What Students Say
Likes
- The environment and ambience, the campus had a great forest cover and a lake flowing through it.
- The resources (the library, the subscriptions, etc) The culture and inclusivity, people were very welcoming.
- The events and student clubs.
Dislikes
- The teaching was good at times (a few lecturers were great, but then there were some who were just reading out from the lecture slides).
- Not much placement support.
- The curriculum felt a bit outdated, there were interesting things but didn’t many include skills that would help you land a job.
Admission Experience
-
Uni of York - Admitted
Nottingham - Rejected (Applied for FinTech, was told would be accepted by the Uni representative but I wasn't, mostly because of Tech background)
Uni of Exeter - Rejected (Didn't qualify, applied for FinTech course maybe that was mistake)
Queen Mary - Rejected (they only took B.Tech background students for a finance course weirdly but the next 2024 Jan they started accepting BBA as well)
Manchester Metropolitan - Accepted - Uni of York is part of the Russel Group, had great ranking and reviews. And when we compare it to Manchester Metropolitan the resources here were immense and great.
- The admission process was simple - The application, then if accepted you will have to attend a CAS Interview and then pay 2 Lakhs as admission fee (inclusive in total fee).
- The eligibility criteria was being from the same background (academically). An IELTS test with no band less than 6 and total of 6.5
- The admission process was pretty simple and easy
- I applied for the September 2023 intake.
- The process takes around 3-8 weeks, completely depends on individual applications.
- Mine took around 3 weeks.
- After I applied, I received admit in 1 week (but this depends, for some of my classmates it took 3-5 weeks), and the deadline to accept admit was around 1 month. Then you will have to schedule a CAS interview, if you pass it you will receive the CAS letter within a week max.
Faculty
- The faculty to student ratio, I can't be sure as there was a lot of support staff working in the background.
- The teaching methodology was great with some, some were just reading the slides.
- The content is not enough to land a job. I would suggest you to take up additional certifications and also join the university Investments, Economics club, they have weekly meetings about some topic.
- And if you are in Uni of York taking up finance be sure not to miss the Griff Investment Fund, they are a SMF (student managed fund), great for CV and the fund is super active,
- There won't be much assistance in terms of jobs from the faculty, but there is careers centre which can guide you with the CV and stuff.
- There was Maryam, Jairaj, Mark, Viktor. There teaching styles were great!!!
Campus Life
- 2 Campuses, East and West both in York, free and paid buses run every 15 mins.
- We had a huge library, super huge and also they were subscribed to almost all the journals.
- Sports was great we had manyyyyyyyyyyy. Sports clubs, weekly competitions, Super huge Gyms.
- No major fests as such but the societies would conduct parties every month. For Indians there is a Diwali Event, super great.
- Cultural and sports once again many societies and many games.
Part Time Jobs
- No idea about them but the roles in this aren't that many and are mostly reserved for PhD Students and research students
- On campus jobs would be cleaning staff, cafe staff, library assistant, retail store assistant,
- Maximum hours allowed in UK is 20 hrs per week, during holidays its 40 hrs
- The campus part times are very competitive and some adverts start before the end of final semester it self, they are mostly secured by 2nd and 3rd year undergrads.
- But york has many off campus opportunities in restaurants, parks, trampoline park, Cinemas, malls, Retail Staff (popular choice)
- The average pay would be around £12 per hour
Placement
- I would say around 40%, higher chances if you are local.
- As fas as I know many UK employers are not interested in hiring international students.
- Average salary for finance would be around £30,000 per year,
- Mostly Glassdoor, linkedIn help. Graduate roles are very famous, they open in the 1st semester do apply for them. If possible land an internship would be very helpful.
Accommodation
- Off campus accommodation, but it was a student hostel.
- I searched on the web there are many websites as well for this, if you are searching for a house/housemates I would suggest Facebook groups that are already present.
- The rent was around £900 per month (all inclusive), A ensuite room and a shared kitchen.
- Accommodations in York are a scarce resource, be early!!
- People start applying for them as soon as the 1st semester of the previous year. (like for 2025 they start applying in 2024 itself)
- My accommodation was only a 10 min walk away. (The Boulevard, great place if you have good flatmates)
- Most of the Indian students stayed on campus where rent is cheaper a bit (£715 per month) but the rooms are 1/3rd the size of what I had but the security is great!
Exams
- My university accepted IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, only requirements in terms of tests for international students.
- The necessary documents include Statement of purpose, CV, Transcripts of your previous degree, degree certificate.
- The interview is kinda part of the application, like you will know if you are selected to the university, and then you will need to attend CAS interview - pretty basic, a test to check if you know what uni you are applying to and the course modules, and the country.
Fees
- The total university course fees was £29,990 (tuition fee), paid twice October 31st and January 31st (Even if delayed for genuine reasons the Uni would understand, just have a word with the fees team)
- I stayed in a private hostel near my university - £9,000, Paid quarterly (they had monthly and annual options too)
- Travel was £2 pounds per trip but York is a small city so walking around it would be just as fine
- As for food average meal cost in Uni was around £6, outside would be £10-20
- Cooking is cheaper and better but it's super time consuming
Scholarship
- The university changes scholarships every year, but mostly were merit based.
- Some my international classmates received them, one received £2,500 and the other £5,000
- On average maybe 10% of the class may receive scholarships, but depends from course to course.
- Every course has their own scholarships, mine didn't have specific for the course but the whole masters group had them.
- There are country specific, race specific ones too.
