stack up in the winter.
  • Submit optional SAT if 1500-plus: Duke stays test-optional but strong scores still help Indian STEM applicants stand out.

Duke University Admissions Checklist

The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete on the road to a Duke offer, with timing anchored to a January 2027 deadline.

  • 10 to 12 months out: Shortlist your Duke program and start SOP or essay drafting.
  • 8 months out: Book IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo. Retake if your first score is under 7.0 (IELTS) or 90 (TOEFL).
  • 6 months out: Take GRE or GMAT if required. Request LOR-writers with a one-page brief.
  • 4 months out: Order WES or ECE credential evaluation for Indian transcripts.
  • 2 months out: Complete Common App or Duke Graduate School portal profile. Finalise essays and SOP.
  • Deadline week: Pay the application fee, confirm official test scores are sent, and submit before the 09:29 am IST cutoff.

Duke University admissions reward Indian applicants who plan quantitative rigour and target early rounds. Undergraduates should protect the Early Decision or Regular Decision timeline for Fall 2027, graduate applicants should time WES evaluations to hit the January window, and Fuqua candidates should aim for Round 1 or 2 to secure visa runway.

Scholarship

  • I did not receive a scholarship, and scholarships for Master of Engineering Management programs at Duke University are rare. 5-6 people from my course have a scholarships and they range from 5000-1000 USD.
  • They have no specific eligibility criteria, but a high CGPA, GRE or exceptional profile will get the scholarship. My roommate has a scholarship of 8000 USD.

  • I initially got a 7,000 USD scholarship that I renegotiated to 12,000 USD.
  • Many of my batch mates received similar merit scholarships ranging from 2,000 USD to 20,000 USD. There are no other financial aid options for international students other than the mentioned merit scholarships at Duke Fuqua.
  • I am unaware of the exact number of students who receive the merit scholarship but the typical award amount is around 5,000 USD.

Overview

While I was making a list of colleges that I had to apply to, I found the Fuqua culture really immersive and this is what attracted me to it. I chose this program because I wanted to transition from a pure sciences background to a management background. This will act as a springboard for my future career goals.
