Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • I choose the University of Manchester because it’s one of the top-ranked universities in the uk and globally recognised for its academic excellence. It consistently ranked among the best in the world, especially for economics, which played the key role in my decision.
  • The strong research focus, experienced faculty and overall academic environment made the right fit for me.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • The program I chose at the University of Edinburgh required prior experience, which I didn’t have at that time. Since the option didn’t align with my goal as well, I decided not to proceed with it.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Strong opening statement, clear academic and career goal, High merit, academic achievement, Practical experience, Why this university and country, skills and strengths, future contribution, professional tone with personal touch

Admission Experience

  • I chose the UOM because of its strong academic reputation, global ranking, and the quality of its economic program. The UK in general has always been a preferred destination for higher studies due to its world-class universities and diverse academic environment. Additionally, I had seniors who were pursuing the same course in the UK, and their insight and experience gave me confidence in my decision.
  • Manchester is a vibrant city, and the career opportunities and the well-structured program made it a great fit. Overall my experience at UOM was both challenging and rewarding.
  • The academic environment was rigorous and while the course was demanding, it pushed me to grow intellectually. Beyond academics, the university offered a diverse range of extracurricular activities and the campus life was lively and inclusive. I truly valued the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and be a part of such an international community.

Class Schedule

9

  • Usual class schedule- weekdays Monday to Friday 2 hours for each lecture. On average 4-6 hours of scheduled lecture per week. Classes generally run from 9 AM to 6 PM. Average class strength is 80-150.
  • Indian students in my course, MSc economics - 5 to 10 % Apart from the regular class, 4 to 5 hours are spent on assignments and self-study.

Faculty

10

  • The faculty members for my course were highly qualified and brought a strong mix of academic and real-world expertise. Many were actively involved in research, and their insights added real depth to the lectures.
  • They were approachable, supportive, and open to discussions beyond the classroom, especially during office hours. We could book 1:1 appointments with them anytime during office hours.

Campus Life

10

  • UOM has a large, well-equipped city campus with facilities including multiple libraries like the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, sports centres like Armitage, and an on-campus health centre.
  • There are over 400 clubs and societies covering academics, culture, and sports. I was based on the oxford road campus which is the heart of student life. Popular events and fests made campus life dynamic and engaging.

Part Time Jobs

  • Most Indian students prefer working part-time in retail stores, hospitality and many more. These roles are popular due to flexible hours and easier availability.
  • Getting a part-time job in Manchester is manageable but can be competitive, especially during the first few months or near semester starts. Being proactive and applying early helps a lot.
  • There are a variety of part-time opportunities available both on and off campus. On campus i worked as a student ambassador, which was a great experience with flexible hours and good exposure and it paid around £13 per hour.
  • Off campus, there are also plenty of opportunities in retail, hospitality, and customer service roles, especially in a student-friendly city like Manchester. On a student visa, we are allowed to work for 20 hours per week in term time.

Placement

3

  • Full-time job opportunities after the course can be quite competitive, especially for international students. Based on my observation and network, around 15% of students secured jobs within six months of graduating. Most students find jobs through online platforms like LinkedIn, indeed university career portal and networking.
  • The average salary range usually falls between £25,000 and £30,000 per year, going up to around £40,000 specially in finance and consulting, while the lowest is £20,000 in entry-level positions.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I found my accommodation through unite student accommodation and stayed in piccadilly Manchester. The process was straightforward, but I'd highly recommend booking early because prices go up quickly as the intake approaches. Since I booked two months before the intake, and my rent was around £800 per month.
