CSJMU DGO FAQs
Ques. Is the DGO at CSJMU offered on the main university campus or at an affiliated college?
Ans. The DGO programme is not offered on the CSJMU main campus. It is offered through G.S.V.M. Medical College, Kanpur, which is an affiliated medical college of CSJMU. GSVM Medical College is a government institution located in Swaroop Nagar, Kanpur. The degree is awarded by CSJMU. Students receive clinical training at the Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, which has a dedicated Maternity Hospital unit with a very high volume of obstetric and gynaecological cases, providing excellent hands-on surgical and clinical training.
Ques. How many seats are available for DGO at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, and what is the competition like?
Ans. There are 7 seats available for the DGO programme at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur. Out of these, 15% (approximately 1 seat) goes to the All India Quota (AIQ) and the remaining 85% (approximately 6 seats) are filled through UP State Quota counselling. DGO is a popular choice among MBBS graduates interested in obstetrics and gynaecology, and the competition is significant given the limited seats and the reputation of GSVM Medical College.
Ques. Do PG students at GSVM Medical College receive a stipend during the DGO programme?
Ans. Yes, PG students at GSVM Medical College receive a monthly stipend of approximately Rs. 86,000 per month as per UP government norms. This stipend is provided throughout the duration of the 2-year DGO programme. However, students are required to sign a bond for compulsory rural service after course completion. Failure to fulfil this obligation results in a penalty of Rs. 40,00,000.
Ques. What is the difference between DGO and MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology at GSVM Kanpur?
Ans. DGO is a 2-year postgraduate diploma in obstetrics and gynaecology, while MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a 3-year postgraduate degree. MS OBG has 17 seats at GSVM and offers deeper academic, surgical, and research training, making it more suitable for those aspiring to teaching positions or superspeciality courses. DGO is ideal for those who want to enter clinical practice sooner and is particularly popular among doctors who wish to set up their own gynaecology practice. Both require NEET PG for admission. DGO holders can later pursue MS OBG through NEET PG as a fresh candidate.
Ques. Can candidates from outside Uttar Pradesh apply for DGO at GSVM Kanpur?
Ans. Yes, candidates from outside Uttar Pradesh can apply for the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats through MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) counselling at mcc.nic.in. The 85% State Quota seats are reserved for UP domicile candidates and are filled through UP NEET PG counselling at upneet.gov.in. Candidates from other states are not eligible for the State Quota seats.
Ques. What are the career opportunities after completing DGO from CSJMU (GSVM Medical College)?
Ans. After completing DGO, graduates can work as gynaecologists and obstetricians in government and private hospitals, maternity homes, and nursing homes. Many DGO holders set up their own gynaecology and obstetrics practice. They are also eligible for positions in government health programmes such as NHM (National Health Mission) and Janani Suraksha Yojana. For those interested in academic careers or superspeciality training (such as Reproductive Medicine or Maternal-Fetal Medicine), pursuing MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology through NEET PG is the recommended path.
