The University of Edinburgh has a highly competitive acceptance rate of 11%. Tips for Indian Students Applying for Master’s courses at the University of Edinburgh

  1. Start Early and Track Deadlines

Applications usually open around Sept or Oct for the next year’s intake. Try to apply by Dec or Jan if the course is competitive. Always check the exact dates on the Degree Finder so you don’t miss anything.

  2. Keep Your Academics Strong

Most courses need around 60 percent or more in your bachelor’s degree. Use your personal statement to show your best projects, internships and any hands-on work. Edinburgh likes students who can apply what they’ve learned.

  3. Sort Out Your English Test

You’ll need IELTS 6.5 overall (not less than 6.0 in any part) or TOEFL 92+. If you got 75 percent or above in CBSE/CISCE Class 12 English, you may not need an English test at all.

  4. Plan Your Budget Properly

Tuition can cost between £28,000 and £41,000. Living in Edinburgh may add another £12,000 to £15,000 per year. Keep your financial documents ready for the visa. Also look at scholarships like the India Merit Scholarship or GREAT Scholarships.

  5. Understand the Visa Process

Apply for the UK Student Visa after you get your CAS letter. Once you finish your degree, you can stay back and work for up to 2 years through the Graduate Route.

  6. Use University Support

Join groups like the Edinburgh Indian Society to meet other students. Attend online events and speak to international advisors if you need help with applications or settling in.

  7. Prepare for Campus Life

Edinburgh is colder than most Indian cities, so pack warm clothes. The International Student Centre can help you adjust, make friends and get support if you feel homesick or stressed

Tips for Indian Students Applying for UG courses at the University of Edinburgh

  1. Get Your Predicted Marks Ready

Ask your school to put your predicted Class 12 marks on an official letterhead and upload them early on UCAS. This helps you stay ahead in the process.

  2. Skip IELTS If You Can

If you scored 75 percent or more in Class 12 English (CBSE or ISC), just select the English waiver on UCAS. It saves you money and extra effort.

  3. Understand UCAS in a Simple Way

With one UCAS form, you can apply to five UK universities for a small fee. Keep Edinburgh as your main choice. Make one solid personal statement and change only a few lines for each course.

  4. Plan Your Money Wisely

You can pay your first-year tuition fee in three parts across the year. For the visa, be ready to show funds for one year’s tuition plus around nine months of living costs.

  5. Don’t Miss Easy Scholarships

Always click “Yes” for scholarship consideration on UCAS. Edinburgh checks your profile automatically and may offer you funding without extra forms.

  6. Apply for Your Visa Faster

Once you receive your offer, try to book your CAS-related steps quickly. Choosing the Priority Visa option can give you a decision much faster.

  7. Travel Light and Buy Things There

Carry only the basic luggage. You can buy winter clothes and kitchen items in Edinburgh easily, and at reasonable prices.

  8. Join Support Groups Before Flying

Join the Indian student WhatsApp or community groups listed on the university portal. They help with airport pickups, settling in and basic support during your first week.

The University of Edinburgh Admissions Decisions

The University of Edinburgh's admissions office typically takes around 30 days to evaluate applications and send a confirmation. If you don't receive a confirmation within this timeframe, it could mean your application was unsuccessful.

If you apply by the October or January deadline, you can expect to receive a decision by May of the following year.

Admission decisions are based on a combination of academic and non-academic qualities. For example, applications to the Edinburgh Business School for MSc programs are weighted as follows:

  • Academic performance: 60%
  • Non-academic qualities: 40%

Candidates with the highest overall scores are often the first to receive a decision. While successful applicants typically excel in both areas, the competition is intense, and even strong candidates may not receive an offer due to the high volume of applications.

Scholarship

  • No, I had not applied for any scholarships. But for the course-specific scholarships one needs to write an essay concerning why they want to pursue the course. More details are available on the following link: https://www.business-school.ed.ac.uk/scholarships/deans-excellence
  • Yes, one of my coursemates has received this scholarship. The scholarships are very limited and are very competitive.
  • Apart from the public scholarships, the University of Edinburgh also offers some course-specific scholarships, one of them being, the Dean's Excellence Scholarship. You can get every detail on the university website.

Scholarship

  • No, I did not receive a scholarship. However, I did receive aid of £1000 spread over two months (£500 + £500).
  • There was one scholarship I had applied to—the Saltire Scholarship—but I did not get it. It was specific to Scottish universities and people from any course could apply for it.
  • Only 2 people from the university got the Saltire scholarship.

Overview

I chose the university for its ranking but when I applied the ranking was 16 in the world now it is 27 in the world according to QS. I now realize that ranking plays a very small part in the facilities provided, as all universities here offer the same facilities. My experience has been average as according to me the university didn’t provide adequate academic support that students needed in terms of subjects that were new and challenging for most of my class. As a class representative, I took a lot of the concerns to them and the university didn’t do anything about the problems we faced as international students.

Overview

I chose this university because of it's location, job market and job security. Additionally the QR ranking, provisions in terms of qualifications of staff and amenities within the university contributed towards the selection of my university. University life has been pretty good in terms of the different things that I have learnt and my new found independence. Additionally, the academics will be this in terms of the material that was provided, skills that I have obtained through my coursework and assignments. All of which honed me with skills that are very much needed in today’s industry. Additionally, Masters abroad has given me the opportunity to interact with different people. All of us belong to different cultures and I have had many meaningful experiences.

Scholarship

I didn’t receive any scholarship but there are numerous provisions for scholarship.

Overview

It is going good. Though due to so much pressure, mental health of alot of students is affected and most people take special circumstances and extensions to meet deadlines or improve their performance. It's a challenge to pass courses atleast in my degree program. Most of the people are struggling to just pass. And alot of have applied for special circumstances. It's definitely extremely hard.

Scholarship

No, I haven't, though there is a need-based scholarship - The Higgs Scholarship
