The University of Westminster is a public research university headquartered in central London, England. Founded in 1838 as the Royal Polytechnic Institution, Westminster operates four campuses at Regent Street, Marylebone, Cavendish and Harrow. The university appears in the QS World University Rankings 2027 with a global position of 851-900.

Westminster offers over 350 English-taught undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across business, media, architecture, computer science, law and life sciences. Popular Master’s programmes include the MBA, MSc Data Science and Analytics plus MSc Cyber Security and Forensics. Indian students form one of the largest non-EU cohorts, drawn by the central London location and the two-year UK Graduate Route work visa.

  • QS World Ranking 2027: 851-900
  • Acceptance Rate: around 63% (estimated figure)
  • Intakes for Indian Students: September and January
  • PG Tuition 2026-27: £15,000 to £20,000 (₹19.27 lakh to ₹25.69 lakh per year)
  • International Students: 6,800 from 156 countries (about 36% of total)
  • Average PG Starting Salary: around £27,000 to £32,000 (₹34.68 lakh to ₹41.10 lakh) (market median)

Westminster’s QS band has drifted from 601-650 in 2024 to 711-720 in 2025 and 801-850 in 2026. Times Higher Education 2026 places Westminster in the 801-1000 band. Media and Architecture subject rankings on the Complete University Guide sit above the institutional 115th of 130 UK universities position.

Tuition for international postgraduates rose slightly for 2026-27, with fee waivers up to £3,000 via the International Postgraduate Excellence Award. Indian applicants comparing London-based MBA options at UK universities should factor higher living costs against regional cities. The central campus network shortens the graduate job hunt under the Graduate Route visa.

University of Westminster Admission 2027

Westminster admits Indian students into two intakes each academic year. September is the primary intake for both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants. The smaller January intake accepts postgraduate applications for a limited set of business, computing and design programmes only.

University of Westminster Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants must meet academic thresholds calibrated to UK 2:1 and 2:2 honours-degree equivalents. Applicants also prove English proficiency via an approved test and clear UK student visa financial-proof requirements.

  • PG Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 55-60% (UK 2:2 equivalent) from a recognised Indian university; competitive Master’s programmes require 60%+ (UK 2:1 equivalent)
  • PG English: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 5.5 or 6.0 (varies by programme); TOEFL iBT typically 88 (0-120 legacy scale); PTE Academic 59+
  • PG Credential Verification: WES or ECE evaluation of Indian bachelor’s transcripts; some programmes request academic references and a statement of purpose
  • UG Academic and English: CBSE or ISC Class 12 with 60-70% overall (STEM programmes require mathematics and relevant science subjects); IELTS Academic overall 6.0

Key insight: Indian bachelor’s degree holders often qualify for IELTS waivers when the bachelor’s was taught and assessed in English. Applicants must submit a medium-of-instruction letter from the awarding Indian university. Verify the current requirement at westminster.ac.uk/entry-requirements.

University of Westminster Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of Westminster does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party data from UCAS and student aggregators places Westminster’s overall acceptance at around 63% (estimated figure), with UG offer rates typically higher than PG.

For Indian applicants, competitive PG programmes like MBA, MSc Data Science and M.Arch receive strong applicant volumes. Effective admit rates for these programmes are typically lower than the institutional average.

Westminster’s admissions team assesses applications holistically, weighing academic transcripts, personal statement, references and work experience alongside test scores.

Reality check: The 63% institutional figure obscures programme-level selection. Indian applicants to Westminster’s flagship PG programmes should treat effective admit rates as closer to 40-50% for high-demand courses. Less competitive intakes may run closer to 70%.

University of Westminster Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Westminster operates across four London campuses. Regent Street is the main heritage building near Oxford Circus, and Cavendish sits nearby in Fitzrovia. Marylebone houses Westminster Business School, while the Harrow campus covers media, arts and design.

  • Location and transport: Regent Street sits 5 minutes from Oxford Circus tube station; Harrow campus is 30 minutes on the Metropolitan line; all campuses served by TfL Zone 1-4
  • Housing: Westminster guarantees hall accommodation for first-year international students, with around 2,300 beds across nine halls at £200-£350 per week
  • Facilities: Regent Campus and Marylebone Libraries open extended hours; specialised architecture studios; broadcasting and film studios at Harrow; central London gym network
  • Indian student community: Active Indian Society organises Diwali, Holi and cricket events; central London base attracts around 900 Indian students each year

What Indian students say: Central London campus location is the single biggest draw. Faculty accessibility for one-on-one dissertation help stood out compared to larger UK universities. London job hunting during the Graduate Route visa is easier than in regional cities. See campus and hall details at Westminster accommodation on Collegedunia.

University of Westminster Scholarships 2027

Westminster offers institutional scholarships and fee awards for international students. Indian PG students may also access UK government schemes like Chevening. The flagship direct institutional award is the International Postgraduate Excellence Award.

Key insight: UK Graduate Route visa policy accepts degrees from any UK-recognised university, so Westminster’s ranking band does not affect visa eligibility. Employer recognition for Indian graduates depends more on placement outcomes at Westminster Business School and School of Media than on the QS band.

University of Westminster Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Westminster reports solid graduate employment outcomes for international students. The Career Development Centre provides structured placement support, alumni networks and internships across London’s finance, media and technology employers.

  • Employment rate: Around 91% of Westminster graduates enter work or further study within 15 months (per official Graduate Outcomes data; verify on university site)
  • Median PG starting salary: £27,000-£32,000 (₹34.68-41.10 lakh) in London (market-median figure)
  • Sectors: Finance and banking, media and broadcasting, technology consulting, architecture practices across central London
  • Indian alumni: Westminster’s alumni network in India spans senior roles across banking, media production and architecture practices
  • MBA outcomes: Median post-MBA salary around £40,000-£50,000 (₹51.38-64.23 lakh) (market-median figure)

Insider note: Westminster’s central London placement advantage is real, with physical access to City of London and Canary Wharf recruiters shortening the job-hunt cycle during the Graduate Route visa. Indian graduates should target sector-specific recruitment cycles rather than generic applications.

University of Westminster vs Peer Universities

Westminster’s peer set includes other mid-tier London and South-East UK universities in the QS 800-1000 band. The table below compares key metrics against three peers plus one Russell Group cross-comparison.

Westminster stands out for its central London footprint and applied focus in Business, Media and Architecture. It sits below Russell Group peers on QS rank but above them on affordability and recruiter access for Indian applicants.

The University of Westminster fits Indian applicants who want a mid-tier London degree in Business, Media, Architecture or Computer Science. Total investment of around £32,000-£46,000 per year (₹41.31-59.60 lakh) buys the London location advantage against median PG salaries of £27,000-£32,000. It suits students prioritising Graduate Route access and central London recruiter proximity over top-tier rankings.

Indian graduates gain a two-year post-study work window under the UK Graduate Route, direct proximity to City of London and Canary Wharf employer offices, plus access to Westminster’s applied placement structure. Alumni networks in Indian financial and media hubs provide return-to-India career support. Compare the pathway with other MS options in UK before committing.

Westminster does not fit applicants targeting Russell Group research prestige, funded PhD pipelines or heavy STEM lab facilities. Those students should consider Queen Mary University of London or the University of Sussex instead. Applicants highly sensitive to London living costs may find better value at regional universities like Nottingham or Sheffield.

University of Westminster FAQs

Ques. Can Indian students apply to Westminster without GRE or GMAT?

Ans. Yes. Westminster does not require GRE or GMAT for most Master’s programmes, including MSc Data Science, MSc Cyber Security and MSc Finance courses. The MBA does not mandate GMAT but reviews applications more favourably when strong work experience is present. Indian applicants should verify programme-specific requirements on each course page before starting the application.

Ques. How does the University of Westminster IELTS waiver work for Indian applicants?

Ans. Westminster may waive IELTS when the applicant’s Indian bachelor’s degree was taught and assessed entirely in English. The applicant must submit a medium-of-instruction letter from the awarding Indian university confirming English delivery. Waivers are decided case-by-case, and CBSE or ISC Class 12 English scores can also support the waiver alongside a bachelor’s medium-of-instruction letter.

Ques. Which English-taught bachelor’s degrees does Westminster offer to Indian students?

Ans. All undergraduate honours degrees at Westminster are taught in English. Popular Indian applicant choices include BEng Software Engineering, BA Business Management, BA English Literature and BSc Pharmacology and Physiology. Foundation-year variants remain available for applicants with Class 12 scores below direct-entry thresholds, adding a fourth year to standard three-year honours programmes.

Ques. Does the University of Westminster allow part-time work during the student visa?

Ans. UK student visa rules permit 20 hours of part-time work per week during term-time and full-time work during vacation periods. Westminster provides a Careers and Employability Service that lists part-time roles for enrolled students. Common part-time roles for Indian students include retail, hospitality and campus administrative positions across central London.

Ques. What is the application fee at the University of Westminster for Indian applicants?

Ans. Westminster does not charge a separate institutional application fee for most postgraduate direct applications through its own portal. UCAS charges a small UG application fee for undergraduate applications routed through the UK central admissions platform. Fee waivers are not typically offered by Westminster itself for standard PG applications; verify current amounts on the official pages.

Ques. Which Indian banks recognise Westminster for education loans?

Ans. Major Indian banks including State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Avanse and ICICI Bank offer education loans against Westminster admission offers under their UK study loan schemes. Applicants must present a CAS letter and financial estimate to secure loan sanction. Loan amounts of ₹40 lakh to ₹60 lakh typically cover Westminster’s PG tuition plus London living costs.

Ques. How does the University of Westminster handle interviews or portfolios for Indian applicants?

Ans. Interviews are not required for most Westminster PG programmes. Portfolios are mandatory for creative programmes including MA Fashion Business Management, M.Arch and BA Illustration. Portfolios must show ten to fifteen work samples uploaded through the applicant portal. Some MBA applications may include an optional video interview at the admissions team’s discretion.

Ques. What is the refund policy at Westminster if a visa is refused?

Ans. Westminster typically refunds the deposit and paid tuition when the UK student visa is refused, minus a small administrative charge. Applicants must submit the visa refusal letter within a defined window after the refusal date. Full refund terms sit on the university’s terms and conditions page and should be reviewed before making the tuition deposit.

  • My university has 5 campuses.
  • All campuses are equipped with facilities like libraries, sports centres, gyms coffee shops and student unions and centres.
  • Many campus festivals include the welcome fair and sports days.
  • Many extracurricular activities exist on and off campus; you can take part in student union jobs, work on campus bars, work as student ambassadors, start a society or join an existing one.

Fees

  • The fee is charged on a yearly basis. My full course fees per year were £14,400. It was charged every semester.
  • My accommodation was inside the university, and it was £220-240 per week. Every month my monthly expenses were £200-300, including travelling, food and other expenses.
  • I did not have many transportation expenses, as I lived inside the university, which is why it was easier for me to get to university and other places in central london.

International students at the University of Westminster are offered multiple scholarships. Scholarships are awarded primarily based on development potential, academic excellence, and financial need. The availability, eligibility, benefits, application, etc. differ for one scholarship to another.
