What Students Say
Likes
- Being one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the UK and a part of the Russell Group, the University of Edinburgh offers a range of services while withholding its traditions.
- The course is well crafted but very intensive, more than most courses. It helps develop your in-depth knowledge on every paper, thus, in the field of IHRM.
- We are also offered services like career development and personal development which help us in shaping our CV and job applications as well as in our well-being
Dislikes
- At times there can be a feeling of burnout because of the intensive course.
- I do not hate anything specific about the University. I am happy with my decision to pursue my MSc here, but there can be a feeling of loneliness at times.
- Unlike most universities in India, the marking system is very strict. A distinction is considered to be 70% here. So, achieving marks in the 80s and 90s is a distant dream for most.
Course Curriculum
- The difficulty level is quite high given the marking system is very strict and one has to do four assignments for midterms and 4 more for final terms in this specific course. It was more theoretical.
- As stressful as it is, it is also a positive aspect of the course that one has to do so many assignments. Thus, it helps one in enhancing one's knowledge in the area.
Admission Experience
-
I applied to the following universities as they offered the same course:
1. University of Edinburgh
2. University of Glasgow
3. Queen Mary University of London
4. University of Exeter
5. Newcastle University
6. University of Aberdeen
7. University of Bristol
8. University of Manchester - I had luckily received confirmed admission from all of the places I had applied to. I also received scholarship offers from the University of Aberdeen, Newcastle University and the University of Glasgow. But UoE was my dream university and I liked its course structure the most, hence my consideration.
- The University of Edinburgh was my dream university. Moreover, I was sure about pursuing an MSc in IHRM. The particular course at this university appealed to me. I found the course modules to be relevant to my career aspirations. All these factors influenced my decision.
- The admission process, as I can recall, was not very complicated. SOP, i.e., the statement of purpose, is the most important part of the application apart from the grades one achieves in their undergraduation.
- Some of the universities, after the completion of the application process, might ask for requirements for your English, i.e., for an IELTS score. So, one can opt for an IELTS exam after it is asked for by some universities.
- There were no such challenges. I had a smooth application process.
- I applied to the September 2024 intake. For that, I started the application process in September 2023 and was done with my applications by October 2023. I received the acceptance offer from the University of Edinburgh in January 2024. I had appeared for IELTS in the first week of December 2023 as that was a requirement from the university.
- I had applied for my accommodation in May 2024.
Class Schedule
- Classes are four days or three days a week...there are four lectures per week, to be precise. Furthermore, the week might get busy with other networking events and activities.
- There are forty-four students in my cohort with around 5 Indian students.
Faculty
- The faculty-to-student ratio in my course is 1:44. It makes the lectures more interactive and discussion-based.
- The lectures are both knowledge and case-study-based. Assignments are a mixture of knowledge and application-based. I think if one is attentive in the class, they will get the skills and understanding of the IHRM field. But to secure a job, a CV, cover letters, and on-the-job training have more importance.
- There is a separate Student Development Team that focuses on career assistance for students and helps their best for students to achieve their career goals. One thing that is essential to know is that there are NO JOB PLACEMENTS and only CAREER ASSISTANCE.
- Every faculty member of my cohort is helpful, approachable, and interactive with all the students and helps us with all our academic and career-oriented queries.
Campus Life
- The University hosts several festivals throughout the year. It kicks off with Welcome
- Week, during which students can meet different societies and groups. Students are also given several freebies, and the societies mentioned above host numerous welcome parties throughout the week, ideal for socialising with other students.
- Throughout the semesters, one also enjoys a range of socialising events as well- both professional and social. These include networking sessions, seminars, potlucks as well as fun gatherings such as Halloween, Bollywood nights, Football screenings, Ceilidhs, Christmas Dinners and more.
- The University of Edinburgh has several campuses spread across the city. Of them, the recently opened Future’s Institute is acclaimed to be the most beautiful campus in the world by some of the websites. Other notable campuses are the Business School,
- Campus of the School of Religious Studies, Old College, King’s Building, Holyrood Campus and others. Each campus offers its unique environment.
- Every campus has its library, café and one of them has its lounge as well. The
- Pleasance and the Potterow are the two locations of the university equipped with student facilities like the gym, club rooms, café, bar, gaming areas and additional student services.
Part Time Jobs
- Students need to apply for those jobs online. Besides, the role of TA can only be applied by PhD students. Every pay scales vary accordingly and everything is listed on the website.
- There are various roles available for students available on-campus. The minimum hourly wage is around 10 pounds per hour. One can work for 20hrs per week at most for a part-time role. Again, the jobs are very competitive.
- Most Indians prefer to work part-time in cafes, restaurants and bars. Some also choose to work for part-time roles in their niche areas, for example, as a Human Resources Assistant, etc.
- There are various job listings on media like LinkedIn and Indeed. Having an ATAS Standard CV and a well-crafted cover letter is essential to get hired.
- The Student Development Team at UoE Business School also helps students craft the same in case they need any guidance.
Placement
- There are no placements. People job hunt. People get jobs at Edinburgh City Council, Start-ups and other organisations as well. Some choose to return to India. The average salary range is of 30k - 40k pounds annually. I have not graduated yet, so cannot provide further information.
- There are several competitive graduate programs available where one needs to start applying from right after the course commencement as getting hired is a prolonged process. It is a competitive job market so one needs to be patient and regular with job applications.
Accommodation
- I was looking for University accommodations, so I looked up on the university website. My monthly rent is around 745 pounds, and it's an en-suite accommodation.
- The challenge one might face is that it is difficult to find affordable accommodation here. If you are looking for accommodation at a lower rent, then you might have to go for a sharing accommodation. Or you can come here and look for flats to share but that is a risky move if you have no connections here.
- My accommodation is around 15 mins walking distance from the university. The city is pretty much walkable so that is of no issue. There are many Indian students in the University accommodation.
Exams
- There are no compulsory exams for UK universities. Some universities might require an IELTS. If you sign up for the exam, you will get preparatory materials for the exam by post or online.
- Documents like two LoRs, SoP ( should be catered specific to the universities you apply to), transcripts are required by some universities, mark sheets from the Class 10 board to your last degree, CV, birth certificate, and passport. These are more or less the important ones.
Fees
- The tuition fees amount to £29,900, which is divided into three instalments, payable each semester. Accommodation costs are £8,932, with payment spread over four instalments, typically due every three months.
- Additionally, living expenses can vary, typically ranging between £200 and £400 per month. This will depend on personal choices, such as how often you dine out or travel. If you wish to reduce your costs, there are ways to manage your spending more efficiently.
Scholarship
- No, I had not applied for any scholarships. But for the course-specific scholarships one needs to write an essay concerning why they want to pursue the course. More details are available on the following link: https://www.business-school.ed.ac.uk/scholarships/deans-excellence
- Yes, one of my coursemates has received this scholarship. The scholarships are very limited and are very competitive.
- Apart from the public scholarships, the University of Edinburgh also offers some course-specific scholarships, one of them being, the Dean's Excellence Scholarship. You can get every detail on the university website.
