What Students Say
Likes
- Academics/Professors are excellent, they care about teaching and aren't as strict
- I love the housing system, you get to live with the same people throughout
- The post graduate opportunities are so ridiculously good
Dislikes
- The food was very hit or miss on most occasions
- The community can at times be very cliquey
- Greek life is extremely dominant and can be isolating
Colleges Where I Was Accepted
Reason for choosing my college
- I was offered a Full aid package at Duke University whereas I didn't apply for aid at Stanford because the odds of admission drop when you do since its not a need-blind admission process at the University.
Colleges Where I Was Rejected
Reason for Rejection
- If I had to guess, I'd say I didn't get in at these places because my actual grades weren't as high and my main strength was my extracurriculars and essays, plus I need full aid so that might have influenced that too.

Tips to enhance your application
- Make sure that the teachers that you ask for letters of recommendation are those that know you well and will attest to and add on to your application in a meaningful way. Even if it's optional, standardised testing for internationals, especially in CBSE, is IMPORTANT.
Admission Experience
- The main reasons were as follows, down below:
- Financial aid: I was offered a full, unconditional financial aid package that meant I did not have to pay to go to college
- Friends: I have multiple other friends going to Duke that contributed to my decision as well since it allowed to be a part of a known community
Class Schedule
- We usually have 4 unique classes a week and 10 class sessions (2 per class and 1 lab for cs/science classes) from 8:30am to 5pm, 2.5-3 hours in that time usually. There are usually 10-20 people in specialized/higher level classes because of expertise but intro classes are 200+
- We had maybe about 15% indians in CS i think
Faculty
- Faculty to student ratio is usually 2:20 for smaller classes and 7:200 for bigger intro classes because of teaching assistants that are ever-present. The best faculties are the social science ones, by far, because thats what Duke is best known for and they make the classes very engaging compared to others.
Campus Life
- There are 2 campuses: east campus, where all the freshmen stay and west campus, where all the rest of the students stay.
- There are multiple libraries on campus that are top-notch. The main unifying force for students is Duke Basketball and the entire school rallies for the Duke-UNC game and March Madness tournament each year.
Part Time Jobs
- Most indian students I knew preferred to work on campus as Teaching assistant for classes that they finished in prior semesters, and the pay is standard pay across the university for most TAs (I was not a TA so I'm not sure). It is definitely not 'easy' to get this, especially for bigger classes, but if you did well in the class, it's very doable.
- Most students who want to get a TA/RA role on campus are able to get them as long as they complete the requisite classes and have the general qualifications for that role/class.
- I believe the maximum allowed work is 20 hours a week, but most students work 5-8 hours a week from the people I know and have conversed with.
Placement
- Almost everybody at duke secures a job after graduation because of how much on-campus support there is; maybe 90%
- 70k-150k USD is probably the general salary range for most students. Students typically find jobs by applying for them on the university partner websites or by applying directly to the jobs.
