- My overall experience was excellent in terms of how the course was structured and the size of the class as well. I was also a teaching assistant for the first year law students which was quite invigorating as it gave me a view of how their classes are structured as well.
- The school also provides a ton of resources for international students, especially when it comes to training on academic writing, academic reading and trainers who work with students on each of their papers to help them improve their scores.
- In terms of the college life, the campus has a host of societies one can join. For me though, my flat became my primary circle of support and company. We had a diverse flat with people from 6 countries which was awesome because it gave us an opportunity to experience our different cultures and the food too. Some of my best memories from York are around our kitchen table where we shared at least one meal everyday and a host of coffee breaks in between studying.
Dislikes
- The only downside I saw was that the local people were a bit ignorant about India and generally the world outside UK which was a bit odd at times, though they were overall good sports about learning.
Campus Life
- The university has a tonne of resources and clubs and societies one can join. There’s also a gym on campus that gives you student prices, complete with a pool.
- There are also intercollegiate events that are organised every now and then, which were super fun. Like, I attended a lovely Diwali party hosted for foreign students and I also went for a great Turkish coffee tasting event. I was also part of the Southeast Asian society and we celebrated Diwali together.
- Since the city center is so close to the university and a part of the campus is at the city center too, students have a ton of things they can participate there too like city walks, pub crawls, ghost walks, theatre, etc.
Accommodation
- I stayed in the university accommodation because that felt safer to me and in terms of cost, it wasn’t costlier than staying off-campus. The accommodation had a laundry room and an entertainment and hangout area which was open 24x7.
- All the buildings were access controlled and only the dorm heads had access to all the buildings and floors. I loved this because that meant that no random people could come straying on our floor and we could feel safe and secure, which was also important for my parents. The college had its own community and provided everyone with lots of different opportunities to connect and socialise.

- Campus Great, airy, huge campus with convenient travel across York city
- Faculty Amazing faculty with varied experience with amazing placement call to discuss CVs and other job opportunities
- Diversity in terms of culture and students
Dislikes
- 1-2 classes per day (had to travel 45 minutes for just 2 classes, so maybe poor schedule)
- Should have better canteen experience (very expensive food)
- Should have better practical implications of theoretical knowledge
Campus Life
- There were always some sort of ongoing events on campus organised by either the University of different courses or different student union parties.
- They were always either free of cost or would only include a nominal fee if some sort of activity was involved.
- Library was the best part of collegewith so many zones made to suit your needs. Quiet zone, computer zone, group study zone, etc. All included in your ID card.
- I preferred to do my assignments in the library often.
- There were many sports facilities with a gym, swimming pool and other courts, but since they were all in different parts of the university, which usually would need a campus bus to get around, I didn't go there often.
- The following is the debrief of the campuses and facilities:
- Campus West—This is the OG campus, home to most colleges, lecture halls, and the iconic Central Hall.
- Campus East—the newer side, with modern buildings, Langwith and Constantine Colleges, and the York Law School.
- York Sport Village—Includes a gym, swimming pool, athletics track, velodrome, and loads of courts and pitches .
- NCUK
- Medical Centre—On Campus West, offering GP services and mental health support.
- Wikipedia
- Bars & Cafe– The Courtyard, D-Bar, Glasshouse, and more – perfect for chilling or grabbing food between lectures
- Norman Rea Gallery—a student-run art gallery right on campus .
- Event festivals: Roses Tournament, Freshers’ Week and Viking Festival don't remember more.
- College Sports – More casual, great for making mates and staying active .
- York Student Cinema – Cheap movie nights on campus .
- Student Media – Get involved with YSTV, URY (radio), or Nouse (newspaper).
Accommodation
- Private accommodation.
- The monthly rent was 650 GBP per month.
- None; I had a friend here in the UK who helped me find one locally in his place.
- I would recommend going for a hostel in case you have no one here who can locally visit the place for private accommodation.
- If you do have someone, a private accommodation which can be shared with 2 students is also a great option.
- My accommodation was 45 mins bus ride from Uni which was far but my part-time job was close to the house, so I chose that.

Likes
- The campus was really good - Huge in terms of size, well maintained, beautiful buildings and surroundings
- Mental health was one of the top priorities at all times
- Staff (Including housekeeping, faculty, cafes) was extremely friendly and helpful
Dislikes
- Careers Team wasn't as great as I had imagined
- A bit secluded as campus is huge
- Needed to have more small supermarkets around the campus
Campus Life
- College has 2 campus: East and West
- All facilities are available. We have 2 supermarkets, restaurants, bars, football turf, gyms, swimming pool, athelete track, a clinic, 3 libraries
- Freshers fest is a major fest that happens, Roses: A rivalry between York and Lancaster is a big event and all societies have many events happening all year round
- There are 100+ societies catering to all hobbies, interests and extracurriculars
Accommodation
- I found my accomodation through university's website
- Monthly rent was £500-800, depending on what room you choose, all bills (light, electricity, wifi), kitchen was included
- No challenges encountered in facing accomodation
- I would suggest always opt for on-campus accomodation
- Most Indian students stay on- campus. Some opt for private accomodation in the city which is a 10 minute bus ride away

Likes
- The environment and ambience, the campus had a great forest cover and a lake flowing through it.
- The resources (the library, the subscriptions, etc) The culture and inclusivity, people were very welcoming.
- The events and student clubs.
Dislikes
- The teaching was good at times (a few lecturers were great, but then there were some who were just reading out from the lecture slides).
- Not much placement support.
- The curriculum felt a bit outdated, there were interesting things but didn’t many include skills that would help you land a job.
Campus Life
- 2 Campuses, East and West both in York, free and paid buses run every 15 mins.
- We had a huge library, super huge and also they were subscribed to almost all the journals.
- Sports was great we had manyyyyyyyyyyy. Sports clubs, weekly competitions, Super huge Gyms.
- No major fests as such but the societies would conduct parties every month. For Indians there is a Diwali Event, super great.
- Cultural and sports once again many societies and many games.
Accommodation
- Off campus accommodation, but it was a student hostel.
- I searched on the web there are many websites as well for this, if you are searching for a house/housemates I would suggest Facebook groups that are already present.
- The rent was around £900 per month (all inclusive), A ensuite room and a shared kitchen.
- Accommodations in York are a scarce resource, be early!!
- People start applying for them as soon as the 1st semester of the previous year. (like for 2025 they start applying in 2024 itself)
- My accommodation was only a 10 min walk away. (The Boulevard, great place if you have good flatmates)
- Most of the Indian students stayed on campus where rent is cheaper a bit (£715 per month) but the rooms are 1/3rd the size of what I had but the security is great!

Likes
- Flexibility in meeting with faculty in addition to regular classes. All professors on my program were happy to schedule time and meet you if you were struggling and were very responsive to emails as well.
- York in itself is a perfect student city with a good blend of social activities as well as a calmer environment you need to focus when compared to cities like London/Manchester. On campus accomodations are great but I lived off campus and it's a perfectly safe city to live off campus if you require something cheaper.
- Student portal that is the university account has all lectures, notes, videos of classes uploaded for all the modules which is extremely preferable if you are one for blended learning.
Dislikes
- Lack of career services or assistance for job search or guidance as an international student requiring sponsorship.
- Thesis at the end of the program is decided from pre-determined list of projects. While professors allow you to proceed with your own ideas if you have something, it's more of an exception than the rule.
- Lesser proximity to bigger cities also means job fairs and conferences are harder to get to and from but it can be managed if planned well.
Campus Life
- The university has two campuses, East and West Heslington. Both aren't too far from each other and have a well-connected bus route. There are a total of nine residential colleges. I was in Wentworth.
- The campus has a big library, which is quite accessible and the cafe in the library was one of my favourite spots. There are exceptional mental health support services on campus.
- In my programme, there was a tea every Wednesday for students to meet up each Wednesday for tea and cakes. It was, in my opinion, the best way to meet people in my position.
Accommodation
- I lived off campus on Fulford Road, which was 15 minutes walk from the campus. I found the accommodation published on the spare room website, which I was checking daily. It was a two-bedroom, two-bathroom place at 425 GBP per person and I connected over a call with my flatmate before I had arrived in York to secure the place.
- My advice to students would be to start looking at accommodations as early as they can and put spare room alerts on their phone. They shouldn't be too shy about taking up accommodations with non-Indian students, as it can often be helpful to have insights from someone who already knows the place. Off-campus flats will be the cheapest option available so make sure you have completely explored that before going for off-campus private hostels.
- Indian students were spread across all types of accommodations, so I can't say there was a majority. There were quite a few living in the Fulford area where I was.

Likes
- My course had some well known professors in the industry.
- There are multiple places in buildings here you can study apart from library, you can book a group study rooms as well.
- Really nice rooms in college accommodation.
Dislikes
- Course was highly research based, over practical based.
- Sports/Gym membership wasn't free and had really expensive fee.
- some if the rooms had electrical heaters and hardly maintained the temperature.
Campus Life
- There are a lot of events and festivals through the months and engaging activities every week, at least 2-3 times in your accommodation.
- There are three libraries; you can book rooms through the app.
- Sports facilities are there, but gyms and swimming need hefty fees. its not free, but you can play pool, table tennis, and basketball. There are a lot of clubs that you can be part of. I was a department rep and Scrutiny officer.
Accommodation
- I went for on-campus accommodation with an ensuite. I tried to find private accommodation but it was very hard to find in York. I contacted agents and tried entering a room and other similar apps but was futile.
- I ended up taking the band 3, AnneLister, a university accommodation, and I think it was the best with the most perfect lake view and cleaned room.
- I would suggest students always opt for university accommodation; they have amazing facilities, and you are more part of the university; you won't miss many classes due to rain or harsh weather. You will be more involved and can get free food at events.

- University of York has a very unique campus. It’s spread over 550 acres and is a beautiful mix of modern and historic architecture.
- It has a diverse range of students from various countries. So it’s very easy to find your kind of people.
- It is very accessible despite being huge. There is a free campus bus service that makes all areas easy to reach.
Dislikes
- If you live off campus, it becomes difficult to interact with students who live on campus. You are still able to interact with a lot of other people but it becomes a bit divided.
- While there are a lot of grocery stores on campus, a few of the big and cheap ones are quite far.
- There are two campuses - while both of them have their own charm. The west campus has residential colleges which are not as well built as the ones on east campus as these are newly built. There is always new construction underway though and work is being done to make them as accommodative as possible.
Campus Life
- There are 9 different colleges with lots of flats. Each flat can accommodate up to 12 students. The east campus has Constantine, Lang with, Goodricke, Anne Lister, and David Kato. Each of these has at least 6-7 buildings with 2-3 floors. The west campus has James, Alcuin, Goworth, etc.
- Both campuses have a medical facility along with grocery shops, cafes, restaurants, libraries, gyms, and several other facilities.
- There are innumerable sports and cultural clubs on both campuses.
- The popular student organisation is called YUSU. There is a club for almost every sport and activity in the world and these have their own meeting rooms.
Accommodation
-
In my first year, I lived in on-campus accommodation, as it made exploring the campus and meeting people really easy.
I found my accommodation on the university website and through university emails. - The monthly rent was around £750 for my college, which included access to my en-suite room, a shared kitchen with 10 other students, and a college common room with various games and entertainment. There is enough space on campus for most first-year students.
- You are given a college of your choice based on preference and availability.
- Most accommodation buildings are a 5-10 minute walk from your course buildings.

Likes
- The lake view and ducks
- Interactive seminars and lectures
- Library. Best place to work on assignments. I had most of my productive time in the library, where I could be in my zone.
Dislikes
- Too much travel from the west campus to the east campus to attend lectures.
- Extracurricular groups or clubs felt expensive to join.
- Wentworth College used to close up early on weekends.
Campus Life
- I lived near the West Campus of the University. The west campus was always very happening, now and then, there were events taking place. Other than the West campus, the university only had the East campus on the other end.
- The west campus had facilities like a Sports center, pubs, cafe, Library, open field, and the famous lake and LongBoi.
- I was not a part of any specific club, but every college on the west campus had its specific clubs. Wentworth College had a club, Vanbrugh College had a different club, James College had their club, and so on.
- All the students from these colleges had joined sports clubs which were available in the Sports Center.
- I was a member of the Hindu Association. There were Indian members from the university across courses. They hosted different activities and parties for Indian people during festivals like Diwali, etc.
Accommodation
- During my application for accommodation, I opted for both on-campus and off-campus accommodations. In the end, I received an off-campus accommodation, but it was worth every pound spent. I found my accommodation through the university portal for applying for accommodations.
- The monthly rent varied from 724 GBP per month for months with 30 days and 748 GBP for months with 31 days. The maintenance and cleaning services were always ready to help with any issues, and all students also had access to the cinema room, laundry, student lounge, pool table, and PlayStation room. These facilities made living 51 weeks there very comfortable.
- The only challenge to be noted for accommodations is the time you start looking for it. Start looking for accommodations as early as possible so that you can receive multiple offers and select the accommodation according to your preference.
- My accommodation was approximately 1.3 km from the University. It was not far to travel by bus, so walking to the university was easy for me. There was not a specific accommodation where only Indian students lived. Indian students were spread out across multiple on & off campus accommodations.

- I liked the fact that the library was always accessible and had common rooms wherein you can go in anytime and study.
- The university's common room had access to various games and a television set which made it more enjoyable to hang out with friends.
- The classrooms were big enough to accommodate huge crowds and the hang out areas throughout the university were aplenty.
Dislikes
- The university could have given a 6 month or a 1 year internship to students looking for a job but wasn't the case at the time.
- When I had enrolled for the university (2018), UK hadn't introduced a work visa without sponsorship for foreign students which made it more difficult to look for a job, clear the interview rounds and the most importantly fetch a Tier - 2 Work Visa.
- I wished the students were divided into 2 classrooms as there were a lot of students in the classroom at a time.
Campus Life
There were about 8 colleges in 2019 at the university. The library was one of the biggest in North Yorkshire. The sports club was also very good. I played a few cricket matches and used to play badminton as well.
Full-time opportunities were aplenty in the UK. The jobs during my stint there in 2018 - 19 were a lot. I had cleared a few rounds of many companies when I applied for jobs. It used to get stuck for Tier-2 visa sponsorship from the company. The average salary for a fresher was GBP 23,000 onwards. The typical way to find jobs was online through company websites job applications etc.

Likes
- UK because of UK culture, British Government and regulations generally similar to India. Ease of getting the Visa and future job Opportunities scope, Business management has better recognition in UK and is famous for Management courses.
- University of York for the location of York (One of the oldest Medieval city and recognized as the most friendly people of UK are the York residents).
- The QS ranking and global ranking of the University that falls under 150 ranks in the world, and stands top 16 in the UK, The campus location and many other factors.
Campus Life
Campus is huge and very spacious, They have many study spaces and the classrooms are very well infrastructured. The teaching method and the availability of materials to study is all online makes it very easy for the student to access them. The library is huge and its very easy to access any book from any corner of the library as it is available online on the YorkLibrary website as to which row and column the book is kept.
Accommodation
I live in a student accommodation at the city centre, I have a private kitchen. My room type is Studio. The student accommodation I have chosen is Student castle York. It is very convenient and feasible for me as it is close to the city centre so it makes it easier for me to access groceries, super markets, activities, restaurants and etc. The bus stop is right to next to my accommodation so it makes it easy for me to travel by bus to uni in 10 mins or a 20 mins walk from my accommodation.
