Which is a better B-school between FMS, ISB and IIM Lucknow?

The student fraternity of ISB is very different from that of FMS and IIM Lucknow. ISB requires a minimum of 2 years and an average of 4 years of work experience for admission. Whereas IIM Lucknow and FMS focus more on academics and almost 40% of the batch comprises freshers. Others have 2 or fewer years of experience. My answer is divided into 3 parts If you have work experience of 2 or fewer years: In this case, you should give up on ISB and totally focus on FMS or IIM Lucknow. Personally, I would suggest you go for IIM Lucknow because of its brand image. Despite the fact that FMS offers high ROI, you can never underestimate the value of an IIM tag. If you have work experience of 2-3 years: This is the toughest decision as you can nearly go for ISB but will be risking a lot including its extravagant fees. But you won’t regret choosing ISB because of its peers, faculty, research orientation, and campus life. It is also the place where all the big consulting firms come for placements. So if you value reputed firms a lot then go for ISB. If you have above 3 years of experience: Close your eyes and without thinking choose ISB.

Why is the IIM Lucknow Brand value increasing over FMS's, in the opinion of MBA aspirants?

Before I even answer your question let me contradict it. No, the IIM Lucknow brand value is not really increasing over the FMS in any aspect. If anyone really thinks so then he/she is just after the brand name. To clarify my point, I have listed out some strong points in favor of FMS that might change your mind. A cost-benefit analysis that includes tangible and intangible asset(s) evaluation will prove the fact that FMS certainly does better. Apart from this the ROI factor cannot be underestimated in the case of FMS. Your purpose of pursuing an MBA will very much determine the brand value of a college. If you just want to attach a tag with you for life then IIM it is, but if you are looking beyond that and want to be exposed to a self-discovery journey along with MBA, then FMS is for you. The infrastructure is indeed lacking when compared to IIM Lucknow, but this never means that it fails to impart quality education. In fact, FMS has given birth to many top-class management leaders. The batch size is very low in comparison to IIM Lucknow. This simply means more opportunities and less competition. FMS is a very old institute almost 60+ years of age whereas IIM Lucknow has completed half of this time only. So we can definitely conclude that FMS is a fairly decent choice and that it’s just a misconception that IIM Lucknow is increasing in brand value. Someone has rightly said At an IIM you loan your MBA, but at FMS you own it!

How would you rank the following business schools, ISB, IIM A, B, C, L, XLRI, FMS, and SPJIMR?

All the aforementioned colleges are among the best B Schools in India so the choice between them depends on your preference and future prospects. You need to determine what exactly you want from the program and where your career currently is. In general, ISB is for people who have better industry experience, good leadership skills and decent academics. The other B Schools focus more on excellent academics throughout your career. The ranking of these institutes in my opinion is ISB, IIM-A, B, C>IIM-L, FMS, XLRI,>SPJIMR The above preference order is based on a number of factors like career progression, college market value perception, quality of faculty, quality of students, academic learning, quality of recruiters and infrastructure.

The experience with fellow students was exhilarating to say the least. The different perspectives that they have to offer is mind boggling

Sometimes it felt as if the curriculum is too intense. The load can be lightened a little bit

Excellent internship opportunities are available here. The college administration along with the placement committee makes sure that each and every student is placed here. Average stipend is 1.5 lakhs per month. All big FMCG, consulting, finance etc firms visit the campus

The diversity of students which you have here is very helpful as you get to learn from your peers very much as they all are from different background and everyone has a different mindset with some or the other quality which really helps as a student.
The quality of faculty that we have is very helpful.

Sports facilities have a scope of improvement.

Numerous reputed companies like Amazon, Flipkart, SBI cards, NPCI comes to the campus to recruit and they offer a handsome stipend for summer internships as well, for eg. in 2023 the average stipend was around 2 L. The projects differ from role to role it depends on which role you are hired for whther it is marketing or finance, operations, consulting genman etc.

Intense competition for getting marks and placements

There are a lot of companies that come for summer internships. The process happens in September and the internships are scheduled after the completion of the first year, mostly in the first or second week of April. The companies that come for the internships are - Mckinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company, Microsoft, Deloitte, Accenture, TAS, HUL, P&G, Uber, Amazon, Atlassian, Aditya Birla, Reliance, Adani Group, Citi Group, JP Morgan, etc. The projects are of different domains like marketing, sales, product management, consulting, and operations.

IIMs are more than just placements

Course was good. With specializations, faculty was good. Really liked the course bidding system

Library is too small for the entire batch. New reading halls could be made near hostels.

Average Stipend of 2.3 lacs per month. I was offered a role with EY & worked in the wealth management space where I helped the client launch their fintech platform. Stipend was 1 lac per month. The role offered was management consulting.

The MBA life - glance at IIM L

Faculty - quite amazing and always helpful
peer group - pantheon of next gen leaders are created here, its quite the catalyst to drive you

Its a little away from airport & main city though self-sustainable but trips with friends are a little daunting usually

The campus has a 100% placement stat for summer placements (internships) - with prominent companies from different domains offering opportunities- some of them are Barclays, HDFC, HSBC, Kotak, GEF, Multiples, A&M, Bain, Kearney, Mckinsey, Google, Disney + Hotstar, Natwest, Atlassian, HUL, P&G - as per 2022-24 report. The highest stipend offered was 3.5 lakhs a month with the average & median stipends offered to be 1.41 lakhs and 1.5 lakhs per month respectively. The roles are in the domain of consulting, finance, product management, general management, marketing etc, with product details and outcomes addressed by the respective companies only.
