Colleges Where I Was Accepted
Reason for choosing my college
- I chose sheffield because of its course structure, which met my academic expectations and I also wanted to live in a quiet environment with affordable prices, which were the criteria fulfilled by sheffield hence the University of Sheffield.
Colleges Where I Was Rejected
Reason for Rejection
- I got accepted to every college I applied to. But the acceptance letter for Manchester came very late. I had already applied for my visa, which mentions the university I am going to. If it had come earlier, I would have gone for it, as it has a better ranking.

Tips to enhance your application
- To strengthen your document, start with clear motivation for your field.
- Highlight relevant academic and professional experience, skills and achievements.
- Explain why that university fits your goal.
- Be clear and concise.
Admission Experience
- I Choose the UK for their reputed and quality education. Also, the term of study is one year compared to other countries that have two years of master's. The University of sheffield had a good ranking; it was among the top 100 universities and the course structure provided by the university was something i was looking for in a master's.
Class Schedule
- We had 2 classes for every module each week. One theoretical and one practical. Each class used to be 2 hrs.
- Every day we used to have 2 classes; hence, we used to be at the university for 4 hours. Apart from that, I used to spend a few more hours in the library for personal study. The strength of the class was 160 students, 50% of whom were Indians.
Faculty
- Faculty to student ratio was pretty good, which helped faculty to give personalized attention to students. Each faculty member was allocated 4 students for dissertation.
- Some faculty whom I connected with were Dr. Abdullah Yaghi, Dr. Suvodeep Mazumdar, Dr. Denis Newman Griffin, Dr. Morgan Harvey, and Dr. Laura Sbaffi.
- Faculties did help in giving references for jobs.
Campus Life
- Our university has a city campus so all different departments are spread across sheffield city. My department was based in a building called The wave but we also had lectures in the Diamond building.
- We have two main libraries called the Western bank library and the Information commons. There always used to be some or other event going on around the student union building. We had over 500 clubs for extracurricular activities.
Part Time Jobs
- According to me, most Indians prefer to work in warehouses, shops and schools. Pay per hour is whatever minimum wage is at the moment. Pay can also be more if you have been working there for a long time and you have gained a higher position.
- Part-time jobs can be found on linkedin, indeed or just by googling. Every job has a different process to apply for. Common steps if applying online are just filling out the application form and submitting your cv.
- I did part-time work both on and off campus. I was the student ambassador for Data science course, where I helped prospective students clarify their doubts by email. We also used to host open houses where we used to talk to students and help them understand what they are for in the course.
- I also worked as a customer service agent for one month and then i worked as Teaching Assistant at a school for special kids.
Placement
- At the moment, getting a full-time job opportunity is becoming difficult due to the economic conditions in the world.
- For my batch, only 20% of people have managed to get a job and with graduate visas on the verge of expiring, even students with jobs are struggling to get sponsorship. For a data science graduate, the average starting salary should be around 28K GBP but again, it depends.
Accommodation
- I searched for accommodation through an online platform called amber students. There you can compare the prices, locations, and sizes of the houses and decide which one fits your needs. You can also chat with them and tell them your preference and they can sort some places for you.
- Sheffield being a hilly area, there are so many ups and downs, so I preferred to get a place near my uni building, which made commuting easier.
