Course Curriculum

8

  • The course curriculum was pretty beginner level. We started from the basics, which helped a lot of us. It was a mix of both theory and practical, but the focus was mostly on the practical aspect.
  • I would say the theory parts were mostly during the beginning of the year. I liked that they focused more on the practical part, which helped us have hands-on experience with the software early on.
  • There were around 90-100 students in my course but it varied in lectures/labs, as we were split into groups/combined with other courses.
  • Not more than 6-7 Indian students are in my course.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to 6-7 colleges in the UK
    • Northumbria, shortlisted (conditional offer)
    • Westminster, shortlisted
    • Teesside, shortlisted
    • Anglia Ruskin, shortlisted
    • Bournemouth, admitted
    • East London, rejected
    • Hertfordshire, rejected
  • I only received confirmed admission from Bournemouth University.
  • I was rejected by Hertfordshire and East London
  • I was probably rejected because my portfolio hasn't met the expectations for the particular courses.
  • Bournemouth University is ranked in the top 5 as the best university for Computer Animation and VFX (in the UK); hence, i decided to choose them.
  • I was given a conditional offer after i submitted my predicted marksheet, IELTS, CAS letter and Letter of Recommendation, then I was given an unconditional offer after I got my results.
  • IELTS was considered for all the universities, with 7 being the minimum overall score in most of them
  • I went through an agency that helped me with the entire process free of charge, which was a great help, especially with applications and visas.
  • I applied for the September intake, as that was the only intake for my course at that moment
  • The admission process did take quite a lot of time, as I was waiting for my results and that was delayed because of corona. I had to wait nearly a whole month for my results and then for the CAS. I was able to finish the process sometime in August last week or the first week of September.

Faculty

8

  • Along with a bunch of lectures, we had mentors available at the labs and whenever required – who would help us with technical difficulties related to software or practical skills.
  • Yes, I believe that they helped a lot to prepare us for our field. We had the freedom to do what we wanted and guidance and critical feedback from the lecturers.
  • Yes, I got my first volunteer freelance job through a faculty member. He helped many students get this job, which helped a lot of us with gaining experience.
  • I have to save i admire the lecturer who helped us get the freelance job; he was also my lecturer for 2-3 subjects during my last year and helped me greatly whenever I had doubts.

Campus Life

8

  • There are 2 main campuses: Talbot campus (Poole) and Lansdowne campus (Town centre)
  • Talbot campus has the Students' Union, Sports BU Gym, Fitness studios, Sports hall, Art exhibition display, Cafe, Libraries, Talbot medical, Kitchen and Bar, Career centre. This campus has a Faculty of Media and Communication, Science and Technology, and Undergraduate programs while the Lansdowne campus holds the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, Business School postgraduate programs and the Westin library.
  • There's many clubs and festivals but some that I've been to are the Diwali event by the Indian society club at University's Pub—Old Fire Station—and other club events by the kpop society and the animation society.
  • Our Faculty also holds the yearly BFX festival for the VFX and Animation students where a bunch of masterclasses and workshops are held.

Part Time Jobs

  • There are many student part-time opportunities provided on and off campus. You can be part of the Student Union and work at the Bars, outlets and on campus as open day tour guides and BU ambassadors off campus.
  • I wouldn't know the exact pay range but university part-times must offer £10 per hour. But this isn't a constant part-time job, only available when there's demand; hence, it can be done on the side along with other part-time jobs.
  • It should not be very difficult to secure these jobs; there are interview/video recording applications as well where you can show your enthusiasm to be part of their team.
  • Usually the payment range varies from place to place, especially off campus. Most fast food places offer the minimum wage pay range, which must be £7 to £10 while some restaurants and Grocery store might offer a higher hourly pay.
  • It has become quite difficult to find part-time jobs, as there's very high demand and very few opportunities. You need to apply early on before university even starts to hopefully secure a place at one of the part-times. Living closer to the town center is also a plus, as there are more opportunities for part-time work.
  • Usually you need to fill out the application and if selected, there will be an interview round. Most questions are customer-focused and situational .

Placement

6

  • In my course, there are many people who are still struggling to find jobs but that is mostly because of the job market and the Hollywood strikes and multiple layoffs that started right after our graduation. The years before that, they had quite good results with securing full time jobs.
  • I don't have much knowledge in this area but the min salary for freshers in our field must be around £25,000 per year.
  • We do not have campus placements/ recruitments but the BFX festival gives us the opportunity to connect with industry professionals and recruiters who can give us advice on how to approach the job applications.
  • Our course also has a placement year before the final year for students who are interested in taking up internships before finishing their course. There will be guidance given and also there's a Careers BU that helps with finding placements (we didn't have much luck for our course)

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • In my first year I used uni accommodation and booked through my university. In my second year, I moved into a rented house with a bunch of friends and we found this through LettingsBU, another website from the University that helps students find houses to rent outside of uni accommodation. In third year we moved back into a different uni accommodation.
  • We were paying £140 per week at the University accommodation which included all bills. While renting in my 2nd year, I paid £90 per week, but the bills had to be paid by us, and the rates were very unstable.
  • I'd recommend uni accommodation, as it is a very smooth process and not much hassle, especially for international students who are new to the city. Then you can consider rented houses and preferably ones that include bills as well.
  • Both uni accommodations were a bus ride away, while the rented house was a 15-min walk.

Exams

  • I applied for the September intake, as that was the only intake for my course at that moment
  • The admission process did take quite a lot of time, as I was waiting for my results and that was delayed because of corona. I had to wait nearly a whole month for my results and then for the CAS. I was able to finish the process sometime in August last week or the September first week.

Fees

  • £14100 for 3 years for tuition; I got an academic excellence £1,500 scholarship in the first year only. This fee was for international students at that time.
  • We also need to pay for the Health insurance, once at the beginning of joining the course – somewhere around 1 1/2 or 2 lakhs at the time I was joining
  • The fees were charged at once at the beginning of every year to some international students.
  • Monthly expenses vary from person to person based on their way of living. Around £600 to £900 can be expected.

Scholarship

  • Yes, I received a scholarship in the first year of my course. It was the Academic Excellence scholarship which requires the student to have scored certain score in their 12th results.
  • The award amount for the scholarship was £1500 which was deducted from the fees in the first year.
  • UK and some european students recieved student loans from the University i believe. And some students also get sports/ music related scholarships (based on the course as well)
  • Acadmic Excellence scholarship must be accessible to everyone who reaches the eligibility criteria, i don't think there were any limitations on how many scholarships are given each year.
