Course Curriculum

10

  • The thermal power and fluid engineering course is a particularly difficult course. It is one of the toughest Mechanical branch courses in the university.
  • Some of the subjects like research methods and experimental methods, that came in the start were taught as basic, non-serious courses but were some of the most important ones. The core course was amazing and well detailed.
  • 3 to 5 hours per day at max. So days of the week can be free too.
  • We had 18 students in the class. I was the only Indian student.

Admission Experience

  • Shortlisted at Cranfield University, Shortlisted in the University of Michigan, and Admitted in the University of Manchester.
  • University of Manchester, Cranfield University, University of Michigan
  • Cambridge, Oxford, NUS Singapore
  • They required a high GRE score. While the University of Manchester can admit you even with a TOEFL score, for the rest you need a high GRE score. I was unable to get the cutoff score.
  • It has the best Thermal and Fluid Engineering program in the UK.
  • You complete your IELTS/TOEFL and GRE, apply for the programme on the university website with an SOP and reference letter.
  • TOEFL/IELTS are enough but GRE is also good to have. 105 plus in TOEFL, 310 plus in GRE.
  • The overall admission experience was very smooth and easy to handle. Challenge was to apply for the VISA and get the TB test done for it.
  • I applied for the September intake, as it was after i finished my bachelor's degree. I did not want to wait too much to start my master's programme.
  • I applied in March, got the results in April, and got my admissions done by July. Deadlines are mostly dynamic but if you apply early, you have a better chance of getting in. All your process will be done before July and by August you must be ready for VISA applications.

Faculty

10

  • The faculty-to-student ratio was 1:18 for each subject and we had a very well thought out structure for teaching. It influenced the course in a positive way.
  • The theoretical aspect of all faculties were excellent but sometimes there was a lack of effort put into teaching the practical part. After the course you should be able to find a job from the skills that you get.
  • I don't know if they helped anyone find a part-time role or a full time role but that did not happen in my case.
  • I loved my Heat Transfer Professor - Dr. Hector Icavidis.

Campus Life

10

  • There are many campuses at the University of Manchester. Each campus teaches different fields. It is spread out throughout Manchester.
  • There are two libraries, one near the main campus and one in the city center. Sports are a little further away and each campus has a medical service.
  • As soon as we get there, we get a Fresher's party in Pangea, and then we have multiple clubs doing multiple parties and events and sports contests throughout the year.
  • You have a club for every single sport that can be played in the university. You get to be on the team and play your favorite sport. Similarly in the other extracurriculars.

Part Time Jobs

  • A very few people get teacher assistant, research assistant or departmental assistant positions. Rarely.
  • They get paid minimum wage per hour.
  • Part-time in student union, cafes in the university, etc.
  • We can only work 20 hours per week on a student VISA.
  • It is difficult to get a job on the campus. Most of the jobs are outside the campus. Mostly in hospitality.
  • Students mostly earn minimum wages in their part-time jobs. There are hardly any options that pay more. It is difficult to secure a part-time job. You can use references from others to get a job. We get flyers; there are forms online and we can also get references for them. You can also try to go into establishments and inquire if there are any roles.

Placement

6

  • As it was the Brexit year, we had a very difficult job market, and very few got offered roles in companies.
  • The average salaries were GBP 35000 for master's students. But it can be GBP 24000 as well in some companies.
  • There is a career help team and two job fairs on the campus during the course and you get to apply for roles during these phases and try to get a job.
  • The experience was very hard for us, as there were very few sponsored roles in the market.
  • All major companies in the UK hire in the university but depends on the job market.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I was in budget accommodation provided by the University. But the services were excellent, the rooms are great, and the space is great. It was a good experience.
  • I don't remember the monthly rent but the final payment was GBP 7000 excluding food facilities.
  • There is very less accommodation so you have to choose fast. Also i had to live in a different room for a few days, as the room allotted to me was under maintenance.
  • Choose the University accommodation even if it's a bit expensive. It's safe, more student-like and helps you get to know more people.
  • My accommodation was 5 km from my campus.

Exams

  • For English we need the TOEFL/IELTS exams. This is a must. If you have GRE/GMAT this will help your resume and also help you with scholarships.
  • We required all the academic documents, statement of purpose, resume, and two letters of recommendation from managers or professors from the past colleges and companies.
  • No, for me there was no interview during the process but for some courses you might have one.

Fees

  • GBP 20000 for the tuition, which was paid in three installments.
  • GBP 7500 for the accommodation. Single bedroom. This was also paid in three installments.
  • I opened an account in Barclays Bank with the help of my student ID. Transferred money from India to that bank and then paid the fees online.
  • The estimated monthly expenses for me were GBP 500

Scholarship

  • No i did not receive any scholarship during my course. At that time i did not even know what scholarships to apply for.
  • My batchmate from Turkey received a fully paid master's from his government.
  • In the batch of 18 we had 4 people on scholarships. Mostly the ones who were from European nations. Asian students tend not to get a lot of scholarships. Mostly due to lack of funds but also due to lack of information.
