What Students Say?
Dislikes
- The modules were not properly balanced for both the semester, it was inconsistently structured.
- In the lectures, there were only one way of teaching and that is through presentation, although lab activities were there but not at an extent.
I chose this university because of multiple factors: - The QS ranking of the University of Sheffield was among the top 20 in Europe in 2021 and the ranking has gone up since. - It has the best student union all over the UK and it is still ranked as the best to this date. - Given the inflation rate and recession in the US, Europe is considered to be the next tech giant target in terms of IT infrastructure and software technical advancement in the employability domain as the big tech giants are building up their main headquarters in Ireland and the UK region. - The University of Sheffield's reputation in the overall European region is well placed and alumni of the university are working all over in big companies as well as small start-ups across the globe, hence alumni network is very strong at the University of Sheffield.
Course Curriculum
I have chosen 'Advanced Computer Science' which was decent overall. It was well-updated with the industry standards but not well-curated in terms of teaching methods. But, there was no industrial exposure in the course.
Exams
- Although exams like GMAT, and GRE were considered but not mandatory to get admission into the University. However, a foreign student who comes from non-English speaking countries has to show proof of their academics in English. For which:- Exams like TOEFL, and IELTS were mandatory with certain criteria. My score in IELTS:- 7.5 - 10th - 7.4 (Aravali International School); 12th - 79% (Aravali International School); UG - 70% (Dr K N Modi Institute of Engineering and Technology) PG - 70% (University of Sheffield) - Requirements: I have submitted a SoP, 2 LoRs (Got it from my professor at UG) and my resume (it was optional). SoP is the main document and it should infer your purpose during the course and what you want to achieve after the course ends. I had not given any interviews, but it was mandated by the University policy that if they needed to take an interview, they would be informed but it was not mandatory. A well-written SoP can save you from giving the interview.
Placement
In terms of career placement in the UK or Ireland, there is no in-campus placement service for higher degree students (MSc, post-graduation, etc). There is just a career placement service which helps you tailor your resume, and provides resources or links from where you can apply but an individual has to apply for jobs through portals and it's completely on their own to get a job, universities can offer resume support, what jobs to look for, give opportunities for networking.
Fees
24,850 in Pound Sterling (GBP) from which I got a scholarship of 4,500 GBP. Payment can be done at once or in two terms (half for one semester and the other half in the last semester), One can pay through a credit/debit card, through bank loans, through NBFC, etc. University policies are flexible in the payment prospect.
Faculty
There were less number of faculties w.r.t the students in the classroom. For ex:- for the data science course, there were around 60+ students and because of a lack of faculty, there were lots of postpone or dismissals of classes. Also, during my dissertation, I was held in a group of 3 members and we had only one supervisor, which resulted in - I was not able to clear my doubts because of the supervisor's unavailability. One good thing - each student is assigned a mentor at the start of the course, who can help clear all doubts and take complaints from the student.
Campus Life
- There is not a particular campus like we have in India. - There were university buildings and departments scattered all over the place (Sheffield), so one has to travel a lot to go from department to department. - There were plenty of Libraries scattered around the city, and the infra of the library is well structured. I spend two to three days sometimes in the library continuously without going to my accommodation. - In terms of societies, there were plenty including national societies w.r.t to foreign societies but memberships come at a cost (monthly and yearly basis) - There is also an option to become a student ambassador at the start of the course in your department which is very helpful, it gives a student a chance to interact and be close to faculties throughout the year, which itself is a great learning experience.
Hostel
I used to live at Sheffield3 (Student Roost). It was en-suite rooms with shared kitchens (3bhk, 4bhk, 5bhk), every student accommodation in the country shared the same infra model. I used to pay an average of 461 pounds/month.There are trams available, buses available, also there are discounts on public transport if you have a valid student ID.
