Course Curriculum

8

  • I think it was medium. The course in general was very well structured, and the UoY online platform had each and every course detail that one could go through. There was a Blackboard app that we used that had this online VLE system.
  • It was a mix of both practical and theoretical. Since we had optional courses that we had to choose along with our main foundational courses. The curriculum was designed to suit your future plans, and we could choose the optional courses to our liking, which was a positive aspect.
  • The negative aspect was that selected faculty members of a few courses were renowned to be strict with marking, which I think influences our decision to choose the course.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to 3 colleges and got accepted at all 3:
    • Aston University (got scholarship of 7 Lakh but, wanted better uni)
    • University of Birmingham (accepted but wanted better university in terms of MPH ranking)
    • University of Leeds (accepted but wanted York because of better ranking)
    • Finally, York accepted and chose my course (MPH)
    • No rejections received
  • It had a better ranking for MPH that year and had a good faculty in the medical sciences dept.
  • My senior colleague was an alumna, and she suggested that York was a good option; therefore, I chose it.
  • The admission process was quite simple. Fateh Education, a consultancy based in New Delhi, helped me with my applications.
  • The first step was getting a good band at IELTS, which I successfully passed in speaking, listening, and writing. Required 6 band and above.
  • Required SOP (statement of purpose letter) and 2 LORs (letters of recommendation from my previous institutes)
  • I had to fill out an admission form for the UOY and then wait for the admission acceptance.
  • The major challenge, I believe, was to show sufficient funds, and therefore I applied for a personal education loan. The process for which was cumbersome, and finally, once approved, it was easy going forward.
  • I applied to the Sept Intake. The admission process was fairly fast. I received my acceptance in 2 weeks. Applied for my visa and then had to wait for visa approvals.
  • The major lag behind was my loan process, which took a long time to confirm. Once my loan was approved, I think I immediately applied for my visa and accommodations.
  • My friend in the UK helped me to find accommodations and therefore it was fairly easy.
  • The whole timeline was close to 3-4 months from submission to final approval. I started my application in May of 2022 and by Aug, I had my visa. Although I did have my SOP and LOR ready for 1 year for my other uni applications, so that saved a lot of time.

Class Schedule

8

  • I had 2-3 classes every day.
  • The average number of students is dependent on the class. Since foundational courses were the same for all, there were close to 80 students in foundational courses and approximately 20 in optional courses.
  • There was a majority of Indian and Nigerian populations in my class. Approximately 20 Indian students out of total 80 students in course studied with me.

Faculty

8

  • Faculty ratio was dependent on the type of class I was in. In each class with a main teacher was also a PhD scholar who was like an assistant to the teachers, which would help in group assignments or in-class group discussion guidance. So, there were sufficient in that methodology.
  • What I really enjoyed was that the studies taught to us in these classes were already sent in advance a day before the class for us to go through the theory on our Blackboard app, and then we could use the studies' knowledge to understand our class better.

Campus Life

10

  • There were always some sort of ongoing events on campus organised by either the University of different courses or different student union parties.
  • They were always either free of cost or would only include a nominal fee if some sort of activity was involved.
  • Library was the best part of collegewith so many zones made to suit your needs. Quiet zone, computer zone, group study zone, etc. All included in your ID card.
  • I preferred to do my assignments in the library often.
  • There were many sports facilities with a gym, swimming pool and other courts, but since they were all in different parts of the university, which usually would need a campus bus to get around, I didn't go there often.
  • The following is the debrief of the campuses and facilities:
    • Campus West—This is the OG campus, home to most colleges, lecture halls, and the iconic Central Hall.
    • Campus East—the newer side, with modern buildings, Langwith and Constantine Colleges, and the York Law School.
    • York Sport Village—Includes a gym, swimming pool, athletics track, velodrome, and loads of courts and pitches .
    • NCUK
    • Medical Centre—On Campus West, offering GP services and mental health support.
    • Wikipedia
    • Bars & Cafe– The Courtyard, D-Bar, Glasshouse, and more – perfect for chilling or grabbing food between lectures
    • Norman Rea Gallery—a student-run art gallery right on campus .
    • Event festivals: Roses Tournament, Freshers’ Week and Viking Festival don't remember more.
    • College Sports – More casual, great for making mates and staying active .
    • York Student Cinema – Cheap movie nights on campus .
    • Student Media – Get involved with YSTV, URY (radio), or Nouse (newspaper).

Part Time Jobs

  • I was allowed as a student to do 20 hours of part-time work and shifts.
  • There were many AVLs part-time campus jobs as well, but they are mostly feasible for someone who lives on campus.
  • The pay range was from 11 to 12 pounds per hour. This was the hourly set pay range for all students.
  • I am not sure if it was easy to get one on campus because I never applied for one. I applied for off-campus part-time jobs available at various stores like clothing, grocery or food joints.
  • There were, although, many students in class who secured campus part-time jobs. usually 5-6 from our class were involved in some sort of campus jobs.
  • I think Indian students, in my opinion, should work part-time at a sociable place like McDonald's, Burger king, Sainsbury's, Tesco, or Primark, where customer interaction is primal, which will not only boost their confidence but also allow them to have the skills to communicate with the UK-based population and know their way around working in retail/food/clothing stores. It's easy to get and can be applied for via LinkedIn/Indeed or walk-in interviews.
  • The process is fairly easy: Search for Jobs Check university job boards and career services. Use online platforms like Indeed, StudentJob, and Save the Student. Follow local businesses on social media for openings. Attend university job fairs and networking events. Submit your tailored CV and a cover letter if required. For some roles, complete an application form. Consider speculative applications by dropping off your CV in person. 4. Prepare for Interviews Research the company and role. Practice common interview questions. Dress appropriately and be punctual.

Placement

8

  • I think first and foremost luck is a big factor and Indian experience in any field does count. I was lucky to working for 1.5 years in the pharma industry before moving to UK which not only gave my cv a boost but also gave to me to sit in interviews and apply for the roles I already had an experience in.
  • The initial thing is to apply for jobs as soon as you submit your thesis/dissertation, which is usually in the last semester. Applying and tailoring your CV are the next essential steps. Acclimatising the CV to the UK-based format and giving it a key work boost, along with keeping your linkedin profile up to date, is equally important.
  • The most important platform is Linkedin and Indeed, which have all recent job openings and one can apply directly from the website or by going to the company portal or asking for referrals if you know anyone working in the same firm.
  • In my batch, close to 15 people found the job but a majority are still struggling to stick with their part times. The most important thing is to make use of the visa you have and apply and secure a sponsorship so as to save money in the future to apply for PSW (post-study work visa). Securing a sponsored job soon saves a lot of money and effort in the future.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • Private accommodation.
  • The monthly rent was 650 GBP per month.
  • None; I had a friend here in the UK who helped me find one locally in his place.
  • I would recommend going for a hostel in case you have no one here who can locally visit the place for private accommodation.
  • If you do have someone, a private accommodation which can be shared with 2 students is also a great option.
  • My accommodation was 45 mins bus ride from Uni which was far but my part-time job was close to the house, so I chose that.

Exams

  • Only IELTS, with a 7-band aggregate, is required for qualification. Many other students who were in my batch also took Duolingo instead of IELTS, so that is also a possibility. One is not required to give any English proficiency test in case you qualified from your studies recently. My last course qualification was in 2019 before I applied to York in 2022, so I had to give one.
  • SOP and LOR were compulsory, and LOR should be signed by the institute head.
  • There was no interview process during my course of application.

Fees

  • The course fee was 20,000 GBP
  • I lived in private accommodation whose rent was close to 650 GBP each month
  • I had to pay 2000 GBP at the start of my course and then there was an option to either pay monthly, semesterly or annually.
  • The estimated monthly expense, including rent groceries or any other expenses, was close to 900 GBP or 1000 GBP.
  • I had to opt for a yearly loan of INR 30 Lac to suffice for my college expenses and fees and had to work part-time at York to manage my finances.

Scholarship

  • There wasn't any during my time at UoY. Since I applied to my course last because I had to change my course option from Pharma to MPH.
  • I THINK ONE OF MY BATCHMATES RECEIVED ONE FOR BEING AN ONLY GIRL CHILD IN INDIA. I am not sure what the process was, and I think it was maybe 5 lakh INR. I'm not sure about this. It was although a national scholarship and I am not aware of any that UoY handed out that year.
