IIM Ahmedabad Admission FAQs

Ques. Do I need to give CAT to be eligible for other courses offered by IIM Ahmedabad?

Ans. No, not necessarily, there are some courses offered by IIM Ahmedabad that don't require you to sit for the CAT exam. Some of these courses are online courses like Restaurant Design and Management, HR Analytics, Young Entrepreneurs Program, Management and Finance for Experienced Chartered Accountants, etc. There are also some offline classroom courses that have different eligibility criteria, like the 1 year executive MBA (PGPX) program, Ph.D. Program, etc., to be eligible for these programs you don’t need a CAT score, they have their own eligibility criteria like for example, to be able to take the PGPX program a candidate has to appear for GRE exam, must be more than 25 years of age, must have work experience of more than four years after his/her graduation.

Ques. What are the prospects of PhD in Management from IIM Ahmedabad compared to MBA?

Ans. A PhD in management from IIM Ahmedabad takes almost 4-5 years or even more than that. If you want to join a PhD programme solely based on your research interests, it might not be the most lucrative option for you but if you want to go for a teaching profession in the future, you should definitely consider this option. If you want to land a high-end research role in the industry of statistics, data science, machine learning or economics, you should consider going for PhD. The monetary benefits that you receive from this degree will be relatively lesser than any other MBA course, too. While pursuing PhD, you get to choose your own flexible timings for work and everybody research except for the lecture timings. One of the cons of this degree will be that you will get little to no pay for addressing your students’, alums, and faculty members’ queries and being a part of endless meetings at odd hours of the day.

Ques. Does UGC approve the FDP in Pedagogy and Research Methods provided by IIM Ahmedabad?

Ans. No, UGC or any other body has not approved this course as of now but IIM Ahmedabad issues a certificate to all the faculty members participating in the course by the end of the programme.

Ques. Will I get direct admission in IIM Ahmedabad if I score 100 percentile in CAT?

Ans. There is a good chance that you will get a call for the interviews from IIM Ahmedabad , but it isn’t guaranteed. IIM Ahmedabad gives calls based on a composite score that is calculated by considering your CAT score, 10th, 12th and graduation percentage, work experience, gender diversity, academic diversity, etc, weightage is allotted to each of these sections and scores are given based on a range of scores. IIM Ahmedabad or any other IIM, for that matter, doesn’t give direct admission solely based on your CAT percentile, the first phase of admission process is giving CAT exam, you must clear the sectional cut-offs and the minimum cut-off to be eligible and considered for the call, you must also get shortlisted to get a shot at the interviews and group discussion process. There have been many cases of students who had scored a perfect 100 percentile in CAT exam but weren’t called or shortlisted for the interviews and group discussions. This shows that a call, let alone a direct admission, at 100 percentile is not guaranteed.

Ques. Is there any international scholarship available for non-Indian citizens at IIM Ahmedabad?

Ans. Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation’ (ITEC) Scholarship Programme, Special Commonwealth African Assistance Programme (SCAAP) and Technical Cooperation Scheme of Colombo Plan (TCS of Colombo Plan) are some of the scholarships available to foreign students. Individuals who are citizens of 162 Partner Countries are eligible for a full scholarship from the Department of Programme Administration, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India . These 162 countries include countries from Latin America, East Europe, Africa, and Asia. The scholarship includes a return air-fare, monthly allowance, stationery allowance, allowance for travelling, and a full programme fee.

Ques. What all topics are tested in AWT for IIM Ahmedabad MBA admission?

Ans. Applicants who are called for AWT/PI rounds for IIMA MBA admission can expect topics based on current affairs based on socio-political areas, economy, banking and other related subjects. PI is exhaustive and lasts maximum upto 20 minutes. Judging the applicant's knowledge, knowing about his/her past experiences and goals.

Ques. Is it mandatory to take the GMAT/GRE before applying for PGPX at IIM Ahmedabad?

Ans. Yes, it is mandatory for all applicants to take either GMAT or GRE test before applying for PGPX at IIM Ahmedabad as it allows the institute to evaluate candidates in a standardised system for a fair chance.

Ques. Do part-time jobs count towards the minimum work experience requirements at IIM Ahmedabad?

Ans. In most cases no; for example, if you are applying for 2025-27 batch you must expect to have at least four years of full-time work experience post graduation by March 2025. However there’s an exemption made by IIMA for candidates if there are extenuating circumstances which mean that they have only been able to work part-time or on temporary contracts.

Ques. Do I need management experience to qualify for MBA at IIM Ahmedabad?

Ans. Management experience or related qualifications and goals will be important for candidates who are successful in gaining entry into the programme. IIMA expects candidates to have experience in managing both projects and people.

Admission:

I had applied to all major business schools in India including IIM Ahmedabad. The others included IIMs including but not limited to Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Lucknow, etc. These colleges admit students basis the CAT entrance exam followed by a personal interview round. The cut-off for students to be able to receive a call from IIMA stands at 99.75 and above. This percentile is especially for those students with an engineering background and having minimal work experience. For a candidate like myself (general category; male; fresher; engineer), the cut-off can go even further depending on the diversity of the candidate pool in that year. Following the CAT result, the IIMA has a single day written essay as well as personal interview round. The candidates are called in groups to write an essay basis some key words or from a starting point. Following this, the candidates are interviewed on various topics including the need to pursue MBA, past experience, thought process basis the previously written essays. Apart from CAT, leading exams include XAT (for XLRI college, a leading name in business strategy and HR strategy courses), IIFT (for IIFT college in Delhi). All these exams follow the similar rule as applied by IIMs via CAT as explained above. IIFT does have a group interview to assess skills of discussion and deliberation. I had secured admission to IIM Calcutta, IIM Indore, IIM Lucknow, FMS, IIFT, and XLRI. I however did not get admitted or shortlisted to IIM Bangalore due to various reasons such as lack of work experience (prior to MBA). I chose to pursue MBA from IIM Ahmedabad as it was my dream institute. The reasons were aplenty including but not limited to the curriculum, the position in world and India rankings, the placement records, and the perceived stature of the institution.

IIM Ahmedabad: 32 Answered Questions

Is getting into IIM Ahmedabad possible for an average student?

Parth ReddyStudied at IIM Ahmedabad

If you are already convinced that an average student cannot make it into IIM Ahmedabad, then you won’t be giving your best. Remember it's your mindset that determines your chances of admission.

I will narrate an anecdote of a friend who took the CAT, a few months ago. He had done a B.E. in electronics and comm. from a top local institute in Bengaluru and worked for 10 months in an IT role. He received a list of colleges he should target from his coaching based on his scores and overall profile.

Nevertheless, he wanted to get into IIM Ahmedabad. He had no one to guide him and his list did not have a single IIM. It seemed almost impossible but he did not give up.

Ultimately, he made it into IIM Ahmedabad and all his friends were shocked. They couldn’t believe someone with an average profile like him.

Should I Leave IIM Ahmedabad admission offer for RBI Grade B?

Shivani Tiwari
Anuj Sharmastudied at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

Let’s talk about the advantages and disadvantages of these options before choosing one of them.

RBI Grade B -

  • RBI comes only after UPSE. Considering the political pressure of UPSE, RBI can be the best job in India.
  • The salary package is similar to the median CTC offered at IIMA.
  • RBI has great job security, irrespective of the ruling party. Govt. policies like privatization won’t affect RBI.
  • Posting will be always in the state capital.
  • RBI jobs have a great work-life balance.

IIMA -

  • Batch size of IIMA is over 400. You will have to do exceptionally well to stand out from the crowd and bag offers from top investment banks and consulting firms.
  • The course fee for the PGP is INR 23 lakhs. This can be burdensome for some students. Even if you get an INR 25 LPA CTC, after paying education loans, tax, EMI, etc, you will have around INR 1 lakh in hand.
  • Many quit investment banking jobs or consulting jobs after a few years due to huge job pressure.
  • The Covid-19 recession caused many recruiters to withdraw their offer even for IIM A,B,C. There are a number of things that can affect final placements.

Factor in all these points to make the decision that’s best for you.

Is there a possibility to not receive a call from IIM A/B/C, even after scoring 100 percentile in CAT?

Yes, there is a chance that you may not receive a call from IIM even after scoring 100 percentile in CAT. However, this happens only for IIM Bangalore.

You will receive a call from IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta because they choose the top 50 percentilers. But IIM Bangalore has an unknown logarithm for the admission process. I think it focuses too much on academics.

What is the detailed process to get admission into IIM Ahmedabad?

Sonal Mishrastudied at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

The entire admission process at IIM Ahmedabad for the PGP comprises 3 stages.

Stage 1:Preliminary Screening

The candidates that have cleared the CAT cutoff are shortlisted on the basis of a Composite Score or CS. The composite score is made up of academic rating score (AR) (includes 10th marks, 12th marks, and work experience) and normalized overall CAT score.

Or we can say,

What are the criteria to get admission into IIM Ahmedabad?

Aarti AhujaLives in Ahmedabad

IIM Ahmedabad's admission process is carried out into three stages:

  1. CAT Score Shortlisting: In the initial stage, candidates are shortlisted based on their CAT (Common Admission Test) scores. To increase your chances, a CAT score of around 99+ is recommended.
  2. WAT-PI Shortlisting: In the second stage, students who have applied for the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) process are shortlisted. This selection is based on a combination of factors, including past academic performance and CAT scores.
  3. Final Selection Parameters: After the WAT-PI round, a composite score is calculated to determine the final selection. For the final selection, 10% weightage will be given to the AWT, 40% weightage to PI, and 50% weightage to the composite score. Where, Composite Score = Application Rating Score + Normalized CAT score.

And, Application Rating score is based on class 10th, 12th and bachelor exams, and work experience scores. Rather than that several parameters are considered, including:

  • CAT Score
  • Graduation Score
  • 10th Grade Score
  • 12th Grade Score
  • Performance in WAT/GD-PI
  • Academic Diversity
  • Gender Diversity
  • Work Experience (if applicable)

It's important to note that a consistently good academic record, along with a high CAT score, plays a significant role in securing a spot at IIM Ahmedabad. Additionally, the institution values diversity and considers gender diversity and academic diversity as part of the selection process.

Do SRCC students get into IIM Ahmedabad?

Utsav KamraCopy Editor at Careers360

Though Shri Ram College of Commerce has high cut-offs for admission at the graduation level, it is incorrect to assume that all SRCC students who pass the CAT exam will be admitted to IIM Ahmadabad. It is important to remember that work experience is highly valued at IIM Ahmadabad.

Many students from other colleges apply to prestigious institutes. Nothing can stop you from getting into IIM Ahmedabad if you are determined to do so. So remember that regardless of where you studied, you can still get into IIM Ahmedabad.

Is it advisable to settle on JBIMS, if one only aimed for IIM's?

Ashish PaiStudied at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies

Comparing JBIMS with IIMs is highly unjustified as IIMs are way ahead of JBIMS or FMS even if we consider the ROI. They are unique in many aspects such as

  • IIM ABC and ISB is the only B-schools that offer Investment banking profiles in placement. Even if we look at other profiles, it’s easy to infer that they are much superior in terms of quality than the ones offered at JBIMS.
  • Being a pass out of IIMs or ISB, you have an upper hand in the higher spectrum of one’s career, i.e, leadership roles.
  • JBIMS or FMS lack the general ambiance and culture of a typical B School due to a lack of residential and campus facilities.
  • The peer quality of IIMS and ISB are much better than JBIMS whose gender ratio, diversity, and competitive exam are very one-dimensional.
  • The only significant aspect of JBIMS is the ROI which when negated makes JBIMS as mediocre as SP Jain and MDI.
  • The placement statistics of JBIMS are much similar to that of new IIMs or average B Schools like MDI, and SP Jain. They are in no way in comparison to the top IIMs even with batch sizes as small as 120.

So one should choose JBIMS or FMS over IIM only if one wants to spend low fees, take no loans, or pursue MBA in Mumbai or Delhi.

What advice would you give to an 11th-standard boy for getting admitted to IIM Ahmedabad?

Hardik NagarMBA from Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (Graduated 2019)

You must keep an open mind. Be adaptable. You do not always get what you wish for. You must sometimes compromise. So, take a seat. Stop worrying and get on with your life.

Your preferences, likes, and passions do not always remain constant. They can change, and if they do, be open to it. Do what you believe is best for you right now, but don't be stubborn.

If I do my graduation from IGNOU, will there be any difference in chances of getting admission to IIM Ahmedabad?

Aarti AhujaLives in Ahmedabad

An undergraduate degree from IGNOU is acceptable for taking the CAT and getting into an IIM.

An IGNOU degree in no way means that you can not try for the IIMs. But whether an IGNOU degree will lower your chances or not, is solely known upon the interviewers.

Your chances of getting selected largely depend on your overall profile. One of my seniors at IIM Ahmedabad had completed his UG from IGNOU. His overall profile was really impressive, and he also possessed work experience of 2 years as a CA. Thus, he was selected for IIMA.

Make sure to maintain an impressive academic profile, and score well in your CAT exam. If you do so, an IGNOU degree most likely won’t hinder your selection into IIM Ahmedabad.
