CSMU B.Sc (Research) FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Sc. and B.Sc. (Research) at CSMU, and should I opt for the 3-year or 4-year programme?
Ans. The B.Sc. (Research) at CSMU is a 4-year FYUP programme under NEP 2020. If you complete 3 years, you exit with a B.Sc. degree. If you complete all 4 years, you receive the B.Sc. (Research) degree, which carries greater weight for postgraduate admissions and research fellowships. Students planning to pursue M.Sc., IIT JAM, or research careers are strongly advised to complete the full 4-year programme, as the Research degree is increasingly preferred by top universities and for national fellowships like CSIR-NET/JRF.
Ques. Is CUET-UG mandatory for admission to B.Sc. (Research) at CSMU, or can I apply based on my 12th marks?
Ans. CUET-UG is not strictly mandatory at CSMU. The university accepts both CUET-UG scores and qualifying examination (12th board) marks for admission. However, applying with a CUET-UG score can make you eligible for the CUET-based scholarship scheme offered by CSMU. If you have not appeared for CUET-UG, you can still apply directly through the university portal and be considered based on your 12th percentage.
Ques. Which specialisations are available under B.Sc. (Research) at CSMU, and how is the subject selection done?
Ans. The programme offers specialisations in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, and Geology. As per the CBCS framework, students select one major subject and one minor subject from the available options. The combination is chosen at the time of admission or during the first semester. Popular combinations include Physics-Mathematics, Chemistry-Mathematics, and Mathematics-Statistics. Students should check the latest syllabus on the CSMU website before finalising their combination.
Ques. What are the career and higher study options after completing B.Sc. (Research) from CSMU?
Ans. After completing B.Sc. (Research), students can pursue M.Sc. in their chosen specialisation from CSMU itself or from other universities. The Research degree also makes students eligible to appear for national-level exams such as IIT JAM (for M.Sc. at IITs/NITs), CSIR-NET/JRF, GATE (for certain programmes), and JEST (for physics/mathematics). Career options include roles in research laboratories, government scientific organisations (DRDO, ISRO, BARC), teaching, data analytics, and the pharmaceutical/chemical industry, depending on the specialisation chosen.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available at CSMU for B.Sc. students, and what are the approximate costs?
Ans. Yes, CSMU provides on-campus hostel accommodation for students. For 2026-27, hostel fees range from Rs. 92,000/year (Triple Occupancy, Non-AC) to Rs. 1,40,000/year (Double Occupancy, AC). Mess/food charges are separate and are set by the hostel management through a catering tender process. Electricity beyond a fixed monthly limit is charged at actual rates. Hostel accommodation is optional and not mandatory for B.Sc. students.
Ques. How does the fee refund work if I decide to withdraw from the B.Sc. (Research) programme after paying fees?
Ans. CSMU follows UGC refund guidelines. If you withdraw 15 or more days before the last date of admission, you receive a 100% refund minus a processing charge of up to Rs. 1,000. Withdrawing less than 15 days before the last date gives a 90% refund; within 15 days after the last date gives 80%; between 15-30 days after gives 50%; and beyond 30 days after the last date or after commencement of classes results in no refund. The application fee of Rs. 1,500 is non-refundable under all circumstances. It is advisable to confirm your admission decision before the last date to maximise your refund eligibility.
