Northumbria University admissions run twice a year, with September as the main intake and a smaller January cycle. Indian applicants apply directly for postgraduate courses, or through UCAS for undergraduate entry. Class XII at 65 percent or higher meets the UG entry floor. A Bachelor’s at 55 to 60 percent (a UK 2:2 or 2:1 pass) meets the standard master’s floor.
- Next live deadline: January 2027 postgraduate intake closes on 30 November 2026 for direct online applications.
- Base tuition and application fee: PG classroom courses start at GBP 19,850 (around INR 25.70 Lakhs). UCAS application fee is GBP 34.50 (around INR 4,466) for UG. Direct PG entry has no application fee.
- Eligibility floor: Class XII at 65 percent with IELTS 6.0 for UG. Bachelor’s at 55 to 60 percent with IELTS 6.5 for standard PG.
- Acceptance rate: estimated at 55 to 65 percent, based on Indian-cohort intake patterns. The university does not publish an official institutional figure.
Popular Indian-applicant picks include the MSc Data Science, MSc Business with Business Analytics, and MSc International Project Management, alongside the flagship MBA at Newcastle Business School. Peer reviews from Indian students on the Northumbria University overview page highlight strong tutor support and manageable Newcastle living costs against London.

Northumbria University Application Deadlines for Indian Students
Northumbria’s international applications feed two annual intake cycles. Undergraduate entry runs through UCAS on a fixed calendar. Postgraduate direct applications are rolling, but each intake carries a firm closing date for CAS issuance and tuition deposits. All dates below come from the official Northumbria admissions and key dates page.
Northumbria’s primary intake for Indian students is September, with most programs opening in that cycle.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sept 2027 (Primary intake) | UG (UCAS route) | 1 September 2026 | 13 January 2027 | GBP 34.50 (INR 4,466) | UCAS |
| January 2027 | PG (Direct) | Open now (rolling) | 30 November 2026 | No fee | Northumbria applicant portal |
For the January 2027 PG intake, a tuition deposit of GBP 5,500 (around INR 7.12 Lakhs) must clear by 13 December 2026. The CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, the sponsor letter your UK Student Visa application needs) is issued after both application and deposit clear, with a CAS request deadline of 16 December 2026. Oxbridge-track UCAS deadlines do not apply since Northumbria is neither.
Northumbria University Eligibility for Indian Students
Northumbria maps Indian qualifications directly to its UK-degree framework. UG entry looks at Class XII scores plus subject prerequisites, while PG entry converts your Bachelor’s percentage into a UK 2:2 or 2:1 classification. The thresholds below are drawn from Northumbria’s India country page.
- UG general entry: Class XII at 65 percent from CBSE, CISCE, or state boards.
- UG STEM entry: Class XII at 65 percent with Mathematics and any two science subjects.
- PG standard entry (UK 2:2): Bachelor’s at 55 percent, or 52 percent from Delhi, Mumbai, or Pune universities.
- PG selective entry (UK 2:1): Bachelor’s at 60 percent (60 percent applies uniformly, including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune).
- Graduate Certificate pathway: Bachelor’s at 45 percent or higher for ordinary UG degree holders wanting a top-up route.
English proficiency is a separate gate. Accepted tests include IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, LanguageCert Academic, Cambridge Advanced, Trinity ISE, and PSI Skills for English. Minimum scores are:
| Level | IELTS | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UG | 6.0 overall (5.5 each band) | 72 overall | 54 overall | 105 overall |
| PG standard | 6.5 overall (5.5 each band) | 84 overall | 60 overall | 115 overall |
| Healthcare | 7.0 overall (6.5 each) | 100 overall | 72 overall | 135 overall |
Northumbria IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Indian applicants can bypass IELTS if they hold an accepted English-medium qualification. Northumbria waives an English test in these cases:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution in one of Northumbria’s listed English-medium countries.
- Nationals of the 17 recognised English-speaking countries are exempt from proving proficiency.
- Applicants who have completed one year of higher study in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Ireland within the last five years.
A Medium of Instruction letter alone is not accepted from Indian universities. If your degree does not fit the exemption list, book a test slot. Confirm your specific case on the official acceptable English qualifications page.
Northumbria University PG Programs and English Scores
Northumbria’s postgraduate catalog covers business analytics, data science, project management, construction, engineering, and computing. Base tuition anchors at GBP 19,850 (around INR 25.70 Lakhs) for classroom-taught courses and GBP 21,500 (around INR 27.83 Lakhs) for business, computing, and lab-based courses. Two-year Advanced Practice variants sit at GBP 24,500 (around INR 31.72 Lakhs). For the detailed fee breakdown by course, see the programs page. The table below carries popular Indian-applicant picks.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSc Data Science | 1 year | Bachelor’s at 55% (UK 2:2) in computing, mathematics, statistics or a related quantitative discipline | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Business with Business Analytics | 1 year | Bachelor’s at 55% (UK 2:2) in any discipline | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc International Project Management | 1 year | Bachelor’s at 55% (UK 2:2) in any discipline | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Construction Project Management with BIM (Advanced Practice) | 2 years | Bachelor’s at 55% (UK 2:2) in construction, engineering, surveying or architecture | IELTS 6.5 |
Advanced Practice is a two-year variant that adds a masters-by-research or work-based project term after taught modules. The full PG catalog with all master’s, PG diploma, and PG certificate routes sits on Northumbria’s international PG fees page.
Insider note: The South Asia PG scholarship of GBP 3,000 (around INR 3.88 Lakhs) is automatic for eligible Indian PG applicants at admission. It applies to most one-year taught master’s and reduces the first-year tuition invoice directly, without a separate scholarship form.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Northumbria international page for your chosen program before applying.
Northumbria University UG Courses and English Requirements
Undergraduate entry to Northumbria for Indian students is via UCAS. The base UG tuition is GBP 19,850 (around INR 25.70 Lakhs) for classroom courses and GBP 21,500 (around INR 27.83 Lakhs) for business, computing, and lab-based courses. UG programs span BA, BSc, BEng, LLB, and integrated MEng routes. Northumbria’s international UG fees page lists the tier per course.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| MEng Civil Engineering | 4 years (integrated master’s) | Class XII at 65% with Mathematics and Physics | IELTS 6.0 |
| BSc (Hons) programs (Computer Science, Business Management, Psychology, etc.) | 3 to 4 years | Class XII at 65% overall (STEM programs need Mathematics or relevant subjects) | IELTS 6.0 |
| BA (Hons) programs (Fashion Design, English Literature, Media, Marketing, etc.) | 3 years | Class XII at 65% overall | IELTS 6.0 |
The MEng carries a full postgraduate-level fourth year at UG fees, and Indian Class XII holders can enter directly if they meet the Mathematics and Physics prerequisites. Some UG programs award UCAS Tariff points based on Class XII marks. A Foundation Year exists for Indian applicants who fall short of the 65 percent Class XII floor.
Northumbria University MBA Admissions
Newcastle Business School at Northumbria runs a full-time one-year Global MBA and a two-year Executive MBA route. The MBA sits in the business tier, meaning tuition applies at the higher taught-course band. Both routes accept Indian applicants directly, with the direct portal handling the entire application process. Details on both variants live on Northumbria’s MBA program page.
Northumbria MBA programs and tuition
The full-time Global MBA runs for 12 months at Newcastle at GBP 21,500 (around INR 27.83 Lakhs) for the full program. The two-year Executive MBA sits at GBP 24,000 (around INR 31.07 Lakhs) total across both years. Both share a common core of strategy, marketing, operations, finance, and leadership modules, with a capstone consultancy project term. Neither charges an application fee.
Northumbria MBA entry requirements for Indian applicants
The Global MBA needs a Bachelor’s at 60 percent (UK 2:1 equivalent) plus a minimum of three years of professional work experience post-graduation. The Executive MBA lifts the experience floor to five years, with typical intake carrying senior or managerial roles. GMAT and GRE are not required for Indian applicants at either variant. English proficiency needs IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band, unless a waiver applies.
Planning note: Newcastle Business School interviews for the MBA are conducted online for Indian applicants, typically a 30-minute conversation with an admissions academic covering motivation, leadership experience, and career objectives. Shortlisting happens after your written application clears the eligibility gate.
Note: MBA cohort composition, module electives, and intake caps may change year on year. Confirm the current shape on the official Northumbria international page before applying.
Northumbria PhD Admissions and Funding
Northumbria runs PhD admissions across four fee bands, driven by the research area rather than nationality. Indian PhD applicants apply directly to the university with a research proposal, an identified supervisor, and academic references. Full details on the process and fee bands live on the international PGR fees page.
Northumbria PhD entry requirements
A Master’s degree at merit or distinction (UK 2:1 equivalent, around 60 to 65 percent for Indian applicants) is the standard entry gate for a Northumbria PhD. Some faculties accept a first-class Bachelor’s plus significant research output in lieu of a Master’s. All applicants submit a 1,500 to 2,500-word research proposal aligned with an existing faculty research theme, alongside two academic references and IELTS 6.5 overall (higher for specific health disciplines).
Northumbria PhD funding and stipend
Tuition for PhD applicants for the 2026-27 academic year runs across four bands: Band 1 at GBP 18,430 (around INR 23.86 Lakhs), Band 2 at GBP 19,795 (around INR 25.63 Lakhs), Band 3 at GBP 22,525 (around INR 29.16 Lakhs), and Band 4 at GBP 26,620 (around INR 34.46 Lakhs). Fully-funded studentships exist across faculties and cover fees plus a UKRI-aligned stipend, though slots are competitive. Details on the current funded call live on the same PGR fees page.
Note: PhD funding awards, supervisor availability, and studentship calls change per cycle. Confirm current openings on the official Northumbria international page before drafting your proposal.
Northumbria University Application Process
Northumbria splits its application route by level. UG applicants apply via UCAS, which is the UK’s centralised undergraduate application service. PG and PhD applicants apply directly through Northumbria’s own online portal. The steps below assume you have your academic documents, English test result, and personal statement ready before starting.
- Register on the correct platform: For UG entry, register on UCAS (the 2027 cycle opened 1 September 2026) and pay the GBP 34.50 (around INR 4,466) application fee that covers up to five UK universities. For PG or PhD, register directly on the Northumbria applicant portal, which charges no application fee.
- Choose your course: Use the UCAS course code or Northumbria’s course search to lock the specific program. For PG applicants, confirm whether your program has an Advanced Practice (two-year) or standard (one-year) variant.
- Upload your documents: Attach transcripts, degree certificates or predicted results, IELTS scorecard, personal statement, and two references. UG applicants submit the personal statement through UCAS. PG applicants attach a 500 to 800-word statement of purpose.
- Track and respond: Track the decision inside the same portal. Once you receive an offer, accept it, pay the tuition deposit (GBP 5,500 for PG), and request your CAS to trigger the UK Student Visa application.
Insider note: Northumbria’s PG portal supports part-saving of your application, and you can upload extra documents after submission through the same account, which matters when a transcript reissue arrives late from your Indian university.
Applications reach a first decision within 2 to 4 weeks for standard programs and 4 to 6 weeks for MBA and PhD tracks after all documents clear.
Northumbria Documents Required for Indian Applicants
Northumbria’s document set is stable across UG and PG entry, with two exceptions: UG applicants route through UCAS while PG uploads directly. Have every item scanned as a colour PDF before starting the application, since incomplete files delay CAS issuance. This list covers paperwork only, not academic thresholds (those sit in the eligibility section above).
- Passport bio page: Machine-readable, valid for at least 24 months from your intended start date.
- Academic transcripts: Official Class X, Class XII, and Bachelor’s transcripts (semester-wise for PG) with the university seal.
- Degree certificate or provisional letter: The final degree, or a provisional certificate on university letterhead if the original is pending.
- English test scorecard: A valid IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo, LanguageCert, or Cambridge score report, dated within two years.
- Personal statement or SOP: Personal statement via UCAS for UG (up to 4,000 characters). PG statement of purpose of 500 to 800 words.
- Two references: One academic and one either academic or professional, on institutional letterhead with contact details.
- CV or resume: Required for PG applicants, particularly for MBA and Executive MBA (must show years of experience clearly).
- Financial proof: Bank statement or loan sanction letter covering tuition plus living costs for the CAS stage.
- Work experience letters: On company letterhead with role, dates, and reporting line, needed for MBA and executive-track PG programs.
Northumbria University Acceptance Rate
Northumbria does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Independent estimates place it in the 55 to 65 percent band overall, based on Indian-cohort intake ratios and Northumbria’s international-market positioning inside the UK’s post-1992 uni cluster. This is materially higher than QS top-100 UK universities but lower than access-oriented pathway providers.
Is Northumbria University a competitive university for Indian students?
Northumbria sits in the QS 550 ranking band and the THE 401 to 500 band for 2026. Indian applicants meeting the published entry floor (Class XII 65 percent for UG, Bachelor’s 55 percent for standard PG) typically clear the first-stage academic filter without issue. Selection intensifies for MBA, PhD, and Advanced Practice variants where cohort caps are firmer.
Which Northumbria programs are hardest to get into?
The most selective routes at Northumbria are the funded PhD studentships, the Executive MBA (which needs five years of managerial experience), Nursing and other healthcare programs (which need IELTS 7.0 and interview clearance), and the BA Fashion programs at Newcastle campus. For these, meeting the numerical floor is necessary but not sufficient.
UK Student Visa Process for Northumbria University
Indian students study at Northumbria on the UK Student Visa (Route), the sponsor-linked visa that replaced the Tier 4 route. Northumbria is a Home Office licensed student sponsor, and your CAS is what unlocks the visa application. You apply online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal after your CAS reference lands. Full CAS-process detail sits on Northumbria’s official CAS process page.
The application steps for Indian applicants run in this order: register your UKVI account and start the Student Visa application, pay the visa application fee of GBP 524 (around INR 67,837) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS, the NHS access levy) of GBP 776 (around INR 1.00 Lakh) per year of study, attend a biometric appointment at your nearest VFS Global centre in India, and submit your document set including CAS letter, financial proof, and tuberculosis test certificate. Financial proof needs to show tuition balance plus GBP 1,483 per month (around INR 1.92 Lakhs) of living costs for up to nine months for study outside London.
Planning note: Book your VFS biometric appointment the same week your CAS is issued. September intake volumes routinely push VFS wait times to three to five weeks in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru, and a late slot can cost you your onward flight and enrolment slot.
Decision timelines run at three weeks for standard applications from India, or five working days on the priority route (extra GBP 500) and next-day on the super-priority route (extra GBP 1,000). Post-arrival, register with the university’s international student support team within seven days of landing to activate your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) collection.
Tips for Northumbria University Admissions
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Northumbria across recent cycles. They mix insight tips with timeline-anchored steps rather than restating documents already listed above.
- Apply 6 to 8 months ahead: Submit by early April 2027 for September 2027 PG entry, giving room for offer review, deposit, CAS, and UK visa timelines without stress.
- Front-load the SOP work: Draft your SOP against the specific course learning outcomes on the Northumbria course page. Generic SOPs are visible to admissions and slow decision.
- Book IELTS 3 months before submitting: Slots in metro cities fill fast in Feb, May, and Sept. A booked slot means you can submit without waiting on results.
- Request transcripts 8 weeks before deadline: Indian universities often take 4 to 6 weeks to issue formal transcripts. Ask your institution during your final semester itself.
- Use the automatic South Asia PG scholarship: The GBP 3,000 (around INR 3.88 Lakhs) award applies at admission for most PG programs, without a separate form. Verify eligibility on your offer letter.
- Time the deposit for the early-payment discount: Paying tuition in full within the discount window earns a GBP 500 (around INR 64,730) reduction, per Northumbria’s fee funding policy.
- Track offer conditions weekly: Conditional offers usually ask for a specific IELTS band or final transcript. Clear conditions early to avoid CAS delay.
- Recheck peer reviews before accepting: Indian student sentiment on Northumbria reviews from current students flags which programs deliver on placement expectations.
The next live action for Indian applicants targeting Northumbria is the January 2027 PG deadline on 30 November 2026, followed by the UCAS main deadline of 13 January 2027 for September 2027 UG entry. If you are missing IELTS, book it in the next two weeks. If your transcripts are pending, escalate the request today. The rest of the admissions process fits within this six-week window.
