Course Curriculum

10

  • The course curriculum was moderately difficult, with equal focus on both theoretical and practical.
  • The assessments are carefully designed by professors, and good guidance is provided.
  • The positive aspect of the course was the in-depth coverage of topics. However, due to the limitation of time, the diversity of the subject could not be covered. In my batch of 25 students, there were 7 Indian students.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to 10 universities and got accepted into seven universities. I did miss the deadlines of a few universities. I received admission to the University of Surrey, Nottingham, Leeds, Strathclyde, and the University of Sheffield. I received a rejection from The University of Warwick. I received a rejection because I was late in sending the application, and the vacancy for the applied course was filled.

  • My course is unique. Whilst in India, I was already working as an AI engineer, and my next goal was to find a good application domain for AI. The University of Sheffield was the only university to have a course which integrates AI with cybersecurity. Even the University of Surrey had a course integrating AI with 5G. Though I got accepted into both of these universities, I chose Sheffield because of its better QS global ranking. (93rd in 2021) and it belonged to the Russel Group. The overall admission process was fairly simple. I had to submit an LOR, an SOP and my IELTS score.

  • I applied for the September 2021 intake. The only factor that influenced my decision was the unique course offering and its structure. The admission process did not take a very long time. I received a decision within 2 weeks. The application process includes: Sending SOP and LOR, sending my IELTS results, receive unconditional offer letter from the university and finally receive CAS from the university.

Faculty

10

  • 6 faculty members and 8 teaching assistants were involved in my batch which had 25 - 30 students.
  • The course content and teaching approach are sufficient to prepare for securing a job in the field.
  • Faculty members actively help students to connect with potential employers.
  • My professor Dr Prosanta Gope hired me for a research project which not only helped me get a job while I was studying but also, improved my CV.

Campus Life

10

  • The university does not have a confined building. The epicentre of the university is in and around the Students Union where most of the students like to hangout. Alongside there are Muti-discipline library, cafes and a host of clubs and restaurants in the same area.
  • Students will find lots of options in the West Street and City Centre region.
  • The major campus festivals are the ball room festival and freshers with other events happening with sports as well.

Part Time Jobs

  • Students with good academic or professional backgrounds can almost immediately secure TA and RA jobs. Having a good relationship with mentors/faculty members also helps in networking. For RA the pay starts with grade 6 (without PhD) and grade 7 (with PhD). Other on-campus jobs includes jobs in the students union, university bars and cafes.

  • For Indian students, the maximum hours as per the visa is 20 hours per week. Securing part time jobs are very easy. Even if students do not get on-campus jobs, there are lots of part time jobs available in Sheffield.

  • The minimum wage is 7£ per hour, however, students can earn an average of 9 to 10£ per hour which increases during the holiday seasons. It is very easy for students to secure a part time job either on capus or off campus.

  • There are lots of apps where students can setup an account, get verified and start applying for jobs. The process is easy, setup account, get verifies, start applying for jobs which are suitable. There are also jobs for students which are zero contract hours with the flexibility given to students to not commit during the exam period.

Placement

10

  • Within 6 months is doable but not easy. It depends on a lot of factors like: does the student wants sponsorship, does the student wants a specific job type or is flexible, does the student has got relevant experience for the job they are applying to and so on.
  • It's a bit of a hustle but eventually students find their way.
  • There are job fairs held by the university as well as expos are held in London and Manchester every year. Students can meet their potential employers in these events

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • My friend helped me find accommodation. The monthly rent was 500£ with all facilities included.
  • Whilst being a student, you are exempted from paying council tax. There were no major challenges to booking student accommodation because Sheffield is a student-friendly city.
  • The accommodation is 10 minutes walk from the university. Most of the Indian students stay in university accommodations together.

Exams

  • IELTS is required. Documents that are required are mark sheets/transcripts of 10th, 12th and undergraduate semester transcripts and IELTS. Along with these, a Letter of recommendation and statement of purpose are required.
  • No interview is there in the application process.
  • There is not fixed format for SOP, however, it is beneficial to validate it from someone and keep it formal.

Fees

  • My tuition fee was 26000£ for a year. Sheffield being one of the cheapest and most affordable cities for students, my monthly expenditure was roughly around 600-700£.
  • Students can avail of student discounts literally everywhere in the city upon presenting their university ID card.
  • My rent is 500£ per month. For transportation I use tram service and you can apply for monthly pass which costs 53£ per month.

Scholarship

  • We received a scholarship of 2500£ on the tuition fees.
  • The university was also flexible in providing financial support to students facing issues with their finances.
  • Most of the students in my batch received scholarships.
  • On an average atleast 70% of students can receive scholarships. The scholarship given are with respect to the course and has a deadline to apply.
