Dislikes
- We wanted the equipments after our exams dates as our course ended early. But they did not allow us first they said they will but they did not once we were done with exams we wanted to shoot for our portfolios separately but we couldn’t due to that.
Course Curriculum
- It was mixed our course was mostly focused on practical basis but we also had theory. They taught us the theory and we also practiced we had practice projects and that was practical. One every week we had practical sessions and other two days theory.
- In my course of Directing Film and television I was only Indian student. But this year’s batch there are more Indian students compared to the ones in our batch. In our course there were 16 students and whole framework like producers, cinematography, script writing, directing, post production which is sound and editing altogether there were around 70 students
Admission Experience
- I got applied to 4-5 colleges, it was Kingston university london, UCA London, UCL london, south wales uni and bournemouth uni. I got accepted in all of them except from UCL I got response very late until that I was already started everything for Bournemouth University. I just in case applied to other universities. But did not receive rejection from any.
- From start I wanted Bournemouth University. Because it had the specific course which I wanted rest others had Film making course. Mine was focused on Directing. The admission process was carried out by an agent, Global opportunities. It was similar procedure how it is for other universities. First I applied then provided the SOP and portfolio. Then got shortlisted I got a conditional offer letter.
- The conditions were submitting the marksheets and transcripts. And had to pay £5000. Once that was done I got unconditional offer letter.
- I applied to 2024 September intake. I started the process in November 2023 and got the decision in January end. They most of the times give our decisions latest by January end at-least in Bournemouth University as they complete their jan intake student application and then move on to sept intake.
- My whole process only took time because I did not have the required documents the final marksheet as I just completed my undergraduate in April 2024 and it took sometime for our college to receive it from mumbai university as our college Pillai’s is anonymous in India. Because of that document it took me until June end to receive unconditional offer letter from Bournemouth University. Or else the process was pretty quick. The response were on time. It slowed down from my side.
Faculty
- We had whole framework subject and our courses subject like specialised for our particular course. So two subjects per semester and final sem only focused on our course. So for entire framework we had 2 professors each for different frameworks. Like producers course had 2 professors editing had two professor, sound had two professors directing had 2 and cinematographers had 3 professors. It was pretty good.
- Faculty members will assist if students do go up to them and ask. Orelse there are different departments in universities which help students with these problems.
- Not faculty members. The course could have been more planned and they could have improved more from their side. In terms of theory or even practical. More detailed.
Campus Life
- It had two campus. Talbot and Lansdowne campus.
- On both campus we had libraries and study area. Talbot campus is much more bigger compared to lansdowne one. In talbot campus there were many buildings. Subu which was student union all indoor sports were in that building itself with any festivals mostly used to happen there. Then for film students a different building. There were coffee stations in 3-4 places. Small cafe in almost each building. Costa in one, starbucks in one, naked coffee in one. Different buildings with different coffee stations variety of options.
- One major festival in Bournemouth is summer ball which happens in may. Which is the biggest festival outside university but the transport everything for students is arranged. Apart from that. Fresher’s Fair and other festivals, keep happening for Indians as well there are Indian societies, clubs and they arrange various festivals.
Part Time Jobs
- It depends on the students experience. One of my alumni did get an offer to be a junior professor but he wanted to go back to India and he had his plans so he declined the offer. But it totally depends, he was very much knowledgeable is the reason he was offered the job. Or else it’s not very easy to get a junior professor job.
- On campus jobs is mostly like you are interviewed and if you have experience in that particular area you do get it.
- I worked as a social media content creator for Student Union. My was hourly, £12.21 per hour and it depended on the number of hours I worked sometimes it used to be 3-4 a week sometimes it was more than 6 hours but as it was social media it wasn’t very busy and it was first come first serve basis who ever interested and free among us used to take part and make content get paid. There were cv submissions with a video then I got shortlisted and passed the face to face interview and then got selected.
- Outside uni as well there are a lot of jobs in different places like subway, mc donalds, any pubs. Or healthcare as well.
- Student mostly find job through referrals easily or they apply on the site of supermarkets as well that works too. I wont say its very easy to find job In Bournemouth because its a town not a big city and not a lot of vacancies are there but if you keep looking you definitely will find it as it’s not impossible.
Placement
- They secure employment if they try finding jobs two months before course ends or as soon as it ends. But to find jobs in their field is a bit difficult depending on their field. Like in Bournemouth people working in healthcare get jobs easily compared to rest.
- In our course we did not have option of placement year as it’s film industry it is difficult so we have to find our own job. So I don’t have an answer for major companies hiring graduates from my program as there are none. Average salaries depend on the field. For my field if I find job in my own as a runner for example, it is £100-150 per day, 10-15 hours of work.
- Different fields like a subway job for example pays minimum wage according to the age £12.21 approx per hour.
Accommodation
- It was associated with uni but it was off campus. They had a tie-up. It was through university we got to know. One of their accommodations is in university campus but I opted for the one in town.
- Around us there were all accommodations all students living. It was 10-15 mins away by bus from uni. I would recommend Bailey point if they are coming to Bournemouth or even Chesil House is a decent accommodation but if they want more modern for post graduate its Bailey Point. Or undergraduate it’s Belaton House. Yugo accomodations are pretty aesthetic with good common areas. Campus Living Villages is okay decent.
Exams
- Ielts was required, depending on the course the scores vary. For our course it was Ielts Academic (UKVI OR NON UKVI) 6 overall minimum of 5.5 in each component. - -Portfolio/CV was required along with statement of purpose, also 2-3 LOR were provided
- Interview wasn’t conducted in Bournemouth University. It was mostly all the process was through documentation and sop’s and porfolio basis. So there was no interview as such.
Fees
- Fees was £17000. I had to pay £5000 before getting CAS one of the condition in conditional offer letter. We paid £5000 and then we directly paid the remaining which was £8250. Got a scholarship of £3250 from uni.
- For accommodation it was in 3 part payments. It was weekly £187. Annually around £9000. Bus pass was also there which was around £250-300 for entire year. Bus pass was basically used to go around anywhere in zone A Bournemouth which included most of the Bournemouth. Rent was paid once three months.
- Monthly expense used to vary if someone cooks at home and spends very little on takeouts and going out with friends they will spend around £300-350 minimum and ones who don’t cook a lot and party they spend around £500 minimum. In starting few months it is very expensive as we get duvet, pillows bedsheets, everything and basic groceries as well.
Scholarship
- I did receive a scholarship. It was academic. For anyone who scored above 70% in their undergraduate degree. Was eligible for that scholarship. I got a scholarship of £3750. Everyone from our year got this automatically if they scored and proved they have 70 or 70 above in their undergraduate degree.
- One of my batchmate was on Chevening Scholarship. She was from Kenya. And other students also got different scholarships like sports or music depending on the scholarships and their fields.
