What Students Say
Likes
- Being from India, I enjoyed the exposure UK university has.
- The courses were prepared according to the industry standards which helps us to stay updated and learn
- The student accommodation facility was very helpful since it covered most of the student expenses in a foreign country. Ex: transportation, laundry
Dislikes
- The course assignments were a little too advanced. If you are a fresher from india and want to pursue cybersecurity, the assignments might be a little too tricky for you to figure out from the get go.
- While the campus itself has many ethnicities studying, my course had only 2 ethnicities.
- Not many career fairs were happening frequently. It happened for 2 consecutive days when i was studying and then none.
Course Curriculum
- The course itself was not difficult. The subjects were taught in undergrad which was easy to follow. The real challenge is the assignments and the examination. It was real world applications and problems which needed solution.
- The curriculum was a mix of theory and practical, 50:50. The course covered vast topics in cybersecurity ranging from basics to advanced forensics. We usually have max 2-3 classes scheduled per day each 1 hour. Labs are 2.5 hours. Strength was 20 and half of them were Indians.
Admission Experience
-
I applied to 4 universities in total.
University of Southampton- Got Admitted. Received confirmed admission from university of Southampton..
Lancaster University-Got Admitted.Received confirmed admission from Lancaster University.
University of Birmingham- Got admitted. Received confirmed admission from the University of Birmingham.
University of Edinburgh- Rejected. In my opinion, it is because of my Bachelor's score being not enough. -
Reason to Choose:-
1. UoS is one of the Russell Group Universities.
2. One of the top 5 universities for Cybersecurity
3. 1.5 hour train ride from Southampton to London
4. Fairly warmer climatic conditions compared to the rest of the UK. - Admission process: I applied via the university website and the application cost is INR 5000. I got my admission 3 days after the application. Since I submitted all my documents in the application process, i got an unconditional offer. After the offer i was asked to create an account with the college.
- The university arranged a meet-up for the admission holders in main parts of india. Then I selected the accommodation (if we are opting for uni accommodation). The university then sent me the CAS code which was for applying for a visa.I applied for visa in july and received it 3 weeks later. I paid the first term fees. I wrote IELTS for this admission. The eligibility criteria was 6.0 and above band. The overall experience was very smooth and can easily be followed with.
- I applied for the 2023 Winter Intake. I wanted to study abroad for a long time so i gave it a shot. I applied for winter admission since that intake has many courses and the admission of students in that period of time in the UK is high. The admission process took 3 days for me. From filling out the application and receiving the offer. I applied in Feb first week and received the offer in the same week.
Faculty
- Faculty to student ratio is 1:35. This does not affect the quality or the interaction since the meeting with the professors were scheduled and they are available to take your queries.
- The teaching was interactive and fun gaining knowledge and getting mesmerised. The faculty members assist you in finding part time job/full time. The university has a separate application where alumni and current student connect for job opportunities. I admire my Foundations of Cybersecurity professor Mr. Anneliio.
Campus Life
- My university has 9 campuses in total. Five in Southampton( Highfield campus, Avenue campus, Boldrewood campus, University Hospital Southampton, Waterfront campus, City Center campus, Winchester campus)one in Winchester, and two international branches in Malaysia and India.
- The university has a library, Gym, Sports hall, Swimming area, a NHS hospital, Clubs and societies etc. The university has many SUSU events throughout the year.
Part Time Jobs
- Only PHD candidates can secure TA,RA and DA positions. They are paid the minimum wage salary i.e. hourly salary in the UK standards. The students can apply for student ambassador , cafe assistant, store assistant, library assistant, open day volunteers, etc. They are all paid minimum hourly wages without fail. We can work upto 20 hours per week on student visa. It is quite difficult to secure a part time job on campus.
- The indian students also get paid the minimum hourly wages. This is £12.21 as per today. The students can get part time in the city quite easily with constant application. We can apply for part time via linked or through the company website in the career section. The process is quite simple. Apply with your Cv, You will get called for an interview and if selected you will be offered a role.
Placement
- Around 20-30% students got placed in my batch within 6 months. The average salary range is from £30000-£45000. The students can find jobs through social job platforms like linkedin, Indeed, Reed.co.uk etc and also through alumni network.
- The placement of my batch students were like any other students. they applied via the company website through the career section. All Big4, telecommunications , Banking sectors hire people from cybersecurity backgrounds.
Accommodation
- I opted for university accommodation- Wessex Lane Halls. I found it though the university website. I opted for a standard room which was £128 per week.
- This is one of the six rooms in a flat. You have a common kitchen, dining, and washroom area. Your room will be equipped with a wash basin, cot, study table, chair, heater, cupboard, storage facilities.
- Finding my accommodation was pretty smooth and straightforward. opt for student accommodation confidently and it wont disappoint you. The accommodation is very safe too. The accommodation is a 20-minute-walk and 5-minute-bus ride far.
Exams
- IELTS was the required exam for my course. The band requirement is 6.5 and above overall. The documents required are Statement of Purpose, Letter of recommendation- 1, and your CV.
- In addition to that all your school and undergraduate documents were required. No Interview was not held for my admission , though it was mentioned that they would need it in case they need to test your skills in English.
Fees
- The fees were £29852. In addition to that my accommodation fees were £512 per month. We can pay the tuition fees in three installments. One in October, One in January, One in April.
- The accommodation fees can also be paid in the same manner. My laundry, electricity ,and transportation in the city were covered in my accommodation fees and i felt it was very useful. Monthly expenses were only for your groceries and occasional recreation.
- Groceries for a month may range from £40-50, given that you take some Indian dry spices and packaged food from india. eg: Maggi, Spice powders, Dry fruits. Recreational expenses can also range from £50-100 depending on the person.
Scholarship
- There were no scholarships for my course and I didn't receive any scholarships. I did not receive any award amount for scholarships. None of my batchmates from my department were offered a scholarship or any form of financial aid. But, many of the students from the Business department received scholarships.
- Students from Business Analytics and management Science department , Data and Decision Science department received scholarship amount ranging from £5000-£8000.
