SASTRA B.Sc. + M.Sc. (Biotechnology) FAQs
Q1. What is the difference between the 5-year integrated M.Sc. Biotechnology and the regular 2-year M.Sc. Biotechnology at SASTRA?
Ans. The 5-year integrated programme is designed for students entering directly after Class XII. It combines B.Sc. and M.Sc. Biotechnology into a single 10-semester curriculum, allowing students to complete both degrees in 5 years. The regular 2-year M.Sc. Biotechnology is for students who already hold a B.Sc. degree. The integrated programme offers a more cohesive learning experience and saves one year compared to pursuing B.Sc. (3 years) and M.Sc. (2 years) separately.
Q2. What is the total fee for the B.Sc. + M.Sc. (Biotechnology) integrated programme at SASTRA?
Ans. The total course fee is Rs. 2,04,750 for the entire 5-year programme. This includes tuition fees of Rs. 20,000 per semester (Rs. 2,00,000 for 10 semesters) and a one-time special/registration/medical fee of Rs. 4,750. There is no development fee for this programme category.
Q3. What career options are available after the integrated M.Sc. Biotechnology from SASTRA?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in biotech and pharmaceutical companies, research and development laboratories, agricultural biotech firms, food technology companies, and clinical research organisations. Many graduates also go on to pursue Ph.D. programmes in India or abroad. Career roles include research scientist, bioprocess engineer, quality control analyst, regulatory affairs executive, and bioinformatics analyst.
Q4. Can I exit after 3 years with a B.Sc. degree from the integrated programme?
Ans. The integrated programme is designed as a continuous 5-year curriculum. While the programme awards both B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees upon completion, students should confirm with SASTRA's academic office regarding any exit options, as policies may vary. It is advisable to contact the admissions office directly for clarification on this.
Q5. What laboratory and research facilities are available for Biotechnology students at SASTRA?
Ans. SASTRA's School of Chemical and Biotechnology (SCBT) is equipped with advanced research laboratories for molecular biology, genetic engineering, microbiology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics. The school has dedicated research centres and collaborates with national and international research institutions. Students also have access to SASTRA's central research facilities and are encouraged to participate in research projects from the early years of the programme.
