CSMU M.Sc Mathematics FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between M.Sc Mathematics and M.Sc Applied Mathematics and Data Science at CSMU, and which should I choose?
Ans. CSMU offers both M.Sc Mathematics (pure/general) and M.Sc Applied Mathematics and Data Science. M.Sc Mathematics covers classical and advanced topics in pure and applied mathematics such as real analysis, algebra, topology, and differential equations, making it ideal for students aiming for academia, research, or competitive exams like UGC NET and GATE. M.Sc Applied Mathematics and Data Science has a higher fee (Rs. 65,000/year) and is more industry-oriented, focusing on data science, machine learning, and computational mathematics. If you want a strong theoretical foundation and plan to pursue Ph.D. or teaching, M.Sc Mathematics is the better choice. If you want to enter the data science or analytics industry, the Applied Mathematics and Data Science programme would be more suitable.
Ques. What competitive exams can I appear for after completing M.Sc Mathematics from CSMU?
Ans. After completing M.Sc Mathematics from CSMU, graduates can appear for UGC NET/JRF in Mathematical Sciences (for lectureship and research fellowships), GATE in Mathematics (for PSU jobs and M.Tech/Ph.D. admissions), UPSC Civil Services Examination (with Mathematics as an optional subject), MPSC (Maharashtra Public Service Commission), and banking sector exams such as RBI Grade B and NABARD. Graduates can also pursue actuarial science certifications (ACET exam by IAI) or data science roles in the industry.
Ques. What is the total fee for M.Sc Mathematics at CSMU, and are there any payment options?
Ans. The total programme fee for M.Sc Mathematics at CSMU is Rs. 1,00,000 for the full 2-year duration (Rs. 50,000 per year, comprising Rs. 35,000 tuition fee and Rs. 15,000 other fees). Candidates who have not appeared for CUET PG will need to appear for CSMUCET, which is conducted by the university. Admission is ultimately based on merit in the qualifying examination or entrance test score.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. in Mathematics at CSMU after completing M.Sc Mathematics?
Ans. Yes, CSMU offers Ph.D. programmes in Science, which includes Mathematics, subject to the availability of a supervisor. After completing M.Sc Mathematics, eligible candidates can apply for Ph.D. admission at CSMU as per UGC Regulations 2022. The Ph.D. programme is available in both full-time (minimum 3 years) and part-time (minimum 4 years) modes. Candidates qualifying UGC NET/JRF in Mathematical Sciences are given preference and may also be eligible for teaching assistantships of Rs. 25,000 per month.
Ques. What career options are available after M.Sc Mathematics from CSMU other than teaching?
Ans. Beyond teaching and research, M.Sc Mathematics graduates from CSMU can pursue careers in data analytics, financial modelling, actuarial science, operations research, cryptography, and software development. Companies in the BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) sector, IT firms, and consulting companies actively hire mathematics postgraduates for roles such as data analyst, quantitative analyst, risk analyst, and business intelligence analyst.
