Heriot-Watt University admissions draw Indian applicants to a Scottish institution known for engineering, actuarial mathematics, business, computing and design, with entry granted via UCAS or direct online application. Undergraduate entry requires Class XII at 65 to 70 percent depending on programme, while most postgraduate courses ask for a Bachelor’s honours degree at 55 percent or above with an English test score.

  • Next primary-intake deadline is August 14, 2026 for postgraduate direct applications.
  • Base tuition £21,192 to £28,952 (around ₹27.08 to 37.00 Lakhs); no application fee.
  • UG needs Class XII 65 to 70 percent with IELTS 6.0; PG needs Bachelor’s with IELTS 6.5.
  • Acceptance rate estimated at 60 to 65 percent since Heriot-Watt does not publish an official figure.

Popular Indian-applicant choices at Heriot-Watt University include MSc Artificial Intelligence, MSc Actuarial Management, MSc International Business Management and BSc Computer Science. Recent Indian graduates report a supportive careers service and structured industry links at the Edinburgh campus.

Admission Status: Closing Soon. The primary September 2026 intake closes for direct postgraduate applications on August 14, 2026 and for direct undergraduate applications on August 17, 2026. Heriot-Watt charges no application fee for direct submissions through its portal. The January 2027 Spring intake for taught postgraduate courses is also open, with a deadline of December 1, 2026.

Heriot-Watt University Application Deadlines

Heriot-Watt University runs two main taught intakes each year for international students. September is the primary intake where most postgraduate and all undergraduate programmes open. January is a secondary intake, offered for a limited number of taught postgraduate courses. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission strengthens funding and CAS turnaround.

Heriot-Watt University’s primary intake for Indian students is September, when the widest range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes opens. Dates below are drawn from the official Heriot-Watt application-process page.

Planning note: Indian applicants should submit at least three months before the deadline to allow time for offer, deposit, CAS and Student visa. Late July submissions for the September intake often miss visa slots.

Programmes in Actuarial Mathematics, Data Science and Business tend to fill early. Once a course reaches capacity Heriot-Watt may close its intake before the published deadline, so treat the dates above as latest possible, not target.

Heriot-Watt University Eligibility for Indian Students

Heriot-Watt University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Indian applicants can skip IELTS in three cases confirmed on Heriot-Watt’s English language requirements page. Any one route below removes the test requirement, though individual programmes may still request a score.

  • CBSE or CISCE Class XII English at 68 percent or above, within five years of programme start.

  • Successful completion of a Heriot-Watt Pre-Sessional English programme within 19 months of programme start.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Heriot-Watt English requirements page for your chosen programme before applying.

Heriot-Watt University MBA Admissions

Heriot-Watt University offers its MBA through Edinburgh Business School. The school runs two distinct routes: a flexible online MBA popular with mid-career professionals, and an on-campus MBA delivered in Edinburgh. Entry is open to graduates from any discipline who can demonstrate management potential.

Heriot-Watt University MBA Eligibility and Fees

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 55 percent or above.
  • Work experience floor: three years post-degree preferred, though not mandatory for the online route.
  • Performance-based admission: applicants below the standard entry route can qualify by passing three foundation courses.
  • GMAT or GRE: not required for the online MBA. On-campus applicants are advised to submit if their degree is below 2:2.
  • Total tuition (online MBA): around £11,232 (around ₹14.35 Lakhs) for the full programme.

Heriot-Watt University MBA Application Rounds

The MBA runs on a rolling admissions model with no fixed rounds. Applicants can start most courses in January, April, July or October. The Edinburgh Business School MBA page lists course-specific dates for each cohort.

Key insight: The pay-as-you-learn model lets Indian applicants pay per course rather than commit to full tuition upfront. Alumni also qualify for a 20 percent fee reduction on further study.

Applicants should confirm current entry criteria on the official Edinburgh Business School MBA page before applying, as course structure and specialism options are refreshed annually.

Heriot-Watt University PhD Admissions

Heriot-Watt University runs PhD programmes across engineering, computing, mathematics, actuarial science, business, physical sciences and design. Applications are open year-round, with two main start points in October and February. Indian applicants typically apply against advertised projects or submit their own research proposal.

Heriot-Watt University PhD Entry Requirements

  • Recognised Master’s degree at Merit or higher (or a strong Bachelor’s for direct-entry cases).
  • IELTS 6.5 with no component below 6.0 (or an accepted waiver).
  • Research proposal aligned to a supervisor or advertised project.
  • Two academic references and evidence of prior research or publications.

Heriot-Watt University PhD Funding for Indian Applicants

Funding varies by school. Fully funded PhD scholarships from Heriot-Watt normally cover tuition at the international rate plus a stipend of £13,000 to £20,226 (around ₹16.62 to 25.85 Lakhs) per year for the 2026-27 academic year. The EPS PhD Research Scholarship covers full tuition plus a £17,668 (around ₹22.58 Lakhs) annual stipend.

Planning note: Match applications to advertised PhD projects listed on Heriot-Watt’s research pages. Self-funded proposals face longer review cycles and lower conversion to offer.

See Heriot-Watt’s Scholarships page for the complete list of funding options for Indian students, including externally funded routes such as Commonwealth Scholarships.

Applicants should confirm current stipend rates and supervisor availability with the relevant school before submitting a PhD application. Advertised projects carry their own eligibility rules.

Heriot-Watt University Application Process

Heriot-Watt University uses two entry routes. Undergraduate applicants apply through the UK-wide UCAS platform, which lets an applicant hold up to five choices in one submission. Postgraduate applicants and direct-entry undergraduates use the university’s Ellucian portal. The steps below cover the taught postgraduate route most Indian applicants take.

  1. Shortlist your programme on the Heriot-Watt postgraduate programme finder, checking specific entry criteria per course.
  2. Create an account on the Ellucian application portal and save your progress if you cannot complete in one sitting.
  3. Upload supporting documents including transcripts, degree certificate, English test score, CV, personal statement and references.
  4. Submit at no application fee. Heriot-Watt does not charge an application fee for direct postgraduate submissions. UCAS applicants pay only UCAS’s own platform fee.
  5. Track your decision through the applicant portal. Most applicants receive an outcome within three weeks of a complete file.
  6. Accept your offer and pay the tuition deposit, then request your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to begin the visa stage.

Heriot-Watt University Admission Decisions and Deferrals

Offers are issued as either Unconditional or Conditional. Conditional offers commonly require final transcripts, an English test score, or tuition deposit within a set window. Indian applicants can typically defer their offer to the next intake once, subject to school approval, without a fresh application.

Insider note: Complete Indian degree files with attested transcripts and a bank statement upfront. Files that arrive fragmented often stall for two to three extra weeks in review.

Heriot-Watt University Documents Required

All Heriot-Watt University applications share a common documents list, with additional programme-specific evidence for design, architecture and interpreting courses. Prepare digital copies in PDF, each labelled clearly by document type.

  • Academic transcripts covering all completed years of study, translated into English where needed.
  • Degree certificate or provisional letter if the final year is in progress.
  • Class XII marksheet (undergraduate applicants).
  • Passport data page, valid for at least six months beyond programme start.
  • Statement of Purpose explaining programme choice and career alignment.
  • Two academic references on institutional letterhead or from a professional referee for MBA applicants.
  • Updated CV covering education, projects and any work history.
  • English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo) or a valid waiver document.
  • Portfolio for design and creative programmes.
  • Financial evidence at the CAS stage, sufficient for one year of tuition plus living costs.

Programme-specific supplements can include a research proposal for PhD applicants and prior actuarial exam records for the MSc Actuarial Management route.

Heriot-Watt University Acceptance Rate

Heriot-Watt University does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party analysis places the rate at an estimated 60 to 65 percent based on published UCAS conversion data and competitive intake patterns for Indian applicants across its main schools.

Heriot-Watt University Acceptance Rate by Programme

Acceptance likelihood varies by school. Actuarial Mathematics, Computer Science and Data Science sit at the tighter end of the range, while broader schools such as Textiles, Design and Languages tend to be more open.

Heriot-Watt University Selectivity for Indian Students

The university reviews Indian applications holistically. Meeting the published academic minimum is a threshold, not a guarantee. Applicants who bracket the entry floor with a clear personal statement, a strong reference set and a directly relevant undergraduate background convert offers at a higher rate.

Heriot-Watt sits within the QS 300 ranking band, and its Indian applicant pool has grown steadily since 2022, so early submission strengthens outcomes.

Reality check: Indian applicants who target the standard 2:2 or 65 percent Class XII floor convert well at Heriot-Watt. Aggressive stretch picks work best when supported by a genuine research or internship record in the programme area.

UK Student Visa for Heriot-Watt Applicants

Indian applicants who secure a place at Heriot-Watt University need the UK Student Route visa (formerly Tier 4). The university issues a CAS once the applicant accepts an unconditional offer and pays the required tuition deposit. Applicants can submit the visa application up to six months before the programme start date. Priority services in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad typically decide within three weeks.

Financial evidence must cover one year of tuition plus £12,006 in living costs (around ₹15.34 Lakhs) if studying outside London, held in an accepted account for 28 consecutive days. The application also carries the Immigration Health Surcharge, currently £776 per year (around ₹99,180 per year). Tuberculosis testing at an IOM-approved clinic is mandatory before submission.

2026 update: The Home Office increased proof-of-funds requirements in 2026. Verify the current living-cost figure on GOV.UK before locking your bank statement window.

Tips for Heriot-Watt University Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Heriot-Watt University over recent intake cycles.

  • Apply by early March for September to secure early CAS and priority visa slots.
  • Use the Class XII English waiver if you scored 68 percent or above to skip IELTS entirely.
  • Bracket your Bachelor’s percentage against the 2:2 (55 percent) or 2:1 (60 percent) equivalence for your target course.
  • For actuarial programmes, map your undergraduate syllabus to IFoA subjects CM1, CM2 and CS1 in your statement.
  • Confirm CAS deposit early: Heriot-Watt requires the advance instalment before CAS is issued for self-funded applicants.
  • Check school-specific personal statement prompts for design, business and interpreting courses.
  • Watch course capacity: popular MSc programmes close before the printed deadline, so aim four to six weeks earlier.

Heriot-Watt University Admissions Checklist

The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete over the four to six months before submission.

  • Six months out: Book IELTS or confirm eligibility for the CBSE or CISCE Class XII waiver.
  • Five months out: Request attested transcripts and English MOI letters from your university.
  • Four months out: Draft the Statement of Purpose and secure two academic references.
  • Three months out: Submit the direct application on the Ellucian portal.
  • Two months out: Accept the offer and pay the tuition deposit to trigger the CAS.
  • Six weeks out: Book the TB test, prepare 28-day bank statement and apply for the UK Student visa.
  • Two weeks out: Confirm accommodation, pay the Immigration Health Surcharge and book flights only after visa decision.

Heriot-Watt University stays a strong Scotland option for Indian applicants targeting engineering, actuarial, computing and business masters. Its transparent entry ladder, no-application-fee direct route and structured Class XII English waiver make the paperwork lighter than most UK peers.

Overview

So Heriot-Watt, it was actually last minute decision, I must say because I was planning on going to Canada actually. And then I was going to do a food and nutrition course. Okay, but then the plan changed in the end. And then because I was interested in psychology from before, like in 10th grade and then 12. One of my close friends was joining Heriot watt University, and she told me about this university that okay, this sounds like, you know, I'm joining first year and then I had, you know, look like I saw the courses that were available in Heriot-Watt University. And that's when I thought, okay, maybe I should be going forward with psychology, because I've been wanting to do for a while. So that's how I got to go to a friend you can say

I chose Heriot-Watt University because of their faculty and the opportunities it offers. The teachers who teach this program are highly qualified and really helpful too. Also the course coordinators and other staff members were helpful.

I was a late applicant to university and therefore missed out on several scholarships. I got a £1500 scholarship when I applied. After registering for my courses, I was shortchanged by a further £1500.

2+2 program lets me learn and go to a different part of the world and get educated at the same time which was desirable to make me a more global person. In addition to that, Heriot-Watt was a well-known university that had good accreditation like from IMechE.

Yes. Depending on your school grades the university provided your scholarship. If you got a 50% scholarship, it would be 50% of the first year split over the course of your university.
