PU Certificate Russian FAQs
Ques. Is the Certificate Course in Russian currently being offered at Pondicherry University?
Ans. The Centre for Foreign Languages at Pondicherry University lists Russian as one of its offered languages on its official programme page. However, the 2026-27 Add-On Course notification (January 2027) included only French, German, Japanese, and Arabic, and did not list Russian. This may be due to insufficient enrolment or faculty availability for that session. Students interested in the Russian course should directly contact the Centre for Foreign Languages to confirm whether it will be offered in 2027-28.
Ques. Can I join the Certificate Course in Russian if I am not a student of Pondicherry University?
Ans. Yes, when offered, the course is open to external candidates. External candidates pay a slightly higher fee (Rs. 8,500 for the full course) compared to university students/employees (Rs. 5,200). However, preference in admission is given to students already enrolled in Pondicherry University departments, so external candidates should apply early.
Ques. What are the class timings and how many days per week are classes held?
Ans. Classes for the Certificate Course in Russian are held four days a week, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM (2 hours per day). Saturdays and Sundays may also be utilised at the discretion of the Centre. This evening schedule makes it convenient for working professionals and students pursuing other full-time programmes to attend simultaneously.
Ques. What level of Russian proficiency will I achieve after completing this course?
Ans. The two-semester curriculum (approximately 256 contact hours) covers beginner to elementary-intermediate level Russian, including the Cyrillic script, basic grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and conversational skills. This broadly corresponds to A1-A2 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Students seeking internationally recognised certification should additionally appear for TORFL (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language) or similar exams.
Ques. Why should I learn Russian and what career opportunities does it open?
Ans. Russian is one of the five official UN languages and is widely used in diplomacy, science, technology, space research, and international trade. India and Russia have strong bilateral ties, and knowledge of Russian is valuable for careers in the Indian Foreign Service, defence, energy sector (especially oil and gas), and academic research. It also opens doors to studying in Russian universities, many of which offer scholarships to Indian students.
Ques. What happens if the minimum number of students (20) is not met for the Russian course?
Ans. As per the official notification, the course requires a minimum of 20 registered students to be offered. If sufficient enrolment is not achieved, the course may not be conducted for that session. This is likely why Russian was not included in the 2026-27 batch. Students are advised to confirm with the Centre for Foreign Languages directly before making any arrangements.
