Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

The University of York was ranked higher than Nottingham Trent University. York University was also a well-established university in research in which I wanted to build my career, hence the reason for accepting York over Nottingham Trent.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

This was the University I was looking to get admitted into but the cut-offs were way too high as per my previous academic scores. I had not written a SOP for one of the University's.

Required Exams for Admission

IELTS (8)

Required Documents For Admission

SOP

Tips to enhance your application

Don't make the SOP for more than 2 pages as longer SOPs are not accepted or the chances of accepting the letter are less. Recheck it multiple times once you have written it as you are bound to make some additional changes once you have written it for the first time.

Admission Experience

  • University of York was a part of the Russell Group, which consisted of 24 universities. All these 24 universities were research-intensive universities. These universities attracted a major chunk of UK research-oriented papers and journals.
  • I was specifically looking for universities in England and not Scotland, Wales and/or Northern Ireland (I was a bit biased here as I had always dreamed of going to a British University).
  • I had a bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and wanted to stay in touch with this field in the future as the situation at that time wasn't favourable for job seekers.

Class Schedule

9

  • The class timings were very flexible and easy to go to. The professors never stopped from attending or skipping a session or two. The presentations were given virtually. There used to be a single session a day or even two, but the timings used to vary. It used to be in the morning or the afternoon.
  • The class strength at my time was 84, and I was the only Indian during my stint there (one British Indian was also there). Early on in the semester, there used to be enough time to understand and then start with the assignments.

Faculty

8

There were about 5 to 6 faculty members during my course and all the faculty members were approachable especially Bidyut Baruah and Tony. Tony was a fun guy to talk with and was always willing to give a helping hand. The faculty member guided you on how to get a job in the country.

Campus Life

10

There were about 8 colleges in 2019 at the university. The library was one of the biggest in North Yorkshire. The sports club was also very good. I played a few cricket matches and used to play badminton as well.

Part Time Jobs

Indian Students preferred to work in Indian restaurants as Indian students prefer to stay close to their culture and most importantly food. It was easy to fetch a part time job in York. The typical process is to just mail or go in person to give your CV.

The off-campus options were plenty as the locals there are willing to hire foreigners for a part-time role. The hourly wage during 2018 -19 was around 7.50 to 7 pounds per hour. The maximum hours allowed to work during the time was 20 hours per week.

Placement

6

Full-time opportunities were aplenty in the UK. The jobs during my stint there in 2018 - 19 were a lot. I had cleared a few rounds of many companies when I applied for jobs. It used to get stuck for Tier-2 visa sponsorship from the company. The average salary for a fresher was GBP 23,000 onwards. The typical way to find jobs was online through company websites job applications etc.
