What Students Say
Likes
- The thing I loved the most about my uni was the detail and attention used for creating each course work assignment. SUMS made sure that the students use both creative aspects and academic learning for each assignment, which made it very unique and educative. This made creating each assignment and writing the essays, more fun.
- I absolutely loved all of the societies and activities done by the student union. There was something for everyone, be it sports, music, introduced to new cultures or travelling. I participated in a lot of these events and my favourite one was travelling to the peak district over thanksgiving holiday.
- I liked the support system placed for students to help us with anything we may have a issue with.
Dislikes
- To be honest, I do not have much to say about what I dislike as I loved my time in Sheffield and my University. The few aspects that I can think of are:
- We could have had more practical projects and in person activities to supplement our assignments
- The fees is a bit high in my opinion, as I am an international student, and I had to pay a lot more compared to home students.
Course Curriculum
-
My course curriculum was a mix of both, although the theoretical Part took more priority. The most positive aspect of my course was the multicultural environment and creative assignments and the negative aspect of my course can be that it can be little overwhelming among so many new people from different backgrounds.I had around 2 lectures and 2-3 seminars each day starting at 9AM in the morning and usually lasting till 4pm. As I have personally not experienced anything similar to this, I cannot answer it.
-
On an average, we had around 100-150 students during common lectures and 10-15, students during seminars.
-
Around 5-8 including me as the nature of the course was quite multicultural. We had students from many countries with Chinese being the majority.
-
We had 1-2 lecturers per module and 8-10 seminar leaders during each semester. The higher number of seminar leaders ensured that each student gets to work in a smaller group to focus more on their individual and group projects while ensuring interaction and teamwork.
-
Given the theoretical nature of my course, I would say that teaching methodology was quite good, although the course lacked some practical teaching, which could be more useful in the long run and to secure job. But this was compensated with the University services and career team. Each semester, we had a dedicated lecture to develop career skills and enhance our CV further.
Admission Experience
-
I applied to a total of 8 Russell group universities.
1. University of Sheffield - Confirmed Admission (accepted)
2. University of Leeds - Confirmed Admission
3. University of Southampton - Confirmed Admission
4. University of Birmingham - Confirmed Admission
5. Strathclyde Business School - Confirmed Admission
6. University of Exeter - Confirmed Admission
7. University of York - Confirmed Admission
8. Newcastle University- Confirmed Admission - I chose University of Sheffield over the other universities was due to 2 reasons. First was that I really liked the course here and it was my top two choices in the entire list. Second reason was mostly the timing of the offer. This was the first offer. I received and being high up on my preference list, I decided not to extend my decision period for the other offer and accept it. Most of the other universities confirmed my offer quite late.
- I applied to the September 2023 intake pursue my masters right after completing my bachelors. The admission process was quite smooth and quick. I applied to the university in December and received my offer by the third week of January. Initially, I was provided a conditional offer as I was still completing my bachelors and I received an unconditional offer and CAS within a week of submitting my graduation transcript.
Faculty
- I absolutely admire our program director Lien Monkhouse.
- She is an absolute sweetheart and great inspiration to international students. From the day one, she has been extremely helpful and receptive to student feedbacks, trying to make our experience with the course the very best.
- Every single time I had an issue or query, she has helped me solve it in the most cheerful way.
Campus Life
- As the university of Sheffield is a city campus, all of the departments are spread over throughout the city, and I don't know the exact count of the total number of campus.
- We had two libraries, one massive sports centre with multiple playing grounds, career guidance department assisting students with their applications, medical services (UHS) and a student union with numerous multicultural experiences and canteen.
- The most popular event of UoS is Roar which is a sports event.
- The student union has a lot of options for different kind of extra curricular activities like sports, travelling to different places, reading club, gaming club, et cetera. The one I found most interesting was GIAG(give it a go) where you can try a lot of different activities like celebrating a festival or trying out a sport for the first time.
Part Time Jobs
-
I can't answer this as I'm not aware about the topic.
-
UoS has a lot of part-time roles for students and the usual paid range is 12-16 GBP per hour.
-
For international students, it is the government allowance of 20 hours.
-
I see quite easy as I have seen my friends secure it quite smoothly.
-
Private organisations usually pay the national wage for most jobs. Quite easy as there are multiple vacancies available at each time.To search for job openings platforms like indeed, University career service and LinkedIn are quite useful. One thing to keep in mind is that the CV of the student needs to be very professional and to the point.
Placement
- I don't know the exact percentage, but most of the students can secure employment during course and within six months post completion if they have properly planned out their application timeline.
- The average salary range for fresher rule start from 20k- 29k GBP yearly for freshers and more for experienced students
- The most common methods are networking, internships, and online job portals like LinkedIn and indeed.
- I don't know much about the topic, so I can't answer it.
- The major companies are Deloitte, PWC, Barclays, HSBC and regional start-ups.UoS also actively hires students for full-time roles.
Accommodation
- I used an online platform suggested by my counsellor to book my Accommodation.
- My rent per week was 104 pounds and it included access to laundry machines(paid), a common room with games and Kitchen, and en-suite room(with private bathroom) and a shared kitchen.
- I did not face any challenge to secure my Accommodation as it was quite an easy process
- My only recommendation would be to check the walking distance from your Accommodation to your department building as that makes a huge difference in time management.
- My Accommodation was within a 15 minute walking distance from my department building and write in the centre of University campus. Most of the Indian students state in the neighbourhood under different accommodations.
Exams
- As I opted for a MSc degree, I had to appear for IELTS only. The documents required to complete the admission process in my university were a SOP, LOR by references, academic result transcripts and predicted grade for undergraduate degree(as I was still studying).
- For people with industrial experience, you would required to submit a LOR from your manager or direct supervisor and CV as well.
Fees
-
Full fees- £28700. It can be paid completely or in two halves. The first portion was charged before starting the course, and the second portion can be paid in January.
-
The deposit fee of 1000 was deducted from the first half. And for the monthly expenses, I spent around £104/week on rent and around £400 on groceries and other expenses. My travelling cost was zero as I travelled to most places by walkiNG.
Scholarship
-
25% on full fees based on merit. Provided to 125 international students. The other scholarships were mostly government based from different nations. I personally did not receive the scholarship, but the scholarship amount for my course was around £2500.
-
The eligibility criteria for the merit base scholarship was academic record, extracurricular and the quality of essay submitted for the application.
-
In the essay, University asked a lot about our vision, plans for future and the course, goal with the scholarship amount (and why we deserve it) and the contributions we can meet towards university with our skills.
