Pondicherry University (PU), a NAAC A+ accredited central university established in 1985, offers a Full Time Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology through its Department of Food Science and Technology. The programme has a minimum duration of 3 years (extendable up to 6 years) and is a regular on-campus research degree requiring scholars to be physically present at the Kalapet campus in Puducherry. The total course fee for the programme is approximately Rs. 83,378 for the minimum 3-year duration, making it one of the most affordable doctoral programmes in the country. Admission is through a university-level Computer Based Test (CBT) entrance examination, and CSIR-UGC JRF/NET qualified candidates are exempted from the entrance test. The department offers Ph.D. in both Food Science and Technology (PHD 158) and Food Science and Nutrition (PHD 152) with a combined intake of 18 seats, and is popular for its applied research in food processing, food engineering, food safety, and food microbiology.

Admissions for the academic year 2026-27 are currently ongoing. The application deadline was extended to 31st March 2026 (11:50 PM). The entrance examination for Ph.D. Food Science and Technology is scheduled for 2nd May 2026 (Slot II). Candidates who have already applied should download their admit cards from 25th April 2026 onwards from the official admission portal (pondiunivadmission.samarth.edu.in). For CSIR-UGC NET/JRF exempted category, the last date to submit requests to the department was 20th February 2026, and interviews will be scheduled by the respective departments thereafter.
