Postgraduate applications carry no application fee; UCAS charges £27.50 (around INR 3,519).

University of Southampton admissions are handled by the university’s Admissions Office for postgraduate taught programmes and via UCAS for undergraduate courses, with UG entry needing Class XII at 75% from major Indian boards and PG entry generally requiring a Bachelor’s degree at 55–70% depending on the programme tier.

  • Next live deadline (September 2026 PG primary intake): select MSc Finance variants close 26 September 2026; MSc Computer Science, AI, Finance, and MBA already closed on 19 August 2026 for that intake.
  • Base tuition and application fee: PG base tuition ranges from £24,800 to £36,300 (around INR 31.73 Lakhs to INR 46.45 Lakhs); PG applications carry no application fee, while UG via UCAS charges £27.50 (around INR 3,519).
  • Eligibility floor: UG needs Class XII at 75% with IELTS 6.5 overall (6.0 each band); PG needs a Bachelor’s at 55–70% depending on tier with the same IELTS 6.5 minimum.
  • Acceptance rate: estimated at 80–85% based on Russell Group intake patterns; the university does not publish an official institutional figure.

Popular Indian-student choices at University of Southampton include MSc Computer Science, MSc Artificial Intelligence, and MSc Finance, with Indian applicants consistently rating the research-led teaching in engineering, computing, and business faculties, and citing the Russell Group brand as a strong signal for graduate employers back home.

Planning note: Southampton’s PG cycle is not fixed rounds — it opens roughly 11 months before intake and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the international deadline. Indian applicants should file at least 4–5 months before the deadline to leave room for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter and UK Student visa processing.

University of Southampton Eligibility for Indian Students

Southampton evaluates Indian applicants using a tiered system that recognises CBSE, CISCE, and major state boards for Class XII, and Indian Bachelor’s degrees against three PG tiers based on the strength of the awarding university. Both academic and English requirements are non-negotiable for CAS issuance.

  • UG general entry: Class XII at 75% from CBSE, CISCE, or approved metro state boards.
  • PG Tier 1 (top-tier Indian institutions): First class 65%, 2:1 equivalent 60%, 2:2 equivalent 55%.
  • PG Tier 2 (mid-tier Indian institutions): First class 70%, 2:1 equivalent 65%, 2:2 equivalent 60%.
  • PG Tier 3 (other recognised Indian institutions): First class 75%, 2:1 equivalent 70%, 2:2 equivalent 65%.

English proficiency is graded in bands. Most master’s and UG programmes require Band C — IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component, per the official English language requirements page. Accepted tests and minimums for Band C:

TestOverall MinimumSub-score Minimum
IELTS Academic / UKVI6.56.0 in each

PTE Academic6260 in each
Duolingo English Test120110 in each sub-score

Southampton IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Southampton allows a medium-of-instruction (MOI) waiver that most Indian applicants qualify for. If you completed the final four years of schooling in English at a CBSE, CISCE, or comparable board and score at least 70% in Class XII English, Southampton accepts this in place of IELTS/TOEFL/PTE for Band C entry. A written attestation from the school confirming the medium of instruction is required alongside your Class XII mark sheet. The waiver applies to postgraduate taught programmes at Band C; pre-sessional English pathways are available if you fall short of the direct route.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Southampton India page for your chosen programme before applying.

University of Southampton UG Programs and Fees

Undergraduate applications for University of Southampton route through UCAS, the UK’s central admissions body. The UCAS 2027 cycle opened in September 2026, and the equal consideration deadline for Indian applicants is Wednesday, 14 January 2027. Late applications may be considered until 30 June 2027 where places remain.

University of Southampton MBA Admissions

The Southampton MBA is a 1-year full-time programme at Southampton Business School. Entry requires a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree (equivalent to 55% Tier 1), a minimum of three years of professional work experience, and an interview stage conducted online for international applicants after initial shortlisting on academic and CV strength.

Southampton MBA Eligibility Snapshot

  • Academic: 2:2 Bachelor’s (equivalent to 55% from a Tier 1 Indian university).
  • Work experience: minimum 3 years of full-time post-graduation professional experience.
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band; MOI waiver applies to Indian applicants who qualify.
  • Interview: shortlisted candidates are invited to a competency-based interview via video call.
  • GMAT/GRE: not compulsory but a strong score strengthens borderline cases.

Southampton MBA Fees and Funding

Base tuition for the September 2026 MBA cohort is £35,600 (around INR 45.55 Lakhs). MBA-specific scholarships and any dean’s awards for Indian students sit on the dedicated Scholarships page.

Reality check: Southampton MBA is aimed at mid-career professionals with clear management potential — Indian applicants with 2:2 academics but 5+ years of managerial experience are viewed more favourably than fresh 2:1 graduates without work history.

Note: Programme-specific entry, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums above. Confirm on the official University of Southampton MBA page before applying.

University of Southampton PhD Admissions

Southampton is a research-intensive Russell Group institution and admits PhD candidates through direct applications to the relevant faculty. Applications are open year-round, though internally funded studentships align to fixed calls each academic year.

Southampton PhD Application Steps

  • Step 1: Identify a supervisor whose research interests align with your proposal.
  • Step 2: Submit a research proposal (2,000–3,000 words) alongside your online application.
  • Step 3: Attend an academic interview if shortlisted, either in person or online.
  • Step 4: Receive offer; secure funding via studentship, external scholarship, or self-funding.

Southampton PhD Stipend for Indian Students

UKRI-aligned funded studentships at Southampton pay a tax-free stipend of £19,237 (around INR 24.61 Lakhs) for the 2026–27 academic year, along with full tuition coverage for four years for successful candidates. Additional funding sits on the scholarships page.

Planning note: Most Southampton PhD funding rounds close between January and March each year for September starts — Indian applicants should have their proposal drafted and supervisor contact confirmed by early December.

Note: PhD entry requirements, stipends, and intake calls may differ by faculty. Confirm on the official Southampton PhD funding page before submitting.

University of Southampton Application Process

Postgraduate applicants apply directly on the Southampton online application portal. Undergraduate applicants go through UCAS. Both use a single central form for multiple choices, but the payment and reference mechanics differ.

  1. PG applicants — Register: Create a login on Southampton’s applicant portal. UG applicants register on the UCAS platform for the 2027 cycle (opened September 2026).
  2. Fill personal and academic details: Enter Class XII, Bachelor’s, and any Master’s marks with predicted or final grades. Indian percentage grades are directly accepted.
  3. Upload documents: Attach transcripts, degree certificate, English score, CV, personal statement, and any programme-specific supporting material.
  4. Add references: Two academic references for master’s; one academic plus one professional reference for MBA.
  5. Application fee (PG): No application fee for postgraduate direct applications. UG UCAS applicants pay £27.50 (around INR 3,519) on the UCAS portal for a multi-choice application.
  6. Submit and track: Monitor status via the applicant portal. PG decisions typically issue within 6–8 weeks; UCAS updates roll through spring 2027.
  7. Accept and pay deposit: On unconditional offer, pay the £2,000 (around INR 2.56 Lakhs) tuition deposit within the stated window to trigger CAS issuance for the UK Student visa.

Southampton Admission Decisions Timeline

  • Offer letter: issued 6–8 weeks after a complete PG application; UCAS UG decisions typically issue by end of March 2027 for on-time applicants.
  • Offer conditions: commonly pending final transcripts, English score, and deposit payment.
  • Acceptance deadline: firm reply typically 4–6 weeks after offer; UCAS UG applicants respond within their UCAS-set window.
  • Deferral policy: one-year deferral usually permitted for PG on written request, subject to programme approval.

University of Southampton Documents Required

Southampton uses a consolidated document set for Indian PG and UG applicants. All non-English documents must include certified English translations. Prepare scanned PDFs before starting the application to avoid last-minute delays.

  • Passport bio page: valid for the entire duration of study.
  • Class XII mark sheet and pass certificate: required for both UG and PG.
  • Class X mark sheet: required for UG applicants; recommended for PG.
  • Bachelor’s transcripts (all semesters or final consolidated): for PG applicants.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate or provisional letter: for graduated PG applicants.
  • Personal statement or statement of purpose: 500–1,000 words tailored to the programme.
  • Two references: academic for master’s, academic plus professional for MBA and PhD.
  • English test score report: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE, DET, or Cambridge; MOI attestation if using the waiver.
  • CV or resume: mandatory for MBA and PhD; recommended for other master’s.
  • Work experience letters: required for MBA; recommended for management master’s.
  • Research proposal: 2,000–3,000 words for PhD applicants.

University of Southampton Acceptance Rate

The University of Southampton does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Based on Russell Group intake patterns and the university’s competitive but non-selective admissions approach across most master’s, the offer rate is estimated at 80–85% for applicants who meet the stated eligibility floor.

Southampton Programme-Level Selectivity

Selectivity varies by programme. Competitive courses — MSc Computer Science, MSc AI, MSc Data Science, MSc Finance, and the MBA — receive far more applications than places, so effective admit rates for those programmes sit well below the institutional average. Meeting the stated minimum does not guarantee an offer for these courses; strong academic transcripts, well-articulated statements of purpose, and (for MBA) work experience quality matter.

How Indian Applicants Improve Their Odds

Apply early in the cycle before quotas fill, exceed the tier-relevant Bachelor’s percentage by 3–5 points where possible, and back the statement of purpose with programme-specific evidence — a coding portfolio for CS/AI, quantitative coursework for Finance, or research alignment for PhD. Southampton’s ranking overview — including its top-100 QS position and top-15 UK standing — signals to reviewers that its filters are meaningful even at higher offer volumes.

Insider note: Southampton’s admissions team weighs Indian institutional tier heavily — a Tier 1 Bachelor’s at 65% often reads as favourably as a Tier 3 Bachelor’s at 75%, so pick the tier match on the India equivalency page carefully before self-assessing.

UK Student Visa for University of Southampton Applicants

Indian students at Southampton study on the UK Student Route visa (Student visa, previously Tier 4). Once you accept an unconditional offer and pay the tuition deposit, Southampton issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) — a 14-digit reference you use in your visa application. Apply online at gov.uk up to six months before your programme start date.

Financial evidence must show enough to cover 9 months of maintenance at £1,483 (around INR 1.90 Lakhs) per month for London and £1,136 (around INR 1.45 Lakhs) per month for Southampton (outside London), held in your name or a parent’s account for at least 28 consecutive days. You also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — £776 (around INR 99,289) per year of study — and the visa application fee of £524 (around INR 67,046) from outside the UK. After arrival, collect your Biometric Residence Permit within 10 days and register with a local GP.

2026 update: UK Student visa applicants from India must now show credibility interview readiness — the UKVI may ask about programme choice, funding, and post-study plans; align these with the CAS letter details to avoid refusals under paragraph 320(11).

University of Southampton Tips and Application Checklist

The following combined tips and timeline steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Southampton — treat them as a sequenced playbook rather than a generic checklist.

  • Match your Indian institution to the correct tier: Southampton’s tiered PG entry means the same 65% can be a pass or a fail depending on where you graduated.
  • File 5 months before deadline: submit by mid-March for a September intake — Indian applicants who file in July face rejections purely on space.
  • Book IELTS by December of the previous year: or claim the MOI waiver early if your Class XII English is 70%+ and your school confirms in writing.
  • Line up references in November: academic referees at Indian universities take 3–4 weeks to respond — give them the programme name and deadline upfront.
  • Draft your statement around one signature strength: Southampton reviewers reward specificity — one strong research or industry project reads better than a broad interests list.
  • Pay the £2,000 (around INR 2.56 Lakhs) deposit within the offer window: late payment delays CAS and pushes visa timelines into the risky June–August peak.
  • Apply for the visa by mid-June: allow 4–6 weeks including biometrics; London visa centre slots tighten from July.
  • Confirm accommodation before CAS acceptance: Southampton guarantees accommodation for first-year PG students who accept by the stated date — miss it and you fall to private letting.

Southampton admissions reward Indian applicants who file early, pick the correct tier on the India equivalency page, and back their eligibility with clean supporting documents. The MOI waiver removes one hurdle for many CBSE and ISC students, while the September 2027 cycle for PG opens from October 2026 — Indian students planning ahead should have their transcripts, references, and statement of purpose drafted before the year-end.

Scholarship

  • I received a scholarship called 'Merit Scholarships for International Students' of 3000 GBP. A few of my batchmates received 5000 GBP, as they had better grades in their undergrad.
  • The typical award amount ranges from 1000 GBP to 8000 GBP. And the scholarship depends on the faculty and course. You do not need to apply for it; you get awarded automatically based on your academics.

Scholarship

  • Scholarships for the MBA program at Southampton are primarily awarded based on professional experience. Candidates with greater work experience tend to have enhanced prospects of receiving a tuition fee reduction. Although I did not obtain a scholarship, I am aware that approximately 15 out of 62 students in my cohort were successful in securing one.
  • The scholarship amounts varied between £2,000 and £7,000, which were subtracted from the overall tuition fees. The competition for these scholarships is significant, and possessing substantial work experience, demonstrated leadership abilities, and a compelling application can significantly bolster your chances. Additionally, some students were able to obtain external funding or sponsorship from their employers.

Scholarship

  • For my course, every Indian/Overseas student gets GBP 8000 as a scholarship. More can be availed if you fit into the required category. The name is Dean's Scholarship for Overseas Students.
  • I too, received GBP 8000 as the scholarship amount.
  • Similar to me, my batchmates received the same amount. I had friends in other couses (MSc in Operational Research) who received GBP 3000 and my friends in MSc Computer Science didn't receive any.
  • As I mentioned, every Overseas student can get the scholarship as long as it's mentioned in their course prospectus.

  • Total 25 students were awarded the scholarship across all Humanities departments. There were several other scholarships available for other subjects, especially STEM.
